#226: The dual national dilemma with political scientist José Marichal

Marichal, a Cuban-American professor of political science at California Lutheran University, joins to talk about recognition, mis-recognition, identity, and some of the deeper themes underneath the Mexican-American dual national's choice about which national soccer team to play for. No hard conclusions drawn, just some new (for me, Belz) ways to think about the issue.

Disaster Decision Day for Galaxy. It didn't have to be this way.

Can we talk about a blown call in a game that was more than 1,500 miles away? Can we blame a team that couldn't get it done at home? And can we say goodbye to a member of CoG that has been integral to its success? Well, we're going to talk about all of it. We're going to go over a game the Galaxy shouldn't have lost, and we're going to talk about a coach that got some things wrong on the night. And while doing all of that, we're going to look back on a season that had plenty of opportunities and very little execution. The bottom line is that this Galaxy team wasn't ready to be in the playoffs. And playing against Minnesota at home, they didn't have the experience to get a result. We'll also discuss Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and why Julian Araujo has a lot to learn about the really big games. Finally, we'll talk about Dennis te Kloese's future with the Galaxy and figure out why that situation may come to a head very quickly. The offseason starts right now, and we've got a lot to cover in a relatively short amount of time!

A single point from disaster, Galaxy hope for a rebound against Seattle

- SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: http://cornerofthegalaxy.com/subscribe/ - COG LA GALAXY DISCORD: https://discord.gg/drr9HFZY2P - COG MERCHANDISE (SCARVES, T-SHIRTS, BUTTONS, COASTERS): http://www.cornerofthegalaxy.com/SHOP COG STUDIOS, Calif. -- The LA Galaxy and head coach Greg Vanney need a reality check. And an uninspiring loss to Sporting KC may have taught them their most important lesson before their two biggest games of the season. On today's show, host Josh Guesman wants to walk you through all the Galaxy's mistakes against SKC and tell you why they can't afford to make them again. Plus, there's a lot of league news that you're going to want to know before the Galaxy travel to Seattle for some Monday night football. Josh will start with taking apart the Galaxy's loss to SKC and talk about how the stats will make this game closer than it was. Sure Sporting only got two shots on goal, and sure the Galaxy had the same number on their side, but in actuality, the Galaxy got played off the field in this game, and a lot of it has to do with not finding the vertical seams in SKC defense. Plus, Victor Vazquez, Jonathan dos Santos, and Rayan Raveloson were exploited on Wednesday night when the home team was able to pressure them into turnovers. Why did the defense allow two goals? And why do the Galaxy have a big choice to make on Sebastian Lletget? Josh will also look at Designated Players across the league and try and determine if Goals + Assists mean something in the grand scheme of things. Or does it just matter when it matters? We'll explain! And Julian Araujo has been nominated for a bunch of post-season awards, and he's the only player the Galaxy might see win one or two. Plus, we'll be looking at the standings in the Western conference and why we're convinced that the Galaxy will be playing for everything when they face off against Minnesota! Finally, with the Galaxy traveling to Seattle on Sunday, Josh wants to get you ready for the biggest game of the season. Can LA find a way to catch the Sounders unaware? Or will the Galaxy be left to watch the scoreboard through the rest of the week?

Big games. Immense pressure. Can the Galaxy find points on the road against the best?

If you're an optimist, the draw might give the Galaxy the one point they need to make the playoffs. But both sets of people would agree, the next two games are challenging. And getting results against Sporting KC and the Seattle Sounders would mean the Galaxy earn the post-season spot! On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the Galaxy's pathetic first-half performance against a bottom-dwelling team in the Western Conference, and why Greg Vanney may have gotten it wrong with the players he chose for the starting lineup. And just how important is Julian Araujo to the Galaxy? Newsflash -- very important! Was that a peek at what the Galaxy might be facing once Araujo moves on from Major League Soccer? But Josh and Kevin are keeping their eyes on the Wednesday night matchup with Sporting KC. Kevin thinks the Galaxy are catching KC at the perfect time. And their schedule and the history of games played Children's Mercy Park might lean into that... almost. Josh thinks that getting a point from both KC and Seattle is key to getting into the playoffs. But with the inconsistency of the entire conference, maybe just a win against Minnesota will be enough? Along the way, the guys are talking about an "elite" level performance from Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and why a spurt of goals could make a big ripple for the Galaxy and for the Golden Boot. Josh even has a chart for you to look at or something. Finally, the guys preview the Wednesday night matchup, why the Galaxy will be missing another defender, and why SKC might be down a goalkeeper and their leading scorer. There's a lot to discuss, and we're delighted you could join us!

A lot, actually. And we want to share it with you. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira talk about all the pertinent points the Galaxy accomplished against the Dynamo and why it makes Wednesday's game one of the most important of the year. In actuality, it all comes down to allowing Greg Vanney to start thinking about the FC Dallas game before the Houston game was even over. And that's something the Galaxy have failed to accomplish this entire season. And with six points out of nine so far in the week, the Dallas game takes on an importance that might not have been there if the Galaxy don't win midweek. The guys will talk about the significant contributions from the alternate lineup guys like Sacha Kljestan, Efrain Alvarez, and Kevin Cabral. And they'll also focus on Jonathan Bond's clean sheet and Julian Araujo's continued aggressiveness. Even Sebastian Lletget and Jonathan dos Santos get some kind words lobbed in their direction. But the defensive pairing of Nick DePuy and Derrick Williams also deserves some focus. Josh and Eric will also discuss the latest salary numbers and who has spent the most money at each team segment throughout the league. Plus, they'll talk about the dollar cost per point and why it's okay to be spending a lot if you're getting a lot. Finally, the guys will look ahead to a match with FC Dallas that could have the visitors Pepi-less. What's the key to unlocking the Dallas defense? And why should the Galaxy's game plan be to score first... again? We've got a great show for you today, and we're glad we can get you ready for a Saturday night matchup! We'll see you at the game!

Galaxy look to slow the Timbers in biggest game of the season

But the Saturday night match is a big test for a team that hasn't won a big game this year. Could it be a make-or-break game for a Galaxy side looking for any momentum it can turn into points with just six games remaining? On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira want to get you ready for this weekend's big game while also trying to put into perspective the rest of the season. And all of that will happen while the Dodgers battle the Giants in an NLDS deciding game -- the guys even stall at the end to make sure we can wrap it up. They didn't want to leave any loose threads. The guys will start by talking about the likelihood that Dennis te Kloese will be leaving at the end of the season and why that puts a lot of focus on the remaining front office staff. Can Greg Vanney carry the momentum of the club through to the 2022 season? And why are we even talking about 2022 when the Galaxy still have games to play in 2021? The guys will wrap the international call-ups and tell you why some red flags surround Sebastian Lletget and Jonathan dos Santos country appearances. Plus, Josh and Eric will tell you who will be available for selection on Saturday -- that includes injury updates as well. Then there's some Hall of Fame talk around Robbie Keane and a brief look at Julian Araujo and Efrain Alvarez's inclusion in the "22 Under 22" list that MLS hypes every season. Do Josh and Eric agree with the rankings? Where would they put the Galaxy's two young standouts? Finally, there's an in-depth look at the game this weekend with quotes from Greg Vanney about how the Galaxy can succeed against a red-hot Portland side that is coming into LA with all their confidence. It's a Saturday night game that doesn't get much bigger. Can the Galaxy find a way to break their winless streak? As always, thanks for listening to us! We're glad we could get you ready for the Galaxy's last six games of the regular season.

But two of them might have something to say about the Galaxy's playoff positioning. They'll discuss Julian Araujo declaring for the Mexican National Team, the plethora of Galaxy players out on international duty, and stats about the longest streaks in Galaxy history. Plus, we have LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Bond joining us to discuss the club's current form, what he thinks of the stops and starts of this schedule, and why he thinks the Galaxy are ready to put it all together. Also, roast dinners, mac-n-cheese, and meatloaf! If you listen, you'll understand! Were you expecting more from the LA Galaxy in their 1-1 draw? Were you waiting for things to explode in the second half? And are you still waiting? The Galaxy didn't exactly set the world on fire in the second half of the game against LAFC on Sunday night. And despite everything to play for in the final 45 mins of the match, they came up well short of clinical and seemed to be falling apart. On today's show hosts, Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the Galaxy's lack of a killer instinct and why the 4-4-2 with Dejan Joveljić and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez might not be the answer everyone was hoping it would be. Josh and Kevin start the show by discussing the overly long Landon Donovan statue unveiling, and then Josh will tell you what he thinks of the statue itself. Are you satisfied these statues are capturing the likeness of the Galaxy legends? Is it subjective? While discussing the draw itself, the guys will also dive into some fan behavior issues and why we're quickly falling down a rabbit hole of no visiting fans at these rivalry games. Is there a solution for the fighting, the damage to stadiums, and the pyrotechnics? Finally, Josh and Kevin will tell you why the Galaxy may be below the playoff line before they return from a 14-day international break and why you'll still have some MLS to watch over the weekend! The guys will start with a quick recap of what made the All-Star Game fun and what needed to be improved. And because the Galaxy had two players in the game, they'll also talk about how Julian Araujo and Sebastian Lletget did in the second half of MLS's win over Liga MX. Do the viewership numbers tell the story? And why did a bad field steal some of the thunder from an otherwise very entertaining game? Josh and Eric will also discuss the National Team call-ups the Galaxy might have to endure and tell you why Julian Araujo is still in limbo when it comes to his international future. What's best for the Galaxy and Araujo? And you all know it wouldn't be a podcast if Josh didn't break out some charts and talk to you about the Galaxy's upcoming schedule. How difficult is the closing road for the club? And why should you be optimistic about where the numbers say the Galaxy should finish? On July 31st, Corner of the Galaxy recorded a show in front of a live audience at Taps Brewery in Tustin, CA. The guys get to talk about the Galaxy's win over the Portland Timbers on Friday night and about the roster on the field for that game. But they don't do it alone! Joining Josh, Eric, and Larry, and in front of our outdoor audience are LA Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese and Galaxy Goalkeeping Coach/Legend Kevin Hartman. With te Kloese, the guys discuss the roster moves made for Julian Araujo and Efrain Alvarez and how that could turn into another U-22 signing in Dejan Jovelijć. Dennis will talk about his contract year and whether he wants to stay and continue the building process, as well. After Dennis leaves, Kevin Hartman sits down to discuss the Galaxy's goalkeepers and what he sees as part of the coaching staff that has the current Galaxy squad believing in themselves. Both interviews are a great way to hear from the guys who continue to shape the 2021 team. Then Josh, Eric, and Larry close out the rest of the show with a lot of talk about the 4-1 win over the Timbers and play some fun trivia games! We give out tickets. We give out some scarves. Josh and Christian discuss the changes that saved the game on Wednesday night and why Greg Vanney is starting to get his adjustments spot on. Rayan Raveloson -- yes, we have the pronunciation from him, again -- is tearing up MLS, and he's doing it at a pace better than another big name Galaxy player. Will that last? And what did Julian Araujo bring to the table in the game-tying goal? What makes the youngster so good? But one player is struggling. It's a road trip that will see the Galaxy take on two of the worst teams in Major League Soccer but play three games in eight days -- with two of those games being played at altitude. Hosts Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira are well versed in Galaxy news and all the injury and availability updates you'll need before turning on the TV this Saturday! The guys will start with going over Efrain Alvarez's contract extension and why the Galaxy will use the U-22 rules to their fullest advantage. But what exactly does that mean for Alvarez and Julian Araujo in salary and salary cap? We'll explain. Josh and Eric will also talk about the All-Star Game as well and why you shouldn't vote for Galaxy players, but if you do, these are the guys who are probably already going, so you won't be hurting anything! But then it's on to evaluating how the Galaxy played against Seattle. There's detailed talk about the formation Vanney was playing and why things didn't quite work out the way the club wanted. But there are some positives as well. And if you lump everything together, what are you left with? On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the Derrick Williams red card that has everyone out for a significant punishment and tell you why we're not ready just to believe what the Galaxy are telling us about his health status. Is it a conspiracy? No! But it is a question of why everything looked so weird. Josh and Kevin will start by taking a look at what the Galaxy were trying to do in the game against the Timbers and what didn't work at all. Was Efrain Alvarez the key to unlocking the Portland defense? And did that mean that Portland did an excellent job of bracketing him? Or was he trying to occupy some busy real estate that pulled Chicharito out of position? The guys will discuss Samuel Grandsir's backward and awkward step that saw him leave the game early and without too much impact. Plus, the guys will once again praise Jonathan Bond and Julian Araujo for another solid performance. But the big discussion will be around the Williams red card and what Josh and Kevin think the video actually shows. Is Williams a dirty player? Was the tackle dirty? Or was it a freak coming together of two guys and more of a soccer play than people want to realize? And why does it feel like the Galaxy are fighting the ghosts of Nigel de Jong with this? Kevin will tell you why you can expect Jonathan dos Santos to be playing this weekend when initially we thought he wasn't playing and why Sebastian Lletget has four International games in the next three weeks? What will the Galaxy have to do to get a starting lineup against the Earthquakes? How many starters do they have to replace? We've got a busy show with a lot to talk about. The guys discuss the standout performances from the Galaxy defense and why Jonathan Bond, Derrick Williams, and Julian Araujo all deserved mention on the MLS Team of the Week. And are the Galaxy just catching teams at the right time? Can an argument be made that Seattle is the only good team they've played? Or is something else at play here. Plus, the guys will get you updated on transfer rumors and tell you why a former Chelsea player isn't on the list of people the Galaxy want to bring in. But there is someone. Is the second rumor the Galaxy's mystery man? We've got a packed show ready to get you through a busy week that ends with another home game. What colors will the Galaxy wear this weekend? We'll make some guesses! Thanks for listening and watching. And please don't forget to subscribe, like, and comment on all of our shows!

We'll debut Arquitekto Verbal's "Riot at the Tailgate" off his 1996 album for you on our show! But hosts Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira aren't just your wacky FM DJs. No, they're updating you on all the Galaxy news you missed this week. Josh and Eric will talk about the loss to New England and why Greg Vanney doesn't seem worried. Plus, did any of the younger players impress in their midweek run-out? And why did the second half go so sideways? Plus, the guys want to talk about the ticket event that took place today as Season Ticket Member's waiting in their virtual queues to secure tickets to the Galaxy's home-opener on April 25th. Then there's some discussion of Jonathan dos Santos and Efrain Alvarez and why they'll be joining Sebastian Lletget, Julian Araujo, Vazquez, and Grandsir in Tucson. What's so special about Arizona right now? Finally, the guys tell you why Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez got the biggest payout of any MLS player from the players' union and why the Galaxy hold a special place on TV for Major League Soccer this year (thank Athletic).
