Jimbo’s got James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús and Julien Laurens alongside him for a whole lot of European football chit-chat after an eventful transfer deadline day. We begin over in Italy, where Jamie Vardy’s now having a party in Cremona after his late move to newly-promoted Cremonense. Speaking of strikers - will the arrival of Rasmus Hojlund cement Napoli’s status as favourites for the Serie A title? Next stop - Ligue 1 - where it was goals galore on Saturday, as Lille put seven past Lorient in an extraordinary second half showing and Toulouse v PSG finished 3-6 with a Joao Neves masterclass… where he scored a hat-trick featuring two overhead kicks! Over in the Bundesliga, Erik ten Hag’s short and fraught spell as Bayer Leverkusen manager was brought to a swift end following their collapse against 10 men in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Bremen. So where did it all go so wrong? And where do they turn next? And in La Liga, Barcelona felt the benefit of VAR going awry - but they could only draw with Rayo Vallecano as Real Madrid took advantage as they continued their perfect start to the campaign under Xavi Alonso. All that - plus the curse of being a former Manchester United manager, unsavoury scenes at the Leagues Cup final in Seattle - and the Sound of Music! Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: A deep dive into Salzburg - and some moments of the week! (00.45) • PART 2: Serie A review: Vardy's latest party and are we sleeping on Juve? (09.15) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review: Neves' perfect performance (24.20) • PART 4: Who'd be an ex-Man United boss? Plus chaos in Seattle (36.00) • PART 5: Bundesliga review: ten Hag's Leverkusen nightmare (41.20) • PART 6: La Liga review: Barca blink first as Antony returns a hero (59.50) Hosted on Acast. Was Trent Alexander-Arnold unlucky not to make the recent England squad? Is Hansi Flick still working out his best starting XI for this season? Is Ernesto Valverde proving himself as one of the best managers in Europe right now? As men’s football heads into its first international break of the season, Musa and Ryan chat about Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Arsenal at Anfield, thanks to an unbelievable Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick (04:57). With Alexander Isak and Marc Guéhi set to be announced as new signings too, it was a very super Sunday for Arne Slot and his team. They wrap up the rest of the Premier League, including wins for Brighton over Man City, Bournemouth's win at Spurs plus big wins for Palace and West Ham. It's then onto the Bundesliga, as Erik ten Tag was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just three games in charge (29:56). Ryan was also at St. Pauli's win in the Hamburg derby on Friday (37:13) and Dortmund’s win over Union on Sunday, so there’s a load of chat from the German top flight, before rounding up some other goings on in Ligue 1, Serie A, La Liga and more! Jimbo’s joined by Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús, Seb Stafford-Bloor and James Horncastle for your weekly dose of football chatter from across the continent. We begin in Germany, where Bayern Munich got their title defence underway in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig. Harry Kane picked up where he left off last season, scoring a 13-minute hat-trick to take him to a ludicrous 65 goals in 64 Bundesliga games. Not such good news for Erik ten Hag’s Leverkusen though - beaten 2-1 by Hoffenheim at the BayArena. In Ligue 1, despite the chaos off the field Marseille found some unity on it to beat Paris FC 5-2 at the Vélodrome, while PSG recorded another narrow 1-0 win as their underwhelming performances continued. Olivier Giroud stole the headlines with a 91st minute winner for Lille against Monaco - the 350th goal of his professional career! Over in La Liga, there was late drama as Barcelona fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Levante. Meanwhile Real Madrid made it two wins from two themselves in far more comfortable circumstances at newly promoted Real Oviedo. And there were plenty of intriguing scorelines in the first week of Serie A - including Inter’s 5-0 rout of Torino, Max Allegri’s Milan beaten 2-1 by the promoted Cremonense - and KDB kicking off life at Napoli with a goal in their 2-0 victory at Sassuolo - but he'll have to go some way to take Scott's crown... Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Unsatisfactory sausages & moments of the weekend (00.45) • PART 2: Bundesliga review - Kane just scores goals - and Leverkusen just look bad (11.35) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - Marseille chaos continues as Giroud rolls back the years (24.55) • PART 4: La Liga review - Barca stage yet another comeback as Real start strong (35.05) • PART 5: Serie A review - Inter look angry while McTominay still wears the crown (48.05) Hosted on Acast. How did a change of formation and style of play spark Barcelona’s comeback against Levante? Has Kylian Mbappé been harshly judged in his Real Madrid career so far? Can Villarreal break into the top three this season? Gary, Alex Aljoe and Sid Lowe also discuss the current troubles at Atletico Madrid after they fail to win again. After a difficult few days for Spurs fans, there was much for them to celebrate on the weekend! Following a very quick round-up of the Bundesliga and Serie A—both of which returned this weekend—Musa and Ryan chat all about Spurs’ 2-0 win over Manchester City, recording their second league win in a row at the Eithad (11:42). There’s a quick shout for Arsenal’s 5-0 win against Leeds (22:37), which saw positives for Arsenal, as well as some negatives, losing a couple more key players to injury. Meanwhile, Everton began life in their new stadium with a win (27:42), and there’s a round up of the rest of the Premier League, plus La Liga (37:04), which saw Real Oviedo host Real Madrid in their first home game back in the top flight. Welcome to Transfers that shook the world, a summer series for The Athletic FC looking back on the moves that sparked fury and saw heroes become villains. Today we’re heading back to July 2000 - when Luís Figo did the unthinkable and made the move from Barcelona to Real Madrid… It was a transfer that sent shockwaves through La Liga and went down in footballing folklore - but a quarter of a century later, how is it viewed now? And how pivotal was it in shaping the modern day Real Madrid? Host: Ayo Akinwolere With: Pol Ballús, José Antonio Espina & Andy Mitten Executive Producer: Adey Moorhead Producers: Guy Clarke and Lucy Oliva Sound Design: Jay Beale Hosted on Acast. Recorded earlier on Monday, Jimbo assembles Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús, Seb Stafford-Bloor and James Horncastle as the Euro gang sign off for the summer in style. There’s only one place to start - and the dramatic events on Friday night in Serie A as Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku were on the scoresheet as Napoli tasted Scudetto glory amid jubilant scenes inside the Maradona and on the streets of Naples. Inter will be hoping to put the disappointment of missing out on the title behind them as they prepare to face PSG in Saturday’s Champions League final. The French champions warmed up for the occasion by cruising to a 3-0 victory over Reims in the Coupe de France. So - who’ll come out on top in Munich? The curtain closed on the La Liga season this weekend with emotional goodbyes for Carlo Ancelotti & Luka Modrić as their time at Real Madrid came to an end with a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad. Barcelona wrapped up their domestic treble-winning season with a comfortable victory at Athletic Bilbao - while Real Betis prepare for Wednesday’s Conference League final against Chelsea… And over in Germany, the Pokal fairytale wasn’t to be for Arminia Bielefeld as Stuttgart ended their 18-year wait for a trophy with a 4-2 victory over their third-division opponents. Jimbo’s got the whole gang together as Julien Laurens, James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor and Pol Ballús indulge in some European chit-chat as the season reaches its climax. The Serie A chaos continued with the title set to be decided on Friday night… unless a play-off is required! That’s after Inter were held 2-2 by Lazio while Napoli were goalless at Parma, but it’s Antonio Conte’s side who still sit a point clear at the top of the table. The Eredivisie set a high bar for mayhem as PSV retained their title on the final day - despite trailing Ajax by 9 points with just 5 games to go! Michiel Jongsma’s back to tell us how - and why Ajax’s next boss should probably be bald… Over in Ligue 1, Alexandre Lacazette signed off in style with goals 200 and 201 for his hometown club Lyon - while there was extraordinary late drama in Strasbourg as Abdoulaye Touré’s 99th minute panenka kept Le Havre in the top flight. Barcelona were still on the beers as they were beaten 3-2 by Villarreal, but it didn’t matter after more Lamine Yamal magic had sealed the La Liga title against Espanyol in midweek. Meanwhile, the rebuild’s already started at Real Madrid with Dean Huijsen signed and the announcement of new manager Xavi Alonso seemingly imminent… And in the Bundesliga, Dortmund completed their remarkable turnaround under Niko Kovac to seal a Champions League spot - while champions Bayern Munich finished the season 13 points clear of Leverkusen as Harry Kane made it back-to-back Golden Boots. It’s a clean sweep of four Clasico victories this season for Barcelona over Real after Sunday afternoon’s bonkers 4-3 win at Montjuïc. It moves Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear with three games left to play, while Carlo Ancelotti sets off into the Brazilian sunset… Over in Italy, after their midweek Champions League heroics Inter closed the gap on Napoli at the top of the table to just one point as Antonio Conte’s side conceded an 84th minute equaliser from Genoa to set up a nervy finish with two games left of this enthralling Serie A campaign. We touch base with the equally dramatic title race in the Eredivisie - where Ajax’s nine-point lead at the top of the table has evaporated to just one. Chasers PSV came back from 2-0 down at Feyenoord to win 3-2 in the 99th minute AND Ajax lost 3-0 at home! Michiel Jongsma stops by to tell us more. Jimbo’s got Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús and Italian expert Max Callegari alongside him to recap all the latest action from across the continent. Fresh off the back of last week’s thrilling Champions League quarterfinals - it’s back to domestic matters - but with a nod to the small matter of Arsenal v PSG and Barcelona v Inter just around the corner… Back in Serie A, Napoli moved level on points with Inter at the top of the table after the Nerazzurri were beaten 1-0 by a stunning goal from substitute Riccardo Orsolini. So, could we be heading towards a play-off to decide who takes the Scudetto?! In Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid scored dramatic stoppage-time winners to keep the La Liga title race alive ahead of Saturday’s Copa del Rey final between the two. No such luck for Atleti though, who saw their slim title hopes dashed courtesy of a late defeat at the hands of our favourites Las Palmas. Over in France, it’s all eyes on Arsenal for PSG as they continued their march to an unbeaten league season with a 2-1 win at Le Havre. Marseille put five past Montpellier to take back second place from Monaco - but it’s their plans for the rest of the campaign which have raised a few eyebrows… And in Germany, the Bundesliga title race is all but over as Bayern Munich thrashed Heidenheim 4-0 to move eight points clear after Leverkusen were held at St Pauli. But could Xavi Alonso’s focus be elsewhere with links to the Real Madrid job growing stronger? Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend - well, four French moments of the weekend (00.45) • PART 2: Serie A review - Orsolini stuns Inter as Napoli move level on points (06.30) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - PSG prepare for Arsenal and Marseille head to… Rome?! (18.00) • PART 4: La Liga review - Raphinha and Valverde bag dramatic late winners (32.50) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - Bayern all but champions as Dortmund’s resurgence continues (45.45) Hosted on Acast. Mateo Kovacic is the latest guest in the hot seat on the Official Man City Podcast… The Croatian midfielder joins hosts Sam Cox and FG as he returns for his second appearance on the podcast. Kovacic starts with a look back at his arrival in the summer of 2023 and what it was like joining a City team that had just landed the Treble. And he explains what it is like walking into a dressing room full of superstars having also done so at former clubs Inter, Real Madrid and Chelsea. In an incredible career, the 30-year-old has won the Champions League four times, La Liga and the Premier League as well as playing in a World Cup. But he also explains that he often focuses on the negatives of his game rather than looking back at his phenomenal achievements. And in another fascinating and wide-ranging chat, Mateo also talks about how the dynamic in the changing rooms has evolved over the years, scoring spectacular goals and some of the great players he’s shared the pitch with.
