We’re back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, Champions Cup, and Canadian Premier League chat and interviews. It's not been a very good week in Whitecapsland. Defeats to Seattle in the Champions Cup and San Jose in MLS play has taken a little bit of the wind out of everybody's sails and raised some questions about what the team needs to improve on, what players need to contribute more, and Jesper Sorensen's line-up selections. We pick over the bones of both matches, hear from Quakes coach Bruce Arena, and round-up the weekend's action in the MLS West. Plus we catch up for a chat with two Whitecaps defenders - Mihail Gherasimencov and Basti Schonlau. Our feature interview this episode is with new CPL Commissioner and CEO of Canadian Soccer Media Entertainment James Johnson. We talk with James about his footballing background, what attracted him to Canada, World Cup legacies, the financial viability of the league, television deals, innovations in the league, expansion, footballing pyramids, and the new business deal with Canada Soccer. All of this plus we move onto the letter M in our Canadian Soccer A to Z series. Music-wise, Scottish band Bis continue their residency as our Artists of the Month, Close Lobsters are the latest band to feature in our 40th anniversary tribute year to the C86 movement, and Football Violence Awareness Month continues in Wavelength and in California! Here’s the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.25: Intro chat 04.15: Canadian Soccer A to Z - M 18.00: Whitecaps crash out of Champions Cup to Seattle 39.40: Whitecaps can't find the way to San Jose's goal 68.45: San Jose postgame with Bruce Arena 79.33: MLS West round-up 92.05: Dayne vs Max - The battle to be Canadian number one 100.10: MLS release first details of 2027 sprint season 108.10: Mihail Gherasimencov interview 118.10: Anyone Fancy A Chocolate Digestive? - Mihail Gherasimencov 120.30: Sebastian Schonlau interview 138.40: Interview with CPL Commissioner James Johnson 175.05: Trouble flares at Sacramento US Open Cup game 179.30: Wavelength - Killroy - Fighting In The Stands

Call It What You Want, presented by Zillow, dives into a pivotal moment for the USMNT as the March camp ramps up ahead of a high-profile friendly against Belgium. Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Tony Meola break down the club form of Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun (08:15), and debate whether the USMNT’s attacking core is finally finding its rhythm at the right time. The crew also assess Malik Tillman’s first season at Leverkusen (15:53) and discuss who should be trusted from the penalty spot when it matters most (18:55). Plus, after Tim Ream calls this the “most important camp” yet, the crew reflect on their own experiences fighting for spots with the national team - and push back on the idea that performances in camp alone determine a coach’s decisions. So what really matters to Mauricio Pochettino when evaluating his bubble players (31:57)? Plus, Ricardo Pepi's move to Fulham looks in doubt (48:33) while Orlando City get a big boost with Antoine Griezmann set to join the MLS strugglers (54:35). Matt Doyle and Tab Ramos break down Christian Pulisic and the importance of him returning to top form, including why building the USMNT attack around his skill set could unlock the team’s full potential. They explore how a core attacking group featuring Folarin Balogun, Weston McKennie, and Pulisic can transform the final third, and dive into the ongoing question surrounding Tim Weah, where is he most effective for the U.S.: as an attacker or in a deeper defensive role? The conversation then shifts to the global stage, as Tab and Tom rank their Top 5 dark horse contenders for the FIFA World Cup. Including why they both put the U.S. on the their lists. Plus, Tab offers a detailed look at how the U.S. approached scouting during the 2014 World Cup, revealing the level of preparation required to compete at the highest level. In this episode, Gary Curneen sits down with JP Owens (Ireland U17 Women’s National Team Performance Analyst & Shelbourne First Team) to break down the detail behind elite centre forward play. From movement in relation to teammates, to how the best strikers dictate passes rather than wait for service, this is one of the most in-depth conversations we’ve had on the #9 role. We dive into: Why most forwards struggle to impact games The relationship between the passer and the striker How elite forwards “plot” movements before the ball arrives Practical ways to coach striker movement inside team sessions How to build a culture of player-led development using video and feedback If you coach or work with forwards, this will completely change how you see the position. In 17 days the Premier League will resume with Suj's West Ham hosting Wolves. Victory would take them above James' Tottenham and out of the bottom 3. On the People's Poll, discussion focuses on who is likely to go down with discussion on the remaining fixtures, recent and longer-term stats, home and away form, what can be learned from relegation battles historically, including reference to the mad 2002/03 season. Thoughts on Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham and West Ham all covered, if Burnley or Wolves have any realistic chance of closing the gap, if Crystal Palace could yet get sucked into the battle and why Tottenham remain the most unpredictable team for the run-in. After their damning loss to Forest, Marcus, Jim and Pete are forced to tackle this one straight from the off: would it be a good or bad thing for the Premier League if Spurs go down? Imagine that alternative Super League reality where they’d have the money-soaked pleasure of getting slapped by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich every week. Plus, the changing nature of managerial pressure, our criteria for choosing overseas teams to support and re-recording 'We Didn’t Start the Fire' featuring some Ramble highlights - some of which would definitely make the song libellous and unbroadcastable. Trent Alexander-Arnold was dropped for the Madrid derby after reportedly being late for training, but he came off the bench to assist Vinicius Jr's winner and go some way to again proving his doubters wrong just a few days after he wasn't named in Thomas Tuchel's 35-man England squad. Gary and Alex react to a brilliant game in the Bernabeu as Vini Jr's brace and another goal from Fede Valverde secured a crucial 3-2 victory. Watch out for another golazo from Atletico's Nahuel Molina. Barcelona were below their best in a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, relying on a string of saves from goalkeeper Joan Garcia to hold onto the three points and remain top of La Liga. Joining us this week is Paul Huntington starting out at Newcastle it wasn’t long into his career before he started pocketing Arjen Robben but with limited game time into the first team he looked elsewhere and moved to Leeds. After his time at Leeds he moved to Preston where he signed for the messiah himself Graham Westley and we unearth his hidden past career and how it lead him to do dance off with a player. After 10 years of being a loyal servant to Preston we dig into why he’s never had his testimonial and in the words of Jon “Peter Risdale get it sorted” For someone who doesn’t drink Huntington has his fair share of stories from nights out (Probably better remembered than his intoxicated teammates) including trips to Dublin, being the in the same club as Millwall for a Christmas do & promotion parties. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Riath Al-Samarrai, Mark Ogden and Charlie Wyett to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We kick things off at Wembley Stadium by asking the big question: who needs the Carabao Cup win more — Man City or Arsenal? With Arsenal sitting comfortably in the league, Riath believes this trophy carries greater urgency for Man City. Next, we turn to Brighton’s 2–1 home win over Liverpool — a result that deals a serious blow to Arne Slot’s side’s hopes of Champions League qualification. Mark believes Slot is facing issues he can’t fix right now. Then it’s off to St James’ Park, where we’re joined by Keith Downie to preview the Tyne-Wear Derby. After a tough midweek defeat to Barcelona, how do Newcastle respond? Finally, it’s been a brutal ten days for Chelsea. A 3–0 defeat to Everton follows a humiliating Champions League exit midweek — just how much pressure is Liam Rosenior under? Sunday Supplement is a Sky Sports podcast.
