EXPECTED OWN GOALS: NWSL Week 20 — Are Gotham on the Ascent? Are San Diego on the Decline?

Savannah DeMelo's collapse on Lumen Field on Sunday quickly became the most important story in the NWSL. DeMelo was responsive and alert before she was stretchered off the field, and thankfully, the league tried to learn from their poor handling of the Savy King incident by suspending the match. The guys offer some quick thoughts on DeMelo as a player, and what has made her special throughout her career. After the whiparound, the guys dive into Gotham FC's decisive 2-0 road win over the San Diego Wave. Can Gotham continue this rich vein of form, now that most of the attack is healthy and Jaedyn Shaw is among their ranks? What can the Wave do to stop the bleeding, aside from another swing of luck? Resurgent Man City | Frank's Flying Start | Sunderland Back With A Bang

Dharmesh Sheth is joined by The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, The Times’ Charlotte Duncker and The Guardian’s Jonathan Liew to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin talking transfers, and whilst Eberechi Eze looks likely to be on his way to Tottenham, the Alexander Isak saga continues as Newcastle look for necessary replacements. Next we discuss David De Gea’s possible return to Old Trafford. Whilst Charlotte considers De Gea a better shot-stopper than Onana, but still believes it to be an unlikely move. Elsewhere, we discuss the racist incident against Antoine Semenyo. Miguel talks about the importance of education outside of just football, and Charlotte praises how quickly it was dealt with. We also praise Man City’s resurgent start to the new season; Pep’s rebuild looks impressive after their opening game, but are City back? Then, The Sunday Times' Jonathan Northcroft speaks with us on it being time for Mikel Arteta to win the Premier League. Is it now or never for Arteta at Arsenal? Also, is time running out for rivals Man United? Plus, we discuss Thomas Frank’s flying start to the new season, and a reignited Richarlison spark. Is top five asking for too much for Tottenham this season? Finally, Sunderland are back with a bang! A 3-0 win was a perfect return to the Premier League, but we consider their opponents West Ham’s transfers and whether Graham Potter is suited to the Hammers’ system. And when we say "a little," we mean a BIG ROAD TRIP! On today's show, hosts Josh guesman and Eric Vieira discuss the LA Galaxy's winless streak, things that need to change to see this team climb the standings, and what a game against Sporting KC means for both sides. The guys dive into the prominent role that Marco Reus will need to have in this game, and Sporting and the Galaxy are scraping the bottom of the Western Conference to find a win. If the Galaxy get going, can they suddenly rattle off some wins? Or is the season on life support? Can Greg Vanney survive the road trip without any wins? And what solutions he could find while traveling on the road. We've got a packed show that will prepare you for Sunday's match with SKC and give you some insight into what the Galaxy need to have happen on their big adventure! -- Corner of the Galaxy is kicking off Season 17, just a few shows past show no. 1,100! Wrexham’s Rise and the Pro/Rel What-If for U.S. Soccer (Soccer 4/29)

Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Tony Meola tip their hats to Josh Sargent for earning a spot in the EFL Championship Team of the Season — and dive into what could be next for the Norwich City striker as he eyes a potential move up the ladder. Then, the crew also unpacks Wrexham’s incredible rise through the English football pyramid (yes, we know they're Welsh) and what it means for the pro/rel conversation in American soccer. Could a “Wrexham moment” ever happen in the U.S.? Plus, the USMNT Depth Chart series continues with a hard look at the right back position — where options are looking a little thin. And finally, the Vancouver Whitecaps are the story of the MLS season so far. What's behind their turnaround, and will they get past Inter Miami to book a spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup final? But here the LA Galaxy are after another frustrating loss to Austin on Saturday morning. And there doesn't seem to be much to save them as they flirt with playing shorthanded again this weekend. On today's show, host Josh Guesman discusses his feelings on the game and why the Galaxy did almost enough to win. The only thing missing was the winning part. Can You Play the False Nine Role?

After perhaps the best performance of the season against Newcastle and perhaps the worst performance of the season against Real Madrid, David Mooney is joined by City fan Ciaran Murray and, from BBC Radio Manchester, Mike Minay to assess the week. They discuss the Jekyll-and-Hyde style displays of the season so far (as they continue to search for pop culture metaphors), while they look at the impact of the new signings so far, and what could come between now and May.With Liverpool and Spurs on the cards for this week, they discuss what the state of play is given how both teams have their own little issues at the moment too... and whether City have it in the tank to exploit those or if Pep Guardiola's side are just too unpredictable.Former City midfielder Danny Tiatto speaks to the show about his time at Maine Road - taking in back-to-back promotions, playing under Joe Royle and Kevin Keegan, and red cards aplenty.Plus there's the best City consolation goals and the best 'Typical City' moments.==========To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Barcelona falter again while Atalanta win eight in a row

Pol Ballús, Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford Bloor and James Horncastle are alongside Jimbo for your weekly fix of continental action. La Liga is getting rather interesting all of a sudden, as Barcelona fell to a shock 2-1 defeat by Las Palmas - their first victory away at Barca since 1971! Real Madrid took full advantage and bounced back from their midweek Champions League disappointment at Anfield with a 2-0 win over Getafe. It means they’re just a point behind Hansi Flick’s side with a game in hand. But who’s that in third and just a point further behind… a resurgent Atlético Madrid?! Atalanta are showing they mean business in Serie A this season as they recorded their eighth straight win in all competitions with a 2-0 victory at Roma on Monday night. They’re just a point behind leaders Napoli, who were 1-0 winners at Torino thanks to Scott McTominay’s first half strike. But there were scary scenes in Fiorentina as their match with Inter was suspended and then abandoned when Edoardo Bove collapsed in the 16th minute. Thankfully the news since has been positive after receiving treatment in hospital. It ended 1-1 in Der Klassiker between Dortmund and Bayern on Saturday evening, but there’s concern for Harry Kane who went off early with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Eintracht Frankfurt were big 4-0 winners in Heidenheim on Sunday to close the gap on Bayern at the top of the table to four points. And in Ligue 1, PSG’s poor week continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Nantes - the first time they’ve come from behind to take a point all season. But despite dropping points Luis Enrique’s side are seven points clear at the top of the table - and have Marseille to thank following their 2-1 win over Monaco. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moment of the weekend and latest on Edoardo Bove - (00.45) • PART 2: Bundesliga review - Dortmund and Bayern share the spoils as Leipzig’s horror season continues (13.00) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - Disgruntlement in Paris as PSG held (26.40) • PART 4: La Liga review - Barcelona’s mini slump continues while Real and Atleti close the gap (37.40) • PART 5: Serie A review - Napoli’s slender win keeps them ahead of a charging Atalanta (50.30) Hosted on Acast.
