What a fun weekend of international football we’ve had, and what a fun weekend of Premier League football we’re about to have! We chat about Scotland’s promotion, Ireland’s bound-to-be-entertaining search for a new manager, the retirement of flag-punching legend Tim Cahill and Gianni Infantino’s novel approach to what should probably be private discussions. Back in domestic football we welcome Claudio Ranieri back to England, rub thighs in anticipation of Spurs vs Chelsea and rub chins ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Bournemouth. And if you’re worried that we missed it, we absolutely talk about Patrice Evra sucking a raw chicken. Carolyn Radford is the Chief Executive Officer of Mansfield Town and currently one of only two female CEOs in professional football. She accepted the position at Mansfield Town at the age of just 29, becoming the youngest football executive in the country - a title she still holds. Speaking to Luke on a match day at Field Mill, Carolyn provides a unique insight into the role of a CEO at Football League level and chats on a range of subjects including what it's like to be a woman in the rarefied atmosphere of the professional game and, having steered The Stags back into the Football League, what her plans are for the future of the club. It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for; Wayne Rooney’s international return! The Rooniverse has been a barren, empty place since the great man retired and finally Gareth Southgate is putting a stop to all this ‘looking forward’ nonsense by bringing it back to the good old days. Jesus. As well as all that international relegation becomes a possibility for the first time, with Ireland and Northern Ireland looking to avoid it, Wales find a player down the back of the sofa (in Belgium) and we have some gossip about Pete and a very special lady. Lee, Rob and Mike chat all about November 17, 1993, the last great night of international tournament qualification; an evening that ended careers, made reputations, left a legacy a certain Welsh fullback could do without and caused David Ginola to have his parentage questioned. Welcome to the first ever Football Ramble Nights, brought to you by the smokey tones of one Marcus Speller. In the velvet-voiced chat machine’s lounge club we discuss the Manchester derby, the sadness that’s always present just behind Eddie Howe’s eyes and a welcome return for an FA Cup giant; Timmy Mallet. Propping up the bar, Pete has another business pitch, informs as of some new dads-at-football-matches action and the bizarre business of bageling. Nice. Hello again. We reflect on a famous victory for humility’s Jose Mourinho and a surprising Steve Bruce-starring sequel to the Turin Shroud as Man United beat Juventus, a grim tunnel experience for Liverpool and Raheem Sterling’s rub of the green in the Chaaaaaaaampions League. Back on domestic turf Mortal Kombat’s Neil Warnock is still just happy to be here, words are put in mouths and there’s some good old fashioned nihilism. Whisper it (like Phil Neville would), but things look like they’re changing for the better at Arsenal. We look back on a pulsating draw with Liverpool at the Emirates, Newcastle finally getting a win and Southampton’s utter calamity of a defensive showing against Man City. Blimey. On top of all this there’s a return for Wayne Rooney, as well as a certain fireplace-based anecdote, yet another baffling football statue and a come-and-get-you plea from a team in Australia. Mark Chapman is one of the country's best-loved presenters across both TV, where he fronts Match of the Day 2, and radio, where he is the voice of BBC 5 Live's sports coverage. The man known to millions across the UK and beyond as 'Chappers' talks to Luke about how his career started, his best and worst moments as a broadcaster and why he's happy to be known as 'the grouting in the tiles'. Delivered with Mark's trademark self-deprecation and humour, this month's Ramble Meets... is a fascinating insight into what it takes to be a top level live broadcaster on both radio and television. Mark's book For The Love of the Game is out now in paperback. There have been all kinds of high pitched noises coming out of Monday Night Football this week as Harry Redknapp wades into Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher’s “debate” about exactly how pathetic Spurs may or may not have been in the last 30 years. There’s confusion over Aaron Ramsey’s situation at Arsenal, a business idea for the Dildo Brothers and further revelations about the by-now-legendary Maltese Joe. Fulham prove to be accommodating hosts yet again as they invite Bournemouth in for tea, biscuits and three goals at the Cottage. Arsenal were also good guests as they brought Crystal Palace a couple of penalties at Selhurst Park, with Chris Smalling also proving an excellent host at Everton, despite their overall all loss at a game of Monopoly (football, you see). We’re also lucky enough to meet the great Bryan Klug, witness a truly special Panenka penalty and, of course, welcome a certain balding smoothy back into the game. Throughout his career, Chris has authored many books on a wide range of different subjects and is a close collaborator with a number of top flight football managers, but most recently co-authored Quiet Leadership with Carlo Ancelotti, a hugely interesting, first-hand, insight into Ancelotti's success in the game as a manager at the top level. Whenever England win convincingly we receive a lot of correspondence that gleefully anticipates the reaction of our dear Marcus Speller. If you’re one of the people who sends us such correspondence; you will not be disappointed. We revel in the victory of Southgate’s Soldiers, barely able to contain our joy before heading back to the good old Premier League. There we find Spurs sneaking under the radar as they prepare for a trip to West Ham, Mike Dean limbering up for one of his biggest gigs of the season in the form of Chelsea vs Man United and Wolves and Watford preparing for an intriguing ding dong. England played their so called Ghost Game with Croatia and it was so eerie that everyone forgot to score or even really do anything of note. Spain are up next, who don’t look too bothered having just thrashed Wales. Welcome to your cat’s favourite podcast (all will be revealed inside) in which we bask in the glory of Burnley’s lovely weekend and ponder a future that features Aaron Lennon tearing it up for England. It could happen, shut up. Over at Old Trafford something still doesn’t seem quite right but luckily for Jose Mourinho we have a solution, we dream of a night out with Jamie Vardy, Geoff Shreeves gets some long overdue pelters, and there’s a welcome return for Antonio Cassano. A trio of returns to the Ramble headlines for Daniel Sturridge, Tony Blair and Pete’s former pop-punk outfit One Eyed Willy this week, surprising us as much as anyone else. We look back over some delicious Champions League action, improvise a kind of Neil Warnock fanfic and continue to give Jose Mourinho immense credit. Elsewhere Sven continues to be the gift that keeps on giving, Keggy pops up and there’s more flying food. The last two things are unrelated, but that’s probably temporary. The Premier League is back after the new-look international break and we’re all fascinated to see if it will be enough to wake up sleepy Harry Kane. There’s much to look forward to: Marcus Rashford hopefully getting a run out, Danny Ings back from a blister, MIKE DEAN. On top of all this there is the welcome and hopefully permanent return to international football for George Weah, a retrospective on the work of the band 5ive and, as ever, some Donaldson gripes. Michael Owen crashed on to the scene in May 1997 in a Premier League game for Liverpool against Wimbledon, and marked it with a goal. Obviously. From then on his career was a whirlwind that involved setting international tournaments alight, a move abroad to the biggest club in the world, injuries, and goals. Lots and lots of goals. Marcus caught up with Michael for this latest edition of Ramble Meets... to discuss his career, what it takes to get to the very top, a certain night in St Etienne in the summer of 1998, and how he views his time at Real Madrid. This episode of Ramble Meets... is available to acast+ subscribers from Wednesday 5th September, and all Football Ramble subscribers a week later from the 12th. This interview took place at Pro:Direct LDN19 for the launch of Umbro’s Speciali 98 collection, a boot inspired by that night in St. Etienne. The international break affords Vancouver Whitecaps a bye week, but there's no rest for us as we bring you another packed episode. The break gives us a chance to look ahead at what the Whitecaps squad could and should look like next season, as the team approaches their most important offseason in the MLS era. We also look at the Canadian national team's record-breaking win over the US Virgin Islands and how the program is moving forward under John Herdman, while also hearing from the man himself. The sun is shining for Watford as they simultaneously ruffle Spurs’ feathers and give us all a lesson in parenting. The Premier League says ta ta, Yaya, as Mr Toure heads off to Greece with a beautifully unnecessary parting dig from his agent, while across Manchester the Aretha Franklin tributes are starting to become a cause for concern at Hotel Mourinho. Across a 35-year career in football, Carlos Carvalhal has gone from a no-nonsense centre-half in his native Portugal to managing Swansea in the Premier League, via spells at Sporting, Besiktas and a 2.5 year stint at Sheffield Wednesday in which his side narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League in both his full seasons at the club. As the first working manager to appear in our Ramble Meets... series, Carlos offers his insight in what it takes to be a head coach at the top level in the modern game, how easy it is to spot talent, how to deal with a talented dressing room and much, much more. Hello everyone! Happy Monday! We're back in the saddle and ruminating over the weekend's games, starting with comeback kings Bournemouth and their draw against Everton, followed by a good chinwag about Arsenal's win over a slow-starting West Ham. Also on your all-new Ramble: Wolves roar, Roy Hodgson gets angry and a little big confused over a giant vespidae, Patrick Van Aanholt has a dig, and much, much more. Don't be a square, subscribe today! And to have an email considered for Pete's increasingly fraught correspondence section, it's [email protected]. It's Thursday so it must be time for another preview show from The Football Ramble! What ho! This time around, we're casting our eyes across buoyant Brighton's trip to Anfield - can Chris Hughton's United-slayers cause another upset? After that we anticipate Jack Wilshere's return to Arsenal in his capacity as 50% of West Ham's engine room, followed by Newcastle United hosting Chelsea and loads more. There's also a dramatic Going for Glold and of course a Best Bet to look forward to, so strap yourselves in and get ready to head to Ramble Town. Let's go! Here we go again! The Ramble's back for your aural delectation! To kick us off this week, Manchester United slip up on the south coast much to Brighton's delight, and Chelsea squeak past a profligate Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. Elsewhere in the Premier League Watford pick up a lovely result at Burnley, Spurs ease past Fulham, and Luke is particularly animated about West Ham's defending (or lack of it), something that would have undoubtedly won the award for most pathetic backline display of the weekend, had Steve McClaren not got his greasy mitts all over QPR. There's also time for more WhatsApp goodness, a Fort William FC update and some Big Neville Southall-related activity into the bargain. It's almost the weekend which means it must be time for yet another preview show! And boy oh boy are there some games to sink our teeth into (there always are to be fair, because that's how football works). First up, Fulham head to Wembley to face Spurs and attempt to exorcise their Crystal Palace-related demons, and we ruminate on when those north Londoners are ever going to be in their new home. After that we applaud Mike Ashley's attempt to save the great British high street before taking a look at their appointment in Cardiff, before wondering if anyone is ever going to cut Unai Emery some slack. There's also all your usual favourites, including emails, Going 4 Glold and lots more. To get involved, it's [email protected]. Love you! The Premier League is up and running, and so are Man City and Liverpool - both of whom recorded eye-catching wins against Arsenal and West Ham respectively. Elsewhere there's chat about a hard day at the office for Fulham, and a look at Wolves' point against Everton. As the Marcelo Bielsa era gets up and running, we wax lyrical about the effect the big Argentinian is having at Elland Road, and also find time to lament yet more poor behaviour from a Newcastle fan, this time at the Home of Football. It's the first Preview Show of the season! Huzzah! And what's more, there's plenty of football to sink our teeth into. First up, Manchester United host Leicester City at Old Trafford, which will undoubtedly give Jose Mourinho something to moan about. Elsewhere across the weekend, there's an Arsenal face off against champions Man City in a stern test of Unai Emery's credentials, West Ham take a trip north to Liverpool, and Southampton host Burnley. Obviously, there's plenty of the usual combi boiler chat as the listeners slowly start to get involved, more nonsense from the enigmatic Pete Donaldson, and a welcome return for Going For Glold. After a short break, the team's back together! Still giddy from France's World Cup win, Kris, Rich, Phil and Jez mostly ignore the title 'race' to talk through who could make it to Europe, and which teams could be in trouble. They discuss the transfer market so far, bitch about TV coverage, and answer your questions along the way.

Alexi and Mosse discuss collegiate soccer's role in developing Americans in the State of the Union (2:25). The Premier League's decision to close the transfer window early is looked at in Mosse Makes the Case (17:01). Also, the guys explore the USMNT's "old guard" in Ask Alexi (25:02). Hello again friends, we're back and bloody excited for the new season! And there's plenty to get our teeth into as well - Pep Guardiola's Man City outwit Chelsea in the Community Shield, but we're still a way away from the full Sarrification of those Blues. There's also transfer news a go-go, particularly at Liverpool, and Jose Mourinho seems to be on a one-man mission to undermine everything at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, the Championship is back with a bang, and Pete spends quite a bit of time comparing the show to a big bouncy castle. In a football career spanning 19 years and counting, Matt Taylor has just about seen it all. From breaking into Luton Town's first team as a 17 year old, to achieving promotion to the Premier League twice with Portsmouth and West Ham, he is now a player/coach at Swindon Town. In this exclusive interview with The Football Ramble, Matt talks to Luke about his early experiences as a footballer looking to break through and start his career, what it was like scoring spectacular goals in the Premier League, what advice he gives to young players starting out at Swindon, and how, at the peak of his powers, he came very close to signing for Spurs. ***Please take the time to rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you get your pods.
