On the weekend Review of Gameweek 37 Suj and James discuss all the games from the weekend which included confirmation of Burnley's relegation and Luton Town will almost certainly be joining them; while Manchester City and Arsenal both won to nil to confirm that the title race will go to the final day, but how James' Tottenham do against City tomorrow is likely to be decisive. But do Tottenham even want to win!? Bench Boosters have mainly done well, clean sheets for Arsenal and Everton have helped but there was pain for owners of Bruno Fernandes and Callum Wilson owners after their weekend no-shows. Plus, there's a focus on one week punts for Sunday's finale, and that may include interest in a Crystal Palace team who are in red hot form. They won again at Wolves, who themselves travel to Anfield on final day and Liverpool assets may well be of interest too subject to what we see at Villa Park tonight. And there's plenty more too consider from others too! Jimbo welcomes Daniel Storey, Adrian Clarke and JJ Bull into the pod after the penultimate weekend of this Premier League season. A nervy Arsenal rely on their defensive steel to overcome Arsenal at Old Trafford, guaranteeing the title race will go down to the last day. Now they need a favour from rivals Tottenham who host the seemingly unstoppable Man City on Tuesday. It was the weekend where Burnley, and almost certainly Luton, were relegated straight back to the Championship. Hear why we were so disappointed in the Clarets and the Hatters. Chelsea look like they’ve finally clicked under Pochettino, with European football a real possibility. Plus we show some love for Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace and Messrs Eze, Olise and Wharton. Can The Dutchman stay in the job into next season? Is there also a need to sell one of their star players to comply with PSR? Suj and James discuss all the latest talking points for Sky Fantasy Football and this weekend provides the opportunity for some unlikely differential captaincy options with Erling Haaland and Mo Salah both lower owned than we would normally expect at this stage of the season. There's reasoning given for recent transfers, discussion on the Luton-Everton and Crystal Palace-Manchester United single gamedays which includes thoughts that the best options on those single gamedays may have next to no coverage with Everton defence and Bruno Fernandes likely to be popular. Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe recap a pivotal Gameweek 35 in the Premier League
Suj and James review the 6 games played in midweek as Arsenal and Manchester City went big in their pursuit of the title but Liverpool's attempt to keep pace hits the skids in the Merseyside Derby at Everton. Now focus turns from Free Hit 34 to Wildcard 35 with Suj (probably) and James both on Wildcard. On the Podcast there's a big lean in the discussion to covering FPL assets from the teams who played in midweek which features 5 of the 6 teams who have a Double in GW37 and whether assets from the likes of Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Everton and Liverpool should go alongside them for the run-in. James also gives a detailed view on Tottenham assets who have two upcoming doubles before revealing his intended Wildcard (subject to team news) and there's one player he's desperate to have but isn't likely to fit in. An epic week sees Jimbo joined by the epic trio of Duncan Alexander, Rory Smith and Sasha Goryunov. Jurgen Klopp suffers his first defeat at Goodison Park in his last visit there, a result that surely ends Liverpool’s title hopes. Have the Reds been too emotional? Did they lose it at Old Trafford? Will the fans accept Slot? And has this been a good season for Everton? Arsenal’s title bid is still on track after their biggest win ever over Chelsea. It’s a great night for Havertz and what could be the crucial goal difference. Next up, the North London derby. Elsewhere, we talk the numerous records that Sheffield United could break and the reinvention of Crystal Palace under Oliver Glasner. Plus the first match-up of the 2024 Inter Totally Cup pits Sasha up against last year’s runner up Tom Williams. Produced by Charlie Jones. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Everton 2-0 Liverpool (04.45) • PART 2: Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea - next up the North London derby (23.00) • PART 3: Man Utd 4-2 Sheffield Utd & the rest of the PL midweek (34.00) • PART 4a: Chelsea Women welcome Barca to the Bridge (45.00) • PART 4b: Inter Totally Cup - Goryunov v Williams (48.00) SIGN UP TO THE ATHLETIC TODAY FOR £2 A MONTH FOR 12 MONTHS • theathletic.com/totally Hosted on Acast. Jimbo welcomes Carl Anka, Charlie Eccleshare and Jay Harris into The Athletic studios after a weekend full of incredible talking points. Man United throw away a 3-0 lead against Championship Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final and are a toenail away from losing, before progressing to the final on penalties. We credit Cov and discuss the damage done to Erik ten Hag’s job prospects. Everton beat Nottingham Forest in the relegation six-pointer on Sunday but Forest’s full-time tweet about the VAR being a Luton fan dominates the headlines. Did Forest cross the line or did these issues with officiating need to be highlighted no matter what? While Man City are booking their place in the FA Cup final, Arsenal and Liverpool win to leapfrog them in the Premier League table. Plus we ask can Burnley do the unthinkable and survive, and should West Ham stick with David Moyes? Produced by Charlie Jones. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1a: Man United beat Coventry on penalties (02.45) • PART 1b: Man City 1-0 Chelsea (18.30) • PART 2a: Everton 2-0 Nottingham Forest - VAR’s a Luton fan (28.00) • PART 2b: Luton lose, Burnley win (40.00) • PART 3: Arsenal and Liverpool win to leapfrog City (46.00) • PART 4a: Aston Villa 3-1 Bournemouth (55.00) • PART 4b: Crystal Palace 5-2 West Ham (58.00) SIGN UP TO THE ATHLETIC TODAY FOR £2 A MONTH FOR 12 MONTHS • theathletic.com/totally Hosted on Acast. On the weekend review of DGW34 Suj returns to join James to discuss the 7 games played so far and for those who took the plunge on Crystal Palace attacking assets it was likely a good weekend with all of Eze, Olise and Mateta returning well. Arsenal and Everton defensive assets also returned well but there was large rotation for Liverpool in their victory at Fulham with Trent Alexander-Arnold being the one that got away for James. But at least he did have decent coverage of Palace, unlikely a certain someone... All the games discussed with thoughts already focusing beyond the rest of this double Gameweek and towards the final 4 weeks, which particular for James means thinking beyond just the 6 clubs who double in Gameweek 37. But those 6 will still make up the majority of slots for Wildcarders but are there any good defensive assets to pick from!? Plus, more VAR controversy, especially at Goodison which led to a stinging and unusual response from Forest, thoughts from the FA Cup semi finals including the heartbreaking near miss for Coventry against Manchester United and Suj reveals that he's leaving the country, permanently. On James' live stream this afternoon lots of questions focusing on Double Gameweek assets for GW34 from Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Liverpool and should Free Hitters overlook those with just one fixture? There's discussion on Crystal Palace and Everton assets with Sunday in mind, best Arsenal captaincy choices for Saturday against Wolves and then Chelsea (or should be Cole Palmer!?) on Tuesday, if it's got to be Mo Salah on Sunday and thoughts on moves for next Wednesday, ehich could become particularly awkward if Manchester City's fixture at Brighton moves forward 24 hours from the Thursday. Plus, data learnings, differentials under consideration, what the penultimate matchweek 37 fixture announcement changes in plans and lots more. At Anfield on Sunday, Liverpool’s terrible week got a whole lot worse. A shock 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace has dealt a blow to Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of a second Premier League title and they have a mountain to climb in the Europa League, trailing Atalanta 3-0. So why are Liverpool faltering at the business end of the season? And can they still turn it round? Ayo Akinwolere is joined by The Athletic's Oli Kay and James Pearce to assess and analyse where things have gone wrong for Jurgen Klopp's side having gone from potential quadruple winners to seeing his reign possibly end with a whimper. Clayton joins James for the Gameweek 33 review as there were big swings in the battle to finish first and fourth respectively after Liverpool and Arsenal both lost at home, with The Gunners beaten by Champions League chasing Aston Villa who are now favourites for fourth after Tottenham were dismantled at Newcastle. It was a difficult weekend for many FPL managers but those with Newcastle assets may have done particularly well and Erling Haaland returned well for captainers despite some fortune (or misfortune!) in his returns. All the games reviewed as usual with a focus very much on the forthcoming Double Gameweek that features Liverpool, Arsenal and a Crystal Palace team likely to get plenty of interest. Should managers also be looking at the 4 others team who double? And there's also a focus on the 6 teams who double in 37 and what Wildcarders may want to do in Gameweek 35.
