⚽️ World Cup Betting: Round of 16 Preview | Part 2 (Monday & Tuesday)

The first four Round of 16 matches delivered excitement, if not many surprises. The Soccer Sharps got clobbered on their plays for the Netherlands v USA match, but from then on, it was pretty smooth sailing. Of course, there was the miserable bad beat at the end of the France v Poland match, which blew the bets of many gamblers on Sunday, but the less said about that, the better. Devin and Jordan are back to preview the remaining four Round of 16 matchups, sharing their best bets for each. England see off Senegal to tee up tie with world champions France

Jimbo welcomes Carl Anka, Lynsey Hooper, Julien Laurens and Jack Pitt-Brooke into the pod after a bumper day of last 16 World Cup action. England, inspired by Jude Bellingham, ease past Senegal in convincing fashion. Maybe Gareth Southgate is good at this managing at major tournaments malarkey. That said, the Three Lions face the French in the quarter-finals, after the holders pick off Poland. Olivier Giroud completes his remarkable career story by becoming his nation’s all time top scorer. And Kylian Mbappe looks like the best player on the planet. Monday sees Brazil play South Korea while Japan take on Croatia. Tas Okawa tells us what the best week in Japanese football history has meant to the people back home. Produced by Charlie Jones. Serbia and Switzerland had a rematch of their 2018 game which served up another dramatic 3-2 tie. Ghana and Uruguay meet after the 2010 World Cup and history repeats itself with Uruguay winning the game but not making the knockout rounds with Korea Republic pulling off a dramatic late win over Portugal. Brazil bypass Switzerland, Ghana get away from South Korea and Portugal pass Uruguay

Jimbo, Sasha Goryunov and Duncan Alexander gather to summarise Day 9 of the World Cup. We had two contenders for game of the tournament on the same day! Cameroon took the lead against Serbia but the Serbs scored three in succession to lead 3-1 only for Cameroon to drag it back to 3-3. The result probably means both sides are out but Vincent Aboubakar did score a lovely lob. Ghana looked like they were sailing to victory with a 2-0 lead over South Korea heading into half time. Then two goals in three second half minutes saw South Korea level before Mohammed Kudus scored his second, Ghana’s third, and secure what could be a massive three points in Group H. Massive because Portugal’s win over Uruguay sees the Portuguese qualify and leaves Ghana in pole position to follow them through. Plus we look ahead to the biggest game at the tournament tomorrow… Iran vs USA. Bassil Mikdadi gives us the Iranian perspective on their winner takes all game. And The Athletic’s Sam Stejskal gives us the perspective from the American side. Produced by Charlie Jones & Steve Hankey Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Host Mark Chapman is joined by The Athletic's Merseyside football writer Simon Hughes, editor Dan Barnes and author Jimi Jagne, to discuss the issues facing Everton, in light of revelations about John Bramley-Moore (after whom the site of their new stadium is named) and his involvement in the slave trade... The panel detail Bramley-Moore's connections to the horrors of slavery in Brazil and handle many uncomfortable truths relating to how the City of Liverpool prospered from men like him - as well as, how local authorities are trying to confront these aspects of their past. Should Liverpool have sold Salah? Are Wolves doomed? Can Brazil be stopped?

Jimbo’s joined by Natalie Gedra, Jay Harris and Daniel Storey after a potentially pivotal Premier League weekend. Arsenal stay top with a thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool. What does it say about the state of the Reds under Klopp and should they have taken the money for Salah and rebuilt? It was a good weekend for Natalie’s compatriots Martinelli, Antony, Paqueta and Guimaraes. Can Bruno lead Newcastle into the Champions League? Also Cristiano Ronaldo scores his 700th club goal while Phil Foden continues to fly under the radar. And how big a job might Julen Lopetegui have on his hands if he takes the vacancy at Wolves? World Cup state of play – can anyone beat France but France?

Jimbo, Raphael Hongstein, Julien Laurens and Alvaro Romeo assess the big hitters in Europe with the Nations League qualifiers over and the World Cup on the horizon. England and Germany fight out a 3-3 thriller in a game that exposes both team’s flaws. Are we only just seeing Southgate’s shortcomings when the rest of the continent has been aware for a while? France beat Austria and lose to Denmark, yet with the talent Didier Deschamps has at his disposal, could they become the first nation in 60 years to retain the World Cup? Or will it be Argentina or Brazil who are looking strong by comparison to the likes of Spain, who have a settled midfield and goalkeeper but not much else. And Michiel Jongsma joins us to discuss the only major European nation that are looking strong right now – Louis Van Gaal’s Netherlands. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1a: Getting excited for World Cup (02.00) • PART 1b: Moment of the weekend (05.00) • PART 1c: England 3-3 Germany (09.30) • PART 2: France – boom or bust in Qatar? How An American Became So Attached To Soccer, He Now Calls It Football

This past summer, I was running around Gdańsk, Poland desperately looking for a bar showing the Women’s Euro Cup match between Sweden and Portugal, all while thinking, in the words of the Talking Heads, “Well, how did I get here?” I used to be a traditional American sports fan. I would watch an ungodly amount…
