The Euros continue to plague The Soccer Sharps. They went 1-4 with their Official Plays for the Round of 16. Musa and Ryan chat about Portugal’s win over Slovenia to set up a quarterfinal against fellow 2016 finalists France (02:20). They chat about the dramatic extra time, which saw Jan Oblak save a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, Diogo Costa save Benjamin Sesko’s chance to win it, and, of course, the penalties. France got past Belgium thanks to an 85th-minute own goal from Jan Vertonghen (14:55), and there’s a quick shout for Spain’s impressive win over Georgia. It turns out 94 minutes of bad football isn't nearly as important as 1 minute of good football; this is the lesson England taught us in their thrilling 2-1 win over Slovakia. We break down all angles of Southgate's escape and share our thoughts on Spain's continuing dominance, Jamal Musiala emerging as the face of Germany after nearly being the face of England and Mexico's ongoing trek towards rock bottom. ***OH BY THE WAY... Clayton and James discuss the 4 games played at the weekend in The Euros which included England's dramatic victory against Slovakia where The Three Lions were only seconds away from elimination before Jude Bellingham's incredible equaliser. Did England deserve their victory? What went well, what didn't and will England likely change anything for Saturday's quarter final with Switzerland? There's discussion on the strengths of The Swiss following their excellent victory against a bad Italy and there's also a review of Germany and Spain's victories. Plus, how the Euro Fantasy weekend went and James might be holding off from Wildcarding this week. Alexi Lalas and David Mosse recap the thrilling comebacks in the Euros Round of 16, as well as Mexico and Jamaica’s elimination from Copa América Group B. England escaped an early knockout round exit, with a Jude Bellingham bicycle late in second half stoppage time. Slovakia led 1-0 for most of the match, but after leveling the score Harry Kane’s header claimed the Three Lions victory. Spain also came back from being down 1-0, scoring 4 unanswered goals to advance. Mexico failed to make it out of the group for the third time in their last four Copa América appearances. A win on the night would have clinched their spot in the quarterfinals. (3:03) To wrap the show, Alexi gives his motivational speech to the USMNT as they take on Uruguay tomorrow evening and try to advance out of their group. Jimbo is joined by Tom Williams, Mark Carey, Daniel Storey and Kristof Terreur after another day of drama at Euro 2024. England are through to the quarter-finals after a last-gasp comeback against Slovakia. But it’s yet another unconvincing display from Gareth Southgate’s side. With Switzerland coming next, what can the England manager do to get them firing? Is Phil Foden the one who has to make way? Georgia give Spain a scare but La Roja show their class in a 4-1 win. Up next - Germany. Monday’s last 16 ties will see France take on Belgium in the latest chapter in their rivalry. And Portugal face Slovenia with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo looking to finally get on the scoresheet. Produced by Charlie Jones. Theme music by JJ Bull. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: England 2-1 Slovakia (02.30) • PART 2: Spain 4-1 Georgia (19.00) • PART 3a: France v Belgium preview (28.00) • PART 3b: Portugal v Slovenia preview (40.00) SIGN UP TO THE ATHLETIC TODAY FOR £1 A MONTH FOR 12 MONTHS • theathletic.com/totally Hosted on Acast. Jimbo's joined by Adrian Clarke and Sasha Goryunov to look back on an eventful first evening of round of 16 ties at Euro 2024. We begin in Dortmund, where there was lightning, thunder and torrential rain - but it didn't stop Germany from getting the job done in a 2-0 victory over Denmark which wasn't without VAR drama. Seb Stafford-Bloor checks in from a wet and wild Westfalenstadion. Then to Berlin - where holders Italy crashed out of the tournament following a pretty dismal showing against Switzerland in a 2-0 defeat. Michael Cox and James Horncastle are on hand to bring reaction - and ponder what next for the Azzurri and their manager Luciano Spalletti. Finally, it's all eyes on the next two round of 16 ties coming our way on Sunday - with Spain taking on Georgia after England face Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen. Kristian Flak drops in to bring us a flavour of the mood from Bratislava ahead of the game. Produced by Lucy Oliva. Theme music by JJ Bull. Round 3 of the Euros group stage was an absolute debacle for the podcast. The Soccer Sharps went 1-4 with their Official Plays for the round. However, Devin and Jordan are happy to see the arrival of the knockout rounds. The business end of the tournament tends to be a bit easier to handicap and the brothers are hoping to win back some units with 5 Official Plays for the Round of 16. Matches discussed: - Germany v Denmark (9:59) - Spain v Georgia (18:14) - France v Belgium (24:03) - Romania v Netherlands (29:30) - Austria v Turkiye (35:19) Need a new book with a nice sign-up bonus for The Summer of Soccer? England are Taking The Mikautadze. First they land on the softer side of the draw avoiding France, Germany, Portugal and Spain and then yesterday the Belgians decided they didn't want to be there either and with England left with the potential of The Netherlands or Slovakia in the last 16, Georgia's stunning victory against a heavily rotated Portugal meant another 'so-called' easier tie for The Three Lions. It couldn't hardly have landed better for England to have a real go at reaching another final. But what can they expect from Slovakia, who remember, have already shocked Belgium in this tournament? Clayton and James review yesterday's four games including Belgium disappointing again, The Czechs unfortunate exit, Turkey's chances against well fancied Austria and Georgia's historic qualification. Plus, first thoughts for Euro Fantasy and the Last 16 and a review of how Clayton and James did on Limitless in Matchday 3. Clayton joins James to discuss the latest for Euro Fantasy and last night's conclusion to Group B as Spain's second string team beat Albania and Croatia are nearly out after Italy scored a 98th minute equaliser which means a possible end to Luka Modric's International career. And in the second half of the Podcast there's discussion on England and the intel suggests it will be one change with Connor Gallagher replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold. There's reaction to the news, what Clayton and James would do, a look ahead, knowing that irrespective of the result tonight, England are through to the last 16, but how important is it that they win the Group?
