Good morning from Lisbon where Arsenal won last night. Was it a classic? Far from it, but was it almost exactly the kind of the game I thought it might be. Knock-out ties have a much different dynamic to group stages games, so anyone expecting a repeat of the 5-1 here last season probably had […] The post Sporting 0-1 Arsenal: A much needed moment wins the first leg appeared first on Arseblog ... an Arsenal blog.

Thierry Henry has revealed Arsenal's biggest strength and weakness as the Gunners beat Sporting in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Mikel Arteta discovered that playing your best goalkeeper can be a good idea as his side recovered from cup exits with late win in Lisbon There was a temptation to fixate on the moment when Arsenal won this game with a goal that could change their season. Mikel Arteta had urged his players not to panic, not to sink away with hopes of a quadruple long gone, and Kai Havertz got the memo. Gabriel Martinelli crossed from the left and, as the ball dropped, Havertz caught the Sporting defence napping at last, controlled with a feathery touch, took a breath and rolled a finish past Rui Silva to give Arsenal victory in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. It had been a slog at Estádio José Alvalade. Arsenal attempted 488 passes and it was not until the first of two added minutes that they made one really count. Before then it was a grind. Arsenal were often constipated in open play. Although they controlled the game, at least until allowing it to become ragged during a fraught finale, there were long spells when the best the Premier League leaders offered was set-piece wrestling. Noni Madueke, mostly ineffective as he deputised for Bukayo Saka on the right wing, curled an early corner against the bar. Viktor Gyökeres was recorded as being on the pitch. Leandro Trossard tried to score from 40 yards. Leandro Trossard did not score from 40 yards.

Arsenal have guaranteed the Premier League a fifth Champions League spot for next season by beating Sporting Lisbon. The Gunners snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory in Portugal on Tuesday night. Kai Ha…

The last-eight rubber looked to be heading for a goalless draw before Havertz latched on to Gabriel Martinelli’s ball to deliver a fine finish.

How Mikel Arteta treasured this win. All the tension that had built up in the Arsenal manager after devastating defeats in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup was suddenly released in the moment that Kai Havertz calmly slotted home from fellow substitute Gabriel Martinelli’s cross in the first minute of injury time and he set off on a celebration charge down the touchline, fists pumping. He had been a frustrated presence until then as Arsenal put in another anxious performance against a spirited Sporting side who could have established a precious lead ahead of next week’s second leg in north London if they had taken their chances. But having scored in the last round against his former club Bayer Leverkusen, once again it was Havertz who edged Arsenal closer to the last four for only the fourth time in their history.

Good morning from Lisbon. Arsenal and Mikel Arteta arrived yesterday evening, and the team news is mixed. Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel have all travelled, but Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber have stayed behind in London, not quite ready for this one. With a huge game on Saturday against Bournemouth, you have to imagine […] The post Arteta looks for Arsenal identity ahead of Sporting clash appeared first on Arseblog ... an Arsenal blog.

On the opener of Planet FPL Correspondent Week James is joined by Arsenal fan Adam Pritchard to discuss all things on The Gunners and their FPL assets ahead of a season where there is now more than just hope of them finishing above Manchester City and winning the title and it's not just Arsenal fans who think they can do it. But the start is tough, with trips to Villa, rivals Tottenham and Champions City all inside the first 5 so how much investment should FPL managers put into them? There's discussion on a preference between Gabriel and William Saliba, if Ben White is worth the extra, how Riccardo Calafiori and a returning Jurrien Timber may fit in and if David Raya actually offers a cheaper route into covering their defence that should be considered. Conversation on the attackers includes if Bukayo Saka is expected to start in GW1, if Martin Odegaard is worth the 1.5 saving, Kai Havertz's appeal and threats to his place as the central forward, Gabriel Martinelli's underwhelming 2023/24 and potential new incomings. Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe recap a dramatic Matchweek 8 in the Premier League

Micah Richards and Theo Walcott joined Dave Jones on Super Sunday, and they watched Arsenal secure a late win against treble-winners Manchester City at a euphoric Emirates stadium. Substitute Gabriel Martinelli provided the pivotal moment, albeit via a crucial deflection off Nathan Ake. It sparked familiar jubilant scenes in the stands as the Gunners finally beat their rivals after losing the last twelve Premier League fixtures against the Citizens. Richards felt Arsenal were not at their best but said their performance was more intelligent than previous approaches to this fixture and highlighted the performance of William Saliba, who he described as ‘outstanding’. Theo Walcott singled out Declan Rice’s performance in midfield and believes he has taken the Gunners to another level. Gary Neville joined the studio from the commentary gantry and questioned if Manchester City are struggling with a ‘treble hangover’, as they have now lost the last three domestic fixtures in a row after achieving ‘eutopia’ last season. There is also reaction from both dressing rooms with match-winner Martinelli and fellow Brazilian Gabriel Jesus, who feels the win means more than three points. Bernardo Silva conceded that the result was a setback for City, but said it is still very early in the season. Both managers also gave their post-match views, with Mikel Arteta praising the courage of his players, while Pep Guardiola said that he is not concerned about their recent run of domestic defeats. Kelly Cates presents Super Sunday from Goodison Park alongside Theo Walcott, Karen Carney and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who watched Arsenal’s 1-0 win against Everton to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Leandro Trossard secured the win for the Gunners with a sublime finish from a slick team move and Carney feels Arsenal are showing a maturity in their performances. Hasselbaink said that he fears for Everton as they have only got one point from a possible fifteen and he described their next two fixtures against Luton and Bournemouth as ‘massive’. The trio also look ahead to the North London derby next weekend and try to predict where the game can be won or lost. There is also reaction from player of the match Leandro Trossard as well as Ashley Young, who believes Everton can turn their fortunes around. Both managers also give their views, with Mikel Arteta questioning the decision to disallow Gabriel Martinelli’s goal for offside during the first half, whilst Sean Dyche criticised the officials for some of the decisions that they made and questioned the consistency.
