Episode 223 - The AFTN Soccer Show (New York Nightmare)

The ups and downs of Vancouver Whitecaps' season have been on full display over the past two games. In true Forrest Gump style, you simply do not know what you're going to get from them, apart from perhaps not that much satisfaction in their performance. We look back at the 'Caps capitulation against New York Red Bulls, and hear from both head coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and New York's Jesse Marsch. What was behind the Whitecaps formation and performance? Did anyone stand out? Can we read much into how things played out? We also look ahead to next weekend's match up with San Jose, how the MLS West might play out, and talk World Cup qualifiers and Kendall Waston's big night. And there's still time to chat with Robert Earnshaw about his favourite season and talk take out food with Jordan Harvey.

We look back at both matches, standout players, the Whitecaps tactics and hear from Vancouver head coach Carl Robinson and his Sporting KC counterpart Peter Vermes. We also turn our attention to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with some international Whitecaps, as we talk Costa Rica with Kendall Waston, and New Zealand with Stefan Marinovic and Deklan Wynne. We'll be bringing out a specially edited version of Sunday's show now later in the week (as Episode 222) and add in some post Seattle stuff, so watch you podcast feeds for that.

Episode 197 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Dirty Cheaters United)

So it turns out that cheaters actually DO prosper. At least in MLS under PRO referees they do. Vancouver Whitecaps' 1-0 loss to D.C. United, thanks to a dodgy winning penalty call, is a hard one to take. At least we now know what the D.C. aspect of the team stands for. But it wasn't all just down to that one call. The 'Caps did enough to win the game and their finishing, good goalkeeping, and the woodwork, all conspired to prevent that from happening. We look back at all the big talking points from the match and hear the thoughts of both coach, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and D.C.'s Ben Olsen [15:57]. We also chat with the Man of the Match, D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid and centre back Steve Birnbaum [53:04]. But the 'Caps have to put all of that behind them as they have a big game coming up this week with a Canadian Championship semi-final second leg in Montreal. We look back at the first leg, ponder what to expect from the second, and hear from two WFC2 players that made their competitive Whitecaps first team debuts last week - Dutch centre back Sem de Wit [73:32] and New Zealand defender Deklan Wynne [81:15]. And there's still time to look at the Whitecaps new training pitch and facility and hear the thoughts of Jordan Harvey, David Ousted, and Robbo on it and training on grass as opposed to turf [97:14] and have a quick look ahead to this Saturday's MLS match with Atlanta. The AFTN Soccer Show is brought to you in partnership with BCsoccerweb.com, your one stop site for all your BC, Canadian, and North American soccer news and links. Have a listen!

Episode 196 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Win Peaks)

The boys are back in town. Well men, but Thin Lizzy didn't sing that. And it was a case of men against boys for much of Saturday's match at BC Place as Vancouver Whitecaps came away with a 2-0 victory over the Western Conference leading Sporting Kansas City. We look back at the 'Caps victory - the performance, the unchanged line-up for a fifth straight match, which players stood out, and which ones may need a rest. We bring you audio from both head coaches, Carl Robinson and Peter Vermes and ponder what we can take from the game moving forward. We also talk with goalscoring hero Tim Parker after his first MLS goal, and hear from KC's Roger Espindoza after his horror challenge on Alphonso Davies (he's only 16 man). There's also a look ahead to Tuesday's Canadian Championship clash with Montreal Impact, with some words from Robbo on the big game, plus I Ludicrous feature again in our Wavelength section, and lots more! The AFTN Soccer Show is brought to you in partnership with BCsoccerweb.com, your one stop site for all your BC, Canadian, and North American soccer news and links. Have a listen!

Episode 190 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Portland Was Weird)

Another week, another Cascadian derby, another Fredy Montero goal. Only trouble was this week it ended in a 2-1 defeat. We dissect Vancouver Whitecaps' loss against the Portland Timbers. Was it the cliched game of two halves that it felt? Where did it all go wrong, who stood out, who was targeted, and should the 'Caps have taken something from it? We get the thoughts from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson and striker Fredy Montero after the match, about the game and where they go from here with three more tough away games coming up fast. We also chat with Christian Bolanos, who had a poor first half display but was likely the best player on the pitch for the Whitecaps in the second half. It's an honest take after the game, and there may be a little frustration starting to show. See what you think. With the MLS Transfer Window closing soon, are the 'Caps still likely to add some new faces? We hear from Robbo and ponder where they need to be and will they come? There's also chat about tactics, fitness levels, Kekuta Manneh, a look ahead to next week's Canadian derby at Montreal, and more. Have a listen!

Episode 187 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Fredy For Battle - Vancouver v Seattle postgame show)

Kings of Cascadia. We know who we are. Another Cascadian derby. Another Vancouver Whitecap victory. All hail Fredy Montero! Who'd have thought we'd be saying that two months ago? Montero came up with a brace to give the 'Caps a 2-1 win over the Sounders. To celebrate we brought you a special live postgame show on our Mixlr channel. If you missed it, fret not, because here's the podcast of it it. We look back at the match and hear from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson and two goal hero Fredy Montero. Plus Steve heads to the Seattle locker room to chat with and hear from head coach Brian Schmetzer, goalkeeper Stefan Frei, goalscorer Will Bruin, and Cristian Roldan. Have a listen!
