Episode 265 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Stinko de Mayo)

Remember when Vancouver Whitecaps were being lauded for their excellent road record? That seems so long ago now. Saturday's 1-0 loss in Minnesota was the third straight away defeat for the 'Caps. This one against an already undermanned team that played 40 minutes of the second half with ten men. Definitely a Cinco de Mayo to forget. We look back at the high and lows from the match, talk line-ups and formations, bring you our latest player rankings, and hear from both head coaches, Minnesota's Adrian Heath and Vancouver's Carl Robinson. Where now for the Whitecaps? Did the RSL win last week just paper over the cracks or should we just be content that the team is currently sitting in third spot? We also see how the weekend played out for the MLS western teams, discuss the latest big Canadian Premier League news and other headlines, play another round of Do You Know Who I Am? and Half Man Half Biscuit return for our Wavelength section. Here's the full episode rundown of the main segments from the show:02.14: Minnesota v Vancouver match analysis23.47: Adrian Heath and Carl Robinson audio33.28: Was the RSL win last week just papering over cracks?38.45: Whitecaps player analysis49.01: Do You Know Who I Am?53.07: MLS West Week in Review67.12: Wavelength - Half Man Half Biscuit - Mathematically Safe72.44: BC Soccerweb headlines - featuring Can PL, World Cup, PDL, and other news

Episode 263 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Taps-Aff)

The questions everyone wanted answered after last week's hammering in Kansas City was how would Vancouver Whitecaps' players react and what kind of mood would the fans be in. After a week building up to it, we got some answers at BC Place on Friday night. The Whitecaps got the job done against Real Salt Lake and came away with all three points, but it wasn't a performance for the ages against a pretty poor looking visiting side. Still, three points are three points and it ended the 'Caps three game losing streak. Steve, Zach, and Chris pick over the bones of it all. Is it a turning point or was it just papering over the cracks? We also hear from both head coaches, discuss the dissenting voices amongst the media and fanbase leading up to the match, see how the weekend played out for the MLS western teams, discuss the latest big Canadian Premier League news, and Culture Vulture has a song about Roy of the Rovers in our Wavelength section. Episode 259 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Bad Weekend with guests Jordan Harvey and Russell Teibert)

Sick of teams from LA yet? I know we are. LAFC came to BC Place on Friday night and fairly easily picked apart an uninspiring and disappointing Kamaraless Vancouver Whitecaps. We do some picking ourselves, as we pick over the bones of the 2-0 loss, ponder where it all went wrong, how it can be improved, can we cope without Kei, where's the creativity, and where do some players fit into this team. Plus we sit down for a chat with Russell Teibert and talk with Jordan Harvey about his homecoming. We'll also look at the weekend's action amongst the MLS Western Conference teams and Flyscreen feature in this week's Wavelength section with a song about Panini stickers and Willie Johnston. Episode 257 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Salt Pinchers - RSL analysis)

Death, taxes, the Whitecaps getting screwed by VAR, and being unable to break down a poor team. That's what feels inevitable in life right now. The 'Caps headed to RSL and it wasn't so much a case of the result being taken with a pinch of salt, but the Salty ones pinching a result. We pick over the bones of a poor outing in Utah, have a look at what went wrong in the 2-1 loss, and look at the individual performances of some of the 'Caps players and Robbo. We'll also look at the weekend's action amongst the MLS Western Conference teams, bring you a Flash Five about footballing brothers, talk Fish and Chips with Gordon Forrest, chat Panini stickers, introduce our new Swap Shop segment, and Halftime Oranges feature in this week's Wavelength section. In today’s meaty Monday pod, Robbie and Robbie discuss United’s come-from-behind win at Old Trafford (1:40). But despite United’s win, the guys still ask – should United fans be concerned over the form of Alexis and Pogba? (6:10)? Episode 207 - The AFTN Soccer Show (New York City Is A Graveyard with guest Carl Valentine)

Vancouver Whitecaps shocked the world, well us and a lot of others here, by fighting back to beat a star-studded, and unbeaten in five, New York City FC side at BC Place on Wednesday night. We look back at the highs and lows from the game, some individual performances, hear from coaches Carl Robinson and Patrick Viera, and Fredy Montero talks about Herrera's flop. We also take a quick look at the state of both conferences as we move past the halfway point of the regular season, and chat with NYCFC’s Jack Harrison and Ben Sweat. Vancouver Whitecaps U16s saw off Seattle Sounders in a Cascadian derby USSDA quarter-final match up to claim a place in next week’s Final Four in LA. We chat with assistant coach, and Whitecaps legend, Carl Valentine about the win he oversaw. All this plus, anyone fancy a chocolate digestive? Episode 204 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Brilliant! Tragic! with guest Andrew Jacobson)

What a weekend! Vancouver Whitecaps were in action at MLS, USL, and USSDA levels, and TSS Rovers had a double header with Victoria Highlanders with the Juan de Fuca Plate. A feast of football as the temperature gauge rose, and we have it all covered in this episode of the AFTN Soccer Show. Our player interview this episode is with the 'Caps Mr Versatile, Andrew Jacobson, we hear from coaches Carl Robinson and Adrian Heath after Vancouver's 2-2 draw in Minnesota, and Art Brut are featured in this week's Wavelength. Episode 198 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Feeling Peachy with guest Bernie Ibini)

It's certainly been an interesting eight days in Whitecapsland, covering a gamut of emotions. We kick things off with a look back at the 'Caps win over Atlanta, thanks to a two goal Man of the Match performance from Kendall Waston. We chat about how the match played out, who shone, and is this 4-1-4-1 formation now set in stone due to the success it's been having. We also pay a visit to the Atlanta locker room and hear the postgame thoughts [at 23:27] from Greg Garza, Michael Parkhurst, and Tyrone Mears, the latter of who also chats about his family being caught up in the Manchester bombing. Sadly it's not all been good news for the 'Caps after crashing out of this year's Canadian Championship at the first hurdle. We look back at the loss in Montreal [37:31], wonder how seriously the club took it this year, and what it means in terms of money and playing time in the future. Our player interview this week is with the Whitecaps new Australian winger Bernie Ibini [73:27], and there's still time to look at which Whitecaps may head out on loan, this week's Twitter faux pas by the 'Caps, WFC2, and a lot more, including Vanilla Muffins featuring in this week's Wavelength section [84:43]. Episode 197 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Dirty Cheaters United)

So it turns out that cheaters actually DO prosper. At least in MLS under PRO referees they do. Vancouver Whitecaps' 1-0 loss to D.C. United, thanks to a dodgy winning penalty call, is a hard one to take. At least we now know what the D.C. aspect of the team stands for. But it wasn't all just down to that one call. The 'Caps did enough to win the game and their finishing, good goalkeeping, and the woodwork, all conspired to prevent that from happening. We look back at all the big talking points from the match and hear the thoughts of both coach, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and D.C.'s Ben Olsen [15:57]. We also chat with the Man of the Match, D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid and centre back Steve Birnbaum [53:04]. But the 'Caps have to put all of that behind them as they have a big game coming up this week with a Canadian Championship semi-final second leg in Montreal. We look back at the first leg, ponder what to expect from the second, and hear from two WFC2 players that made their competitive Whitecaps first team debuts last week - Dutch centre back Sem de Wit [73:32] and New Zealand defender Deklan Wynne [81:15]. And there's still time to look at the Whitecaps new training pitch and facility and hear the thoughts of Jordan Harvey, David Ousted, and Robbo on it and training on grass as opposed to turf [97:14] and have a quick look ahead to this Saturday's MLS match with Atlanta. The AFTN Soccer Show is brought to you in partnership with BCsoccerweb.com, your one stop site for all your BC, Canadian, and North American soccer news and links. Have a listen!

Liverpool - Talk On: Manchester City Review, Methadone for Intl Break

Jeff Hallett (jeff_hallett) filling in for Joey, hosting Bryan Painter (@bryan_painter) and Jimmy Torrejon (@jtorrejonr_FP) as we thoroughly examine Liverpool's 1-1 draw vs. City at the Etihad. Can we celebrate the result? Who would you want shooting your pen in their respective heydey: Gerrard or Milner? Can Emre Can sustain for the remaining 9 fixtures? And of course, Georginio Wijnaldum love returns to Talk On, arguably never left. We answer these questions and look at the individual performances, back to front and we provide our Seat Index Ratings. **Stay tuned for the next Talk On: we'll preview N(Everton)** What can you find on this channel? Episode 182 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Give Us A Break - Vancouver v Toronto Postgame Show)

Vancouver Whitecaps are now on a two week break. I'm sure I speak for the vast majority of 'Caps fans when I say it couldn't come soon enough. I think we all need a break from this team right now, which is very worrying considering the season has just started. With no spark, no goals, little midfield creativity, and very little discipline, it's been a tough opening month that's seen the team clock up more red cards than league points. With pressure mounting, we look back at the last loss, a 2-0 home defeat to Toronto FC, and the main talking points from it. We hear from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson and discuss some listeners tweets as the discontent in the fanbase grows. We're also going to hear some postgame thoughts from TFC head coach Greg Vanney and captain Michael Bradley about the match, Shea's sending off, the niggly ending, and more. Plus Steve catches up with former Whitecap Steven Beitashour for an exclusive chat about life in Toronto. And it's a welcome return to Half Man Half Biscuit in the 'Wavelength' section of the show, with a song and lyrics about modern football and how it feels to be watching the Whitecaps from the stands right now. Have a listen.

Episode 181 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Natural Disasters with guests Brek Shea and Carl Robinson)

Four days, two matches, two different competitions, two defeats. That's been Vancouver Whitecaps' week, but the performances and circumstances of the games against San Jose Earthquakes and Tigres in the 'Volcano' were very different natural disasters. The 'Caps battled hard against a much better Tigres side in Mexico on Tuesday night, coming away with just a two goal deficit and are still very much in their CONCACAF Champions League semi-final. We look back at the game, the performances, and the strange feeling of coming away from a game that we expected the team to do much worse in but being disappointed with how things ultimately played out. 'Caps coach Carl Robinson gave us a call just before he headed home from Mexico to chat about the game and what may lie in store in the second leg (00:16:23 mark). There were some good defensive displays in Mexico, especially from Kendall Waston and David Ousted. But where was that in San Jose? Can they produce that every week in MLS? San Jose was a mess. We look at the great start, the turning point of Ousted's sending off, and the subsequent defensive collapse, posing the question what future does Kekuta Manneh have with this team if he can't add a better defensive side to his game and what could the 'Caps get for him if they decided to put him up for a trade? Our player interview this week is with one of the Whitecaps most recent additions, Brek Shea (00:49:48). We sit down with Brek to talk about his career, moving to Vancouver, and life off the pitch. We found it an interesting chat and we're sure you will too. And there's still time to bring you Tim Parker's footballing bucket list (01:16:17). Have a listen.

The beautiful chaos that was City vs. Spurs

What do you do when your midfield doesn't really exist? You put Yaya Toure there by himself to hold down the fort behind a tidal wave of attacking options. It nearly worked for Pep Guardiola's side, but there was plenty to unpack from how both teams handled the opposition's approach. The two Mikes break down the match before turning their attention to "the magic of the cup." That's right, they zero in on the biggest matches and storylines in this weekend's FA Cup, from PSG vs. Monaco to Nice'...
