The Ramble: Late winners from Liverpool and Man City, a big win for Newcastle, and more beige gruel for Man United fans

The weekend’s football looked like it was going to be full of surprises until it wasn’t, as Man City and Liverpool kept up their intriguing ding dong, followed by some mind games from Pep, while plucky Man United tried their best against Bournemouth but continued to struggle at this level. Andy Carroll got onto the pitch though, and in a Newcastle win! So that was nice. Aside from this Jim unfairly slanders Tyrone Mings, we hear about Rafael van der Vaart’s change of career and for some reason Liz Taylor makes her Ramble debut. The Ramble: England stumble, Wales earn a hard fought point, and Scotland stun San Marino

Oof, England’s visit to Prague wasn’t the stroll in the park many anticipated it being. It was more like a stumble into some stinging nettles because you were looking at your phone and had assumed the whole thing would be straightforward. Things were better over in Wales, as Gareth Bale’s brilliance earned the home side a point, while Andorra won their first ever European Championship qualifier and and John “Bangin’ ‘em in” McGinn kept up his goalscoring form. Aside from the football we also find time to discuss… Fantasia, Royal nicknames and Petr Cech: Goaltender. We're currently on tour! The Blizzard: Rangers 2-2 Celtic, 1987

There are some football derbies that transcend the ninety minutes on the pitch and the few annual fixtures, and instead become knitted into the fabric of the societies they inhabit. The Old Firm Derby is one of the definitive derbies in world football and we’re heading to the 1987 tie between Rangers and Celtic for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re joined by Guardian sports writer Scott Murray to discuss a truly incendiary affair - Graeme Souness’ Rangers had suffered a turgid start to the league campaign and hadn’t won the title for nine seasons, while Billy McNeil’s Celtic were flying. The two sides met in front of 44,000 people at Ibrox for one of the craziest matches you’ll ever see. Four goals, red cards, fights and a retrospective police enquiry— this game had it all... Episode 355 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Sweet Sixteen with guests Tosaint Ricketts, Ben Fisk, Michael Silberbauer, and Rob Gale) [NSFW]

Maxime Crepeau celebrated a very unique Sweet Sixteen on Saturday evening in San Jose, claiming the MLS record for the number of saves in a game. Imagine how bad Saturday could have gone for Vancouver Whitecaps if he hadn't. It's a great personal achievement but a bad team one. We look back over the debacle and ponder just where it all went wrong. We lift the mood though with a very enjoyable chat with one of the newest Whitecaps, Tosaint Ricketts, as do a career so far retrospective with the striker, and boy, does he have some tales to tell. Moving away from MLS, we turn our attention to the Canadian Premier League and bring you some interesting chats. First up is former Whitecap Ben Fisk, as we talk about his move to Pacific FC and the league in general. Plus we also chat with Pacific head coach Michael Silberbauer and Valour's Rob Gale about their respective seasons so far, the run-in, and what things need to change in the CPL for year two. Plus there's the week's happenings in MLS, our latest Wavelength and BC Soccerweb headlines. This show has strong language throughout and humour that may offend. We knew it wouldn't last. Vancouver Whitecaps unbeaten run is over! It was only two games, but boy, what a couple of matches! A Cascadia Cup loss to Portland means another trophy deserts the 'Caps this season. We look at the match and what has been a busy week of comings, goings, and rumours in Whitecapsland. We sit down for a chat with 'Caps coach Marc Dos Santos to talk about squad building, mistakes made, recruitment practices, and just how a club like Vancouver can compete with the big spenders of MLS. It's been a week with a lot of news in MLS too. We delve into the weekend's matches, look at Wayne Rooney's imminent departure, how LA Galaxy seem to have manipulated MLS roster rules in their favour yet again, and we hear from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as he slates MLS refs and the playoff system. They've only been and gone and done it. Vancouver Whitecaps won a match! Okay, so it wasn't pretty and it was against a shambles of a team, but a win is a win is a win and right now any small victories they can get should be grabbed with both hands. We look at the main talking points coming out of the victory over FC Cincinnati and the big news in Whitecapsland and throughout MLS this week. From transfers to games to suspensions and failed drug tests, there's been a lot to chat about. Keeping with Canadian club football, we chat with Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon about their league season so far, what's made them the class of the CPL, and the need to keep it going to the championship game. Plus we look at what the future of club football in BC may look like. We also delve into the world of football board games as we chat with Marty Neill, one of the men behind the reboot of the classic board/computer game hybrid Football Fortunes, and we reveal our plans for AFTN's new video channel. All this plus Wavelength, BC Soccerweb headlines, and fun food segments with Max Crepeau, Felipe Martins, and Scott Sutter. This show has strong language throughout and humour that may offend. Episode 350 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Hanging Tough - Vancouver v San Jose, Cavalry FC preview, Zlatan, Chris Wondolowski, Shea Salinas, Scott Strasser)

Are you hanging tough? Vancouver Whitecaps are certainly in it tough and when the going gets touch the AFTN Soccer Show gets better, and longer, and we're back this week with an absolutely jam packed two and a half hour affair! There's no doubting Marc Dos Santos has his work cut out to get this Whitecaps team up to a serious playoff contender and Saturday's latest loss to San Jose showed the gap between themselves and teams they should be beating, especially at home. We pick over the bones of the game, hear from both head coaches, and ponder where the 'Caps go from here. We also look ahead to the Cavalry FC game in the Canadian Championship on Wednesday and hear from MDS on his thoughts after the first leg. AFTN's Calgary correspondent Scott Strasser joins us to chat about the Cavs season and what he expects from them in this second leg. Plus we chat with MLS record goalscorer Chris Wondolowski, the Quakes' former Whitecap Shea Salinas, and hear from Zlatan after the LA derby. There's also lots of MLS chat and Ivor Cutler makes his first appearance in Wavelength. Despite the doom and gloom surrounding the 'Caps we have another fun filled show for you. A Goal is a Goal Unless it's an Own Goal

This week we break down a comical week chock full of mistakes at the back (that continued at the time of recording) and look at the teams whose favours are starting to change ahead of the break, and those who just can't seem to catch a break.

Episode 344 - The AFTN Soccer Show (It's Always The Mantaray - Vancouver v NYRB and Dallas, Callum Montgomery, Alejandro Bedoya, MLS and CPL chat)

Another busy week for Vancouver Whitecaps is in the history books. Lots of travel, lots of goals, and a four point haul from two matches was the end result and we look back at it all in this week's show. We delve into the good, the bad, and the ugly from the draw at New York Red Bulls and the home win against FC Dallas. Some good results but there's still a lot of concerns around the team's passing, creativity, and the amount of shots they're giving up, not to mention the mounting injuries as TFC head to town on Friday. We round-up what's been a busy week around MLS, look at one of the big talking points around the league this season - travel and charter flights - and bring you some thoughts on that from Philadelphia Union's Alejandro Bedoya. We also chat with Dallas' Nanaimo born draft pick Callum Montgomery about the difficulties of integrating young players into the current 'Caps team, talk CPL and USL League 2, continue our 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl celebrations, and Ed Banger is in our Wavelength section. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode:02.53: Vancouver Whitecaps v NYRB and Dallas match analysis and a look as some 'Caps concerns39.28: A quick look ahead to TFC and the upcoming problems caused by the Gold Cup51.14: MLS Week in Review including charters chat with Alejandro Bedoya70.25: 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl celebrations continue75.19: CPL and USL league 2 round-up83.32: Callum Montgomery interview88.42: Wavelength - Ed Banger - Kinell Tommy94.55: BC Soccerweb headlines - news stories from around the world of football

Episode 343 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Masquerade - Vancouver v Atlanta and Kansas City, Wondo Watch is over, MLS, CPL, and USL League 2 chat)

From back to back to back to the earth with a bump. That's the difference a week in MLS makes. Vancouver Whitecaps' busy month continued, with a loss at home to Atlanta United and a hard fought draw in Kansas City. We look back at some of the good, the bad, and the ugly moments from those matches, and look ahead to the midweek trip to face New York Red Bulls before returning home to face Dallas. We round-up what's been an even busier week around MLS and bring you some audio from the new all-time leading scorer in the league, a very happy and humble Chris Wondolowski. We also chat with Marc Dos Santos about the difficulties of integrating young players into the current 'Caps team, talk CPL and USL League 2, continue our 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl celebrations, and I, Ludicrous are back in our Wavelength section. Episode 338 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Away With The Ferries featuring David Clanachan, Michael Silberbauer, and Stephen Hart)

What a weekend. What a week. It's had us away with the ferries, and that's where this rather different, and shorter than usual, episode of the AFTN Soccer Show has been recorded as we take to the high seas to travel to Victoria. The Canadian Premier League kicked off its inaugural season this weekend and we headed over to Pacific FC's first ever match, a 1-0 win over HFX Wanderers. We hear from both head coaches and catch up with CPL commissioner David Clanachan to chat about the opening weekend, the growth of the league so far, Pacific's opening game, the One Soccer deal, and a lot more. Turning our attention to MLS, we also break down another disappointing home draw for Vancouver Whitecaps against Philadelphia Union on Saturday afternoon. Petey Blinders: A classic FA Cup semi, Liverpool back on top, Arsenal slump on the road

What a belter from Watford and Wolves at Wembley! A world class finish from Gerard Deulofeu, a luchador inspired goal from Raul Jimenez, and an emotional post match interview from big-hearted Troy Deeney. Man City and Brighton also played. Not to be outdone, the Premier League keeps it tight, and we also give our thoughts on Rube Goldberg machines, wiggly gigglys, and a certain Obvious German. A pie of worms: Draws galore, offsides bore, and a tight top four

Another excellent weekend of football involving surprisingly thrilling draws, confusion about the offside rule and late goals, which for the record still count. That makes it sound a bit pedestrian but honestly it was brilliant. Mous D: Carabao Cup action, a test for Man United and a big moment for Fulham

Man City gubbing Burton Albion; respectful or not? We debate this hot topic because we’re not afraid of tackling the big issues. While we’re at it we give Mousa Dembele a speculative MOT and discuss another one of your frankly mad suggestions to change the FA Cup. As well as this we worry about the atmosphere at Fulham fans’ relaxation days, reflect on the nature of Andy Carroll and rub our chins at the possible combination of Arsenal, Samir Nasri and The Narrative. Episode 300 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Same Again - Vancouver v Dallas, Rahul Kholi, Jay Nolly) [NSFW]

What a weekend this could have been. Once again Vancouver Whitecaps had other results go in their favour and once again they failed to get the job done themselves. "Same again" said Carl Robinson, "not again" said the supporters. So our 300th episode isn't quite the celebratory start we'd hoped for as we pick over the bones of the 'Caps defeat to FC Dallas, but the fun soon starts to pick up after that! We have two interviews to bring you this week. First off all it's a blast from the past as we chat with Whitecaps legend Jay Nolly about his time with the 'Caps and his new career as a commentator for RSL. Next up is Rahul Kohli from iZombie to talk football, the last season of one of our favourite shows on TV right now, Funhaus, and racial stereotypes in the acting world. It's a great chat and we only wish we had double the time with him to get all our zombie questions out there! All this, plus we look at the weekend's action the MLS West, find out if Scott Arfield fancies a chocolate digestive, talk take out food with Jake Nerwinski and fish and chips with Kei Kamara, and there's a double dose of Wavelength to celebrate our milestone show featuring our favourites Half Man Half Biscuit and Frank Sidebottom. Adult diapers: Man United slip up at Brighton, Chelsea and Arsenal duke out a thriller, and Steve McClaren is up to his old tricks

Here we go again! The Ramble's back for your aural delectation! To kick us off this week, Manchester United slip up on the south coast much to Brighton's delight, and Chelsea squeak past a profligate Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. Elsewhere in the Premier League Watford pick up a lovely result at Burnley, Spurs ease past Fulham, and Luke is particularly animated about West Ham's defending (or lack of it), something that would have undoubtedly won the award for most pathetic backline display of the weekend, had Steve McClaren not got his greasy mitts all over QPR. There's also time for more WhatsApp goodness, a Fort William FC update and some Big Neville Southall-related activity into the bargain. Episode 291 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Streaky Breakin' - Timbers v Whitecaps analysis, TFC preview, Stefan Marinovic)

Big games require big performances with big moments. If Vancouver Whitecaps' showing in Portland this weekend is an indication, then the team look to have the stomach for the battle ahead. There's a lot to talk about and we have five of AFTN's finest to do just that, all of them from various places around Cascadia. With Steve home alone in upper Cascadia, and Zach stuck with a broken down car in middle Cascadia, Michael joins on the phone from the lower Cascadia coast to look back at the 'Caps fantastic win against the Timbers. A strong defensive team effort was on show and the guys break it down, with the help of some audio from both head coaches. Joe and Nick are in the house, their own one, not the studio, to bring their preview expertise to the show and look ahead to what is set to be a dramatic Canadian Championship final second leg in Toronto midweek. The 'Caps head in as the underdogs, but every dog has its day, so can Wednesday be the Whitecaps one? All this, plus we hear from Stefan Marinovic after the win in Portland, look at what the 'Caps lack of spending in this transfer window may mean, Zach joins Steve to look at the weekend's action around MLS West and Argy Bargy feature in this week's Wavelength. Episode 289 - The AFTN Soccer Show (No Room For Error)

August certainly feels like it could be a decisive month in terms of determining how successful we'll look back at Vancouver Whitecaps' 2018 season. It's started well. The 'Caps fielded an understrength side and took a point at New York City. Normally that would be considered a great result, and while good, it only saw them slip further behind in the chase for the playoffs. We look back at the match, hear from both head coaches, and delve into some individual player performances. We also look ahead to the first leg of the Canadian Championship final against Toronto FC on Wednesday, and hear some of the thoughts of Greg Vanney about how TFC will be approaching it. All this, plus does Kei Kamara fancy a chocolate digestive, what ice cream excites goalscorer Erik Hurtado, and we look at the weekend's action in the MLS West and The Last Resort feature in this week's Wavelength. Healthy Haraguchi: Heartbreak for Japan, Brazil saunter on and England up next…

Yet more scenes so unbelievable that we all need to accept that this World Cup is crazy as Belgium come from two down to beat a spirited Japan, with super subs Marouane Fellaini and Nacer Chadli. Prior to the game a hitherto successful psychic octopus was killed in Japan. Makes you think. Alongside this there’s time to look over Neymar’s theatrics, Brazil’s stoic professionalism and we of course take the opportunity to look ahead to England vs Colombia, and even a little further, as we get a little carried away while we have the chance. Variety is the spice of life. Or say they say. Hopefully it is as we have a variety of subjects to cover in the latest episode of the AFTN Soccer Show. Episode 271 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Déjà Vu Again - Vancouver v New England analysis, MLS and Canadian PL chat)

Another week, another draw, another week, another match of individual errors, another week, another game of frustration. Welcome to Vancouver Whitecaps World 2018. Strap yourselves in, it's a bumpy ride. The 'Caps made it four draws in a row on Saturday at home to New England. Now they just need two more in the next two games to set a league record. Go team! We look back at the points dropped to the Revolution, where it all went wrong, where it all went right, and where do we go from here. Episode 265 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Stinko de Mayo)

Remember when Vancouver Whitecaps were being lauded for their excellent road record? That seems so long ago now. Saturday's 1-0 loss in Minnesota was the third straight away defeat for the 'Caps. This one against an already undermanned team that played 40 minutes of the second half with ten men. Definitely a Cinco de Mayo to forget. We look back at the high and lows from the match, talk line-ups and formations, bring you our latest player rankings, and hear from both head coaches, Minnesota's Adrian Heath and Vancouver's Carl Robinson. Where now for the Whitecaps? Did the RSL win last week just paper over the cracks or should we just be content that the team is currently sitting in third spot? We also see how the weekend played out for the MLS western teams, discuss the latest big Canadian Premier League news and other headlines, play another round of Do You Know Who I Am? and Half Man Half Biscuit return for our Wavelength section. Here's the full episode rundown of the main segments from the show:02.14: Minnesota v Vancouver match analysis23.47: Adrian Heath and Carl Robinson audio33.28: Was the RSL win last week just papering over cracks?38.45: Whitecaps player analysis49.01: Do You Know Who I Am?53.07: MLS West Week in Review67.12: Wavelength - Half Man Half Biscuit - Mathematically Safe72.44: BC Soccerweb headlines - featuring Can PL, World Cup, PDL, and other news
