Welcome to The Overlap's football history podcast, It Was What It Was. Special guest and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher join hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper as they explore the legacy of one of football’s most iconic managers: Arrigo Sacchi. Widely regarded as one of the greatest minds in the sport, Sacchi led AC Milan to back-to-back European Cup triumphs in the late 1980s, building a team that Carragher grew up idolising. In this episode, Carragher discusses Sacchi's profound influence on football, how his revolutionary tactics reshaped the game, and the impact they had on Carragher's own playing career. Together, the trio provides an in-depth analysis of Sacchi’s extraordinary career and his lasting mark on the sport. Next week we dig even deeper into the genius of Sacchi, as Jonathan and Rob kick off their special four-part series on his life, starting with his early years. Suj has seen enough and despite a strong start to his FPL season the Wildcard is now active! On the review of all the Gameweek 5 fixtures there is a theme of looking for players on Wildcard as James tries to lead Suj into what he would do if in the same position. And for James it was another positive week against his no Haaland and no Salah strategy, but an early move has been made for GW6 and it's unlikely to surprise. Arsenal assets with be in high demand; so is double defensive the way to go after another resolute showing in earning a point in a dramatic encounter at Manchester City? That game features in the tactical insight into the games where James even found himself impressed by Manchester United; as he was by an improved Tottenham but it was a bad day at the office for West Ham as they were beaten comfortably by Chelsea. Enabling options for selection also feature prominently and James has two midfielders on radar who didn't return at the weekend... Jesse Marsch was the only American smiling after his prediction of a 2-1 Canada win over the U.S. came to pass. Jimmy Conrad, Tony Meola and Brian McBride analyze the USMNT’s first performance since the disastrous Copa America campaign (1:30). The guys discuss the team’s struggles to deal with Canada’s press and speculate as to how Mauricio Pochettino might have viewed the game (09:50). Then, the player ratings don’t make for flattering listening for the likes of Tim Ream, Johnny Cardoso or Yunus Musah (18:15). And while the center back pairing is the area of most concern for the crew, the lack of vocal leaders and physicality is another worrying trait for the Stars and Stripes (36:08). A discussion about the changes Mikey Varas should make for Tuesday’s clash against New Zealand (46:55). And finally, another setback for Gio Reyna, and have Mexico found an international break cheat code (50:20)? An Oasis of joy for Erling Haaland Captainers and Triple Captainers as the big man took home the match ball on Saturday and he wasn't the only hat-trick scorer this weekend as Noni Madueke also hit a treble - all assisted by cold Cole Palmer - as The Blues scored six at Wolves. Suj and James review all the weekend games from Gameweek 2 which saw a continuation of clean sheets which even remarkably featured Tottenham and West Ham keeping the door locked. But it was cleans for Arsenal and Liverpool that helped a Haaland-less James survive the week. There's insight into some of the weekend tactics including Tottenham's very offensive setup, Newcastle concern and why Kevin De Bruyne needs close monitoring. And now James in on Wildcard, with thoughts given on the players under consideration, while Suj has some issues to deal with, such as Christopher Nkunku and Lewis Hall, but he might not panic. Or he might. Some Might Say. The Final Day of Correspondent Week kicks off with Gary Mantle joining James to discuss FPL assets and expectations for Chelsea under new manager Enzo Maresca and a period that should be full of enthusiasm has quickly evaporated due to some chaotic performances in pre-season and further strange transfer dealings. There's conversation on Maresca's intended tactics, what's been going wrong and there's an analysis of the transfer business which continues to leave many Chelsea fans concerned. Plus, Cole Palmer has received the highest ever price rise in FPL after finishing last season as the top points scorer. but currently there are many questions mark as to where exactly he will play in the new system. Therefore should a 4.0 saving be made by investing in Christopher Nkunku? And there's a run through of the squad to see if there are any more FPL assets to consider such as one of the 4.5 defenders, Noni Madueke, or a refreshed Raheem Sterling. But predicting the starting eleven for Gameweek 1 proves a very difficult challenge. At least the fixtures are good... or are they...? Sam Murray joins James to discuss the summer changes at Brighton with Roberto De Zerbi replaced by Fabian Hürzeler, who at 31 becomes the Premier League's youngest ever permanent manager. The Podcast includes discussion on what we can expect tactically from the new man in charge. And there's plenty of FPL discussion which includes interest in new attacker Yankubah Minteh who may thrill from the right and is attainable at 5.5, the same price as the popular Joao Pedro, but will the forward prove his fitness ahead of Gameweek 1? And the brilliant Kaoru Mitoma (6.5) is back fit, but largely being ignored. Perhaps that's because of a difficult fixture schedule which sees The Seagulls play 7 of last season's top 8 in the opening 11 gameweeks, but week 4 & 5 are very attractive with home fixtures against Ipswich and Nottingham Forest, a period that looks perfect to field 4.0 defender Valentin Barco, who if he does well is likely to make interest in any of the rest of the defensive assets at 4.5 undesirable. Day 3 of Correspondent Week kicks off with Wolves fan Bradley Parker joining James to discuss everything at Molineux and despite a very tough opening set of fixtures there's positivity around Gary O'Neil's team and they may be about to move to a back four with more frequency following the sale of Max Kilman to West Ham. There's discussion on the three attacking 6.5 players who may appeal when the fixtures turn, Hwang Hee Chan, Matheus Cunha and Pedro Neto and there's an intro to three new exciting signings in Pedro Lima, Rodrigo Gomes and Jorgen Strand Larsen, Rayan Ait-Nouri at Jose Sa are nicely priced at 4.5 and need monitoring, whilst Bradley believes there may be a permanent 4.0 starter in the team. But with the fixtures looking challenging should they remain a watch and wait? It's a Correspondent Week debut for Ipswich Town and Paul Gaught-Allen, who joins James to discuss everything about last season's Championship runners-up, including Kieran McKenna's crucial decision to stay as manager and whether surviving this season is a realistic aim following back to back promotions. Paul details what we can expect from McKenna tactically and that includes an advanced role for 4.5 left-back Leif Davis who notched a record number of Championship assists for a defender last season. But with every other Town defender priced at 4.0 is Davis worth the extra? And who's best from those 4.0s? Omari Hutchinson has signed on a permanent deal from Chelsea and has interest at 5.5, but there may be other attacking talents that appeal more from within the club. There's an outline of the current anticipated starting eleven and where the club is likely to invest further in the team and squad plus there's discussion on FPL's two most expensive players, Mo Salah and Erling Haaland, who are set to play The Tractor Boys in the first two Gameweeks. Bang! The USWNT rained goals on Germany in a 4-1 victory, their biggest result against a FIFA top-10 side in six years. Clayton and James discuss Monday at The Euros as favourites France and Portugal made it through to the quarter finals and despite the two games not being thrillers there's lots to unpack ahead of the meeting between the two on Friday evening. There's detail on an intriguing tactical battle as France saw off Belgium but The French aren't inspiring, from their 3 goals scored at the tournament two have been own goals and the other penalty. And Portugal aren't inspiring either, they were taken to penalties by a spirited Slovenia in a match dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo missing chances, but ultimately decided by the brilliance of goalkeeper Diogo Costa Tomorrow on Planet FPL: Planet FPL on Euro 2024 discussing the final two games from the last 16 Today on Patreon: The Patreon Q'N'A and Nico's Corner For the full Planet FPL schedule this week, including our offering on Patreon view this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/schedule-july-107229643 Want to become a member of our FPL and SkyFF community and support the Podcast? Welcome to the latest episode of The Overlap’s football history podcast, It Was What It Was. In this week’s episode, we take an in-depth look into the decline of England's most successful manager Sir Alf Ramsey, exploring how his 1966 World Cup winners were beaten by a much-improved West Germany side over two quarter-final qualification legs for Euro 1972. Journalists Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper delve into the tactical revolution of England under Alf Ramsey, from their World Cup win in 1966 to their descent in Euro 1972, as West Germany’s positional intelligence show that England were no longer the best in the world. Jonathan and Rob provide a detailed analysis of Ramsey’s style of play, the build-up to the first leg quarter-final defeat at Wembley, the changing relationship between England and West Germany from 1966 to 1972 and the key players in those tournaments. Our second part is out on Thursday 4th July. If you enjoyed the podcast, please hit subscribe to never miss an episode. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Marcus, Luke and Jim get their heart rates down long enough to recap a truly absurd game of football, as England scrape past Slovakia more by luck than judgement. But who cares, because we’ve got Jude Bellingham. We try to separate what could have happened from what did actually happen as we look over Gareth Southgate’s decisions, England’s tactics and what happens next. Elsewhere, Spain remind us of how sexy football can be, Georgia bow out heroically and the Belgians have banned their French neighbours from honking ahead of tonight’s game. So, England are through to the last 16 of Euro 2024 as group winners but once again were underwhelming in their 0-0 draw with Slovenia. And what did Southgate's comments post-match reveal about how he's handling the challenge of managing at this tournament? Ayo Akinwolere is joined by The Athletic's Oli Kay and Matt Slater, who were both in Cologne as well as football tactics writer Liam Tharme to analyse whether or not England can still succeed with Southgate. Having grown synonymous with their tiki-taka style of play, Spain have so far shown another side at Euro 2024, in beating both Croatia and Italy. So why have Spain moved away from their patient, possession-based approach and will this summer's transfer window see clubs take advantage of the release clause in the contract of one of their most promising stars Nico Williams? Michael Bailey is joined by The Athletic's Pol Ballus, who's in Germany covering Spain during the Euros as well as our La Liga writer Dermot Corrigan. Clayton joins James for a discussion on all things England following last night's 3-0 victory against Bosnia And Herzegovina that ended well but frustrated for long periods. What's the best eleven now? It feels like there are probably 3 spots up for grabs in Gareth Southgate's ideal line-up; left-back remains a concern with continuing question marks over Luke Shaw's fitness, who will partner Declan Rice in midfield appears up for grabs and will it be Phil Foden on the left or someone else? And who makes the final 26 man squad now? Which 7 will be cut and what was learned last night that means there might be some unexpected names that make the final cut?
