Dr. Babak Fozooni, tutor at The Open University, joins Eoin to reflect on the power of football as both a distraction and a form of protest for the Iranian people throughout decades of authoritarian rule. With members of the Iranian Women's team currently applying for asylum in Australia, Dr. Fozooni explains how the sport is deeply entrenched in Iranian feminism, as well as looking to a Men's World Cup where it seems increasingly less likely that Iranian players will take to the pitch come June.

After a non-Premier League weekend, inspired by a Discord question we speculate what would happen if every single Premier League manager became a free agent in the summer. Would clubs stick or twist with their current coach? We play The Rondo, it’s another bad week for JJ… We discuss if the notion of The Big 6 clubs is done and dusted if Tottenham Hotspur are relegated. We then speak about how the current war in the Middle East may impact the men’s World Cup and is impacting the Women’s Asia Cup currently. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Carl Anka, Jacqui Oatley and Dominic King to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin with Saturday’s Six Nations clash between England and Italy. England suffered an historic defeat in Rome, losing to Italy for the first time after 32 previous attempts by the Azzurri. Does this shock result mark the beginning of the end for Steve Borthwick? We then turn to the start of the new Formula 1 season. Our reporter Craig Slater joins us from Melbourne to discuss just how entertaining the opening Grand Prix was, with George Russell taking the win. Then it’s on to the weekend’s FA Cup action, with Max Dowman lighting up the One Call Stadium with an exciting performance, becoming the FA Cup’s youngest-ever player as Arsenal advanced to the next round with a 2–1 win over Mansfield. With Arsenal still in all four competitions, we ask just how realistic a quadruple might be. Carl says he’ll eat his hat — and his shoe — if Arsenal pull it off. Staying with the FA Cup, City came from behind to beat Newcastle 3–1 at St James’ Park and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals and Dominic thinks Pep will end Arsenal this season with more trophies than Arteta. And it was Hollywood drama at the Racecourse Ground, where Chelsea beat ten-man Wrexham 4–2 after extra time. Next, it’s another win for England’s Lionesses, who beat Iceland 2–0 in a dominant display, peppering the goal with numerous chances. But with Spain in their World Cup qualifier group and only one automatic spot up for grabs, do the Lionesses need to be more ruthless in front of goal? We close out with a hot debate on Arsenal this season. With strong set pieces, own goals going their way, scrappy corner battles and rock-solid defending—but a noticeable lack of attacking flair—are Mikel Arteta’s side boring to watch? We’ve seen greatness and not-so-greatness over the first two weeks of the season. Perhaps the real test will be against a team FC Cincinnati has managed to best even during their absolute lows. Toronto FC come into town with two difficult losses under their belt, but they need one more road tilt before their home opener. The Reds have managed to clear their books of two difficult contracts, only to pull in Josh Sargent, the American striker Cincinnati had been pursuing in the past. We talk with Jeffrey from the Toronto ‘Til I Die podcast to get his thoughts on the second year under head coach Robin Fraser. Hello Rank Squad! We thought that with less than 100 days to go now until the World Cup begins this summer, it was time to start to take a look at the tournament in earnest - and the storylines on the pitch that are set to dictate just how this tournament is remembered from a footballing perspective. We split that into three parts. Firstly, we take a look at three of the favourites to win the tournament - holders Argentina, as well as France and Spain - and the narrative threads behind each of their campaigns to come. We look at Argentina's attempt to be the first nation to go back-to-back since Brazil in the 1960's, France hoping to give Didier Deschamps the send-off his illustrious managerial tenure deserves, and Spain looking to begin a new dynasty by backing up their 2024 Euros with a World Cup two years later, just as their Golden Generation did in 2012 and 2014. Then in Part Two, we look at the managers who have traded their club loyalties for a shot at winning the most illustrious tournament of them all at international level - looking at England under Thomas Tuchel, Brazil under Carlo Ancelotti, the USMNT under Mauricio Pochettino, and Germany under Julian Nagelsmann. And finally, in Part Three, we dive into the four teams who have qualified for the first time ever - Cape Verde, Curaçao, Uzbekistan and Jordan - examining their stories, the background, and the manner in which we're expecting them to show up to the party. It's Ranks! Telemundo executives said its coverage of the World Cup featuring nine different play-by-play teams must be exceptional because the tournament will be played at home.

With 100 days to go until the 2026 World Cup, Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Marcelo Balboa dig into the biggest questions facing Mauricio Pochettino. The crew tip their caps to two American centurions (05:38) - our very own Tony Meola and Joe-Max Moore - and identify the biggest areas of concern heading into the tournament: goalkeeper uncertainty and center back depth (09:18). All eyes are on the Noahkai Banks situation - could the Augsburg phenom slip through the cracks with Germany also in the picture (18:10)? Then it’s a wide-ranging Americans Abroad check-in (29:20), including a debate over whether Mauricio Pochettino brings three or four strikers (30:35). Weston McKennie’s new Juventus contract extension (36:39) sparks a conversation about mindset and motivation, and the crew also highlights the Americans still alive in European competitions (47:22). With high-profile transfers being increasingly scrutinised by the football media machine, we wonder why it’s so difficult to properly assess new arrivals to the Premier League without allowing them time to bed in. I mean, remember Dennis Bergkamp’s first season at Arsenal?! Marcus, Vish and Jim get stuck into that. Plus: what should Aston Villa realistically expect from Unai Emery and this team? Who’s had the most fairytale-tinged ending to their career? And, after Neil Warnock parachutes in at Torquay, what other managerial comebacks would we like to see? They then round up some other results around Europe, before heading to the Premier League (19:24). There’s chat about Arsenal’s win over Chelsea, where all three goals were set pieces, Manchester United going third, as well as some of the other results, most of which also contained set pieces. There’s also chat about Arne Slot’s comments about… set pieces (40:31), and how they’re making the Premier League tougher to watch. New series. Eight years deep. Same nonsense. We’re kicking things off with a belter… Pascal Chimbonda and trust us, he delivers. Perhaps the most laid-back man in the world, but my word he’s got some stories. Rocking up at Wigan without speaking a word of English, his time there was eventful on and off the pitch. A brilliant debut season saw him earn a shock call-up to France’s World Cup squad but it all ended in dramatic fashion when he handed in a transfer request in the dressing room straight after the final game of the season. With front-row seats for Zidane’s infamous headbutt, we find out exactly what Wigan’s Pascal Chimbonda says to French legend Zizou after he’s potentially cost him a World Cup winners’ medal. Dubbed Roy Keane’s “worst ever signing”, we dig into what really went wrong between them and along the way hear plenty of stories about being pinned up by Big Dunc, Jimmy Bullard’s antics, and sharing a dressing room with Browny at Doncaster. On this episode of Inside College Soccer, Don Williams sits down with acclaimed soccer author Luciano Wernicke to discuss his latest book, The Lionel Messi Story: How One Man Revolutionized Major League Soccer. Wernicke, author of more than 20 books on global football, breaks down the remarkable journey of Lionel Messi - from a young boy in Rosario overcoming growth hormone deficiency to becoming a World Cup champion and one of the most influential athletes in history. The conversation explores Messi’s defining decision at 14 to leave Argentina for FC Barcelona, and how elite environments, culture, and long-term belief systems create world-class players. The discussion then turns to Messi’s historic move to Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer, the strategic vision of David Beckham, and what Messi’s arrival truly means for the growth and global credibility of soccer in the United States. Wernicke also shares perspective from his time working with the Costa Rica men’s national soccer team, offering insight into what it realistically takes to build a nation capable of winning a World Cup - and whether the U.S. is moving in that direction. A must-listen conversation for players, parents, coaches, and anyone serious about understanding the cultural, structural, and strategic forces shaping the future of the game in America. 📖 The book is available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Books-a-Million, and wherever books are sold. 🎧 Presented by Sports Recruiting USA - www.srusasoccer.com 🤝 Sponsored by www.gapyearsoccer.com

On this episode of The Cooligans, we break down the wild rumor of Antoine Griezmann potentially joining Orlando City and whether he could seriously challenge Lionel Messi’s MLS throne. Gotham FC defender Mandy Freeman joins the show to discuss the club’s championship run, the pressure of defending a title, her decade-long NWSL journey, her passion for fashion, and why the league’s new High Impact Player rule may not benefit players the way fans expect. It's been a while since the boys played. Who's in? Who's out? As the World Cup approaches, the answers to these questions are not always clear, but Greg breaks down what we DO know, and CAN say.

Jimmy Conrad and Charlie Davies sit down with their former coach - and one of the most influential figures in American soccer history - Bob Bradley for a wide-ranging conversation as the USMNT gears up for a home World Cup (04:03). Bob evaluates Mauricio Pochettino's time in charge of the group and what fine-tuning is left to do (05:59). The crew gets into the weeds on shape, flexibility, and how to maximize the March friendlies (14:10). Bob shares his view on the roster options - from the staying power of Tim Ream to what he sees in young center back Noahkai Banks to how he'd manage the mercurial talents of Gio Reyna (16:57). The conversation turns to Bob's own coaching career with an extended reflection on the USMNT's run to the 2009 Confederations Cup Final (34:16). He also revisits his early impressions of a young Charlie Davies and reflects on the players he most enjoyed coaching and watching, and wades into the waters of comparing Christian Pulisic, Clint Dempsey, and Landon Donovan (56:12). On a more personal note, Bob discusses watching his son Michael Bradley's transition into coaching with Red Bulls New York, and why he always sensed that path was inevitable (1:03:46). Join our NEW YouTube page here: https://www.youtube.com/@ModernSoccerCoachTV In this week’s Modern Soccer Coach podcast, I sat down with US Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker for an honest conversation about the future of player development in the United States. If the goal is to become a consistent World Cup contender — not just a nation capable of a one-off run — then the biggest shift cannot happen at senior level. It has to happen in the environments where young players are developed every day. We discussed the numbers behind elite performance, the importance of practice time, the pressure coaches feel to win at younger ages, and why US Soccer is choosing to influence rather than dictate change across the landscape. One theme stood out clearly: there is a difference between a winning mentality and a win-at-all-costs mentality. Elite performance begins with joy. When children feel psychologically safe, encouraged to experiment, and supported as individuals, they build the creativity, confidence, and resilience required at the highest level. If we prioritize short-term results over long-term development, we risk limiting both participation and potential. The pathway to elite soccer is not built on pressure alone — it is built on environments where players love the game enough to invest the thousands of hours required to master it. A big thank you to Zone 14 Coaching for supporting this episode.
