On the show, we fought through some audio and video issues, plus we had to figure out a new way to stream the show. It wasn't pretty, but somehow we got it all fixed before we had a great guest on the show. On today's episode, hosts Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira are joined by new LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. Vanney will discuss some of his thoughts around his coaching style, why he'll be ready for El Trafico, and where he sees areas for improvement on the Galaxy. And, with a team that has missed the playoffs the last three out of four years, there are lots of suggestions! The guys will also discuss what Vanney's introductory press conference was like and what big things stuck out to the guys about his addition to the team. Does he have the capital to demand he gets his guys? And does he really want Cristian Pavon back? Plus, what's with defenders always becoming coaches? Then the guys will talk about the never-ending contract of Jorgen Skjelvik and why he might actually be gone this time before moving on to Julian Araujo and Sebastian Lletget's international calls. We've got a packed live show to kick off 2021, and hopefully, we can be the distraction everyone knows we all need!

That's right. It's when the LA Galaxy leave individual players unprotected for the expansion draft! Yay! But with the draft happening less than 24 hours from when we hit the record button, we're sure the entire MLS world has changed. Hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the entertaining but surprising MLS Cup win for the Columbus Crew and why that certainly hopes Seattle's chances of being considered in the same breath as the Galaxy's dynasty. And also why it shouldn't have surprised anyone with how poorly the Sounders have played in previous MLS Cups. But our real focus today will be mixing MLS's new rules with their old practices and trying to explain the expansion team process and why Cristian Pavon is going to be listed as eligible for the re-entry draft on December 17. And it probably means nothing... probably. Plus, Kevin will look back at some of the Galaxy names that have become successful head coaches and why he believes that the Galaxy have stopped their string of internal development when they can't get a consistent process on the field. It's a quick 60-minute look into the offseason Galaxy, and we're glad you could join us!
Alexi and Mosse open the show with all things MLS Cup (6:50), including the Seattle Sounders and Columbus Crew’s roads to the Final. Also, the USMNT vs. El Salvador, running a pro team and the top No. 9s of all time are looked at in #AskAlexi (1:04:08). Gary is joined by Sheffield United Individual Development Coach, Rhys Carr, who discusses his role, along with the dynamics of player development at the professional level. Rhys gives his perspective on "exposing the player" to their weaknesses in the development process. At youth level, you often see the best players cruise through training sessions, but Rhys explains how a young defender in the Premier League will find themselves up against the best opposition forward sooner rather than later, and there is no hiding place at that level. So testing and challenging the player in every session if possible, is key. He also talks about the process around "search-decide-execute" and how he factors that into the planning process for the young players. Player development is a complex process and Rhys gives an outstanding overview of the variables and factors that coaches at all levels need to take into consideration.

The other legendary half of the Great Wall of Gambia and current head coach of Pacific FC joins us to talk about his time as a professional in Norway, the Middle East, the Timbers, and the Whitecaps. Playing? Sure, but what about the coaching... Did Carl Robinson deserve to be fired? What about that cluster-you-know-what at FC Cincinnati? Who deserves a statue outside of Providence Park? Because it’s unavoidable and we can’t pretend it doesn’t affect people of color, no matter how successful they are, racism also enters the conversation. What you can avoid, however, is aggravation in the box on a set piece, at least after Mr. Kah dishes on the game within the game. The OneGoal guys interview Sebastian Saucedo for the website a few weeks back. In 2019, Sebastian Saucedo (23) surprised many US fans when he left Real Salt Lake, his hometown club, for Liga MX side Club Universidad Nacional, more commonly known as Pumas. Following his move south of the border, Saucedo started scoring goals for his new team as early as January thanks to the scheduling of his new league. Come March, Saucedo was named to the yet-to-be-postponed USMNT Olympic Qualifying roster. With no games coming back in the immediate future, we took some time to catch up with the former RSL Academy stand out turned Liga MX winger. In nearly an hour of complete honesty, Saucedo talks about his early days playing soccer, his success at Pumas so far, why leaving RSL was the right decision, a call from USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter in January and why more American talents out of the ‘97 age group could have made it in Europe.

Logan Gdula was gracious enough to spend an early afternoon with us on a Skype interview during our quarantine. Logan is a young player that's on the brink of MLS. He was drafted #13 overall by FC Cincinnati in their first year as an expansion club (last year). He was loaned to Phoenix Rising and sustained an injury. Came back to FC Cincinnati and made the 18 but never saw the field. But was then loaned to Hartford Athletic to play in the USL close to home. In the offseason, he signed with Charleston Battery to play Right Back. The MLS is still very much in the picture for Logan. With a fresh start at Charleston and the expectation of seeing the field a lot, things are looking up whenever we get this thing going again. Logan tells us all about his soccer journey up until his current position. Another great guy with a bright future!

We start today’s episode of Jules & Andy with a look at some of the abhorrent racist abuse on social media that has been gaining publicity over the weekend. We discuss the possible ways to combat and reduce such abuse, and Jules discusses her own experience as a woman working in the game. Elsewhere, we take a look at an impressive year for Wolves, as they stand on the brink of qualification for the Europa League group stage. With some of the league’s brightest talents playing at Molineux we try to gauge what success might look like for Wolves, as well as the joys of adventure that their fans are tantalisingly close to. There’s also time for a look at some of the young British stars who have hugely impressed in the opening weeks, from James Maddison’s bid for an England place to Jadon Sancho’s scintillating form in the Bundesliga. Gary catches up with Gerard Jones, author of 'Lets Talk Soccer', academy director and USSF instructor. As Gerard believes there is too much emphasis on coaching the collective, they discuss how to connect and develop individual players within the team environment. How do variables such as winning, playing time, trust, setbacks, impact the experience for each player and what can coaches do to improve the relationship with certain players. Today we are launching the Modern Soccer Coach Community Platform - a new concept, specifically designed for all coaches to get access to in-depth work, share new and potentially diverse ideas, and have the option of discussing topics within the game that will change on a daily basis. Have you joined the Modern Soccer Coach Community Platform yet? Coaches who register will have immediate access to over 200 training exercises, all animated and organized into set categories (perfect for preseason planning) but the goal of it is to be more than just a session sharing site so every day you will get fresh new content that will provide context, detail, creativity… some aspects that are missing in social media at the minute. All coaches can register right away for a free two week trial period to check it out… bit.ly/modernsoccercoach

John Shields (@19NCAA) hangs out with Rooster and the Devil to talk about college soccer in the USA. Specifically we go into the talent level in D-1 soccer, development issues, players to watch (shoutout Michael DeShields of Wake Forest), and more. Then we dive into how he and group of guys have created a FIFA mod so that people can play the game as a college squad. We also look briefly at Tottenham since he's a Spurs fan and have some interesting conversation about the USL. Ya dig it?

Back to back wins certainly puts a spring in our step. As does the veritable feast of football that we had around this world this past week. And we talk about a lot of it in this week's show. We kick things off with an analysis of Vancouver Whitecaps' 1-0 win over Portland Timbers in MLS action on Friday night. A great defensive display that saw the 'Caps, temporarily at least, move into the playoff places, but most certainly now in the mix. We look at the good, the bad, and the ugly from the match, the supporters walkout, and the concerns the team still give us. Our feature interview this week is with Whitecaps defender Ali Adnan, as we sit down with the Iraqi international to talk about his footballing life so far, from playing football as a little boy in Iraq to his footballing family, the moves to Turkey and Italy, and now to MLS. We also chat with Marc Dos Santos about technology in the modern game and MLS managers complaining, to Will Cromack about the new TSS Rovers season, continue our 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl celebrations, and more!

Gary is joined by leadership development coach, team builder, culture coach, Molly Grisham. They discuss "problem areas" that coaches face when when building culture including: - Can winning hurt the team dynamics? - How can you create a player driven culture when players do not understand the requirements of success? - Individually, a player who has never been exposed to adversity and is struggling with it… how do you support the player through this process without basically doing it for them? - Cliques in the team: Friendship groups are naturally going to develop but how much should a coach step in to advise groups or break up certain social patterns in the team setting? - Teaching resilience and exposing players to more adversity…. How can a coach do this in a safe and productive way? - Group think and apathy: Teams that have zero friction and, although they follow the rules, they are happy to go through the motions… how can a coach spark a higher level of standard in the team without promoting negativity? International football is back! There could be very exciting times ahead for the home nations aside from poor Northern Ireland, who have a draw Michael O’Neill called “very cruel”. England have an exciting crop of players coming through, Scotland look as strong as they have in years and Wales could do well if Ryan Giggs has got time to be around and coach them. Away from the international stage we have news of a Dickie Borthwick TV appearance, an email section with a jealousy-inspiring spend and the tantalising prospect of the first ever Order of the Ramble Empire… This show is sponsored by bet365 Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected] ***Please take the time to rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you get your pods.
