Ramble Meets... Jason Euell

On today's Ramble Meets... episode, Andy Brassell is joined by former Charlton and Wimbledon forward, turned coach, Jason Euell! Jason burst onto the scene when he scored a remarkable volley on his Wimbledon debut, before establishing himself as a first-team regular and fan favourite across his eleven years with The Dons and Charlton Athletic. He sits down with Andy to discuss learning his craft in that post-Crazy Gang era at Wimbledon, enjoying his best years at Charlton and his determination to rise through the coaching ranks. He also gives his erudite and engaging thoughts on the opportunities available to black coaches in the game and what can be done to promote much-needed diversity throughout the football hierarchy. The Preview Show: Norwich fight for their lives, José’s back (again), and views from a Travel Tavern

With a full weekend of Premier League fixtures to look forward to, the next few days promise to be full of gloriously unfiltered Barclays action. So join Marcus Speller, Andy Brassell and Luke Moore to discuss it all on today’s episode of The Preview Show, sponsored by Betway! We look ahead to pivotal fixtures at both ends of the table, as Norwich look for a much-needed win to keep their slim relegation survival hopes alive, while José Mourinho faces his old club with presumably the same air of disdain and resentment he left with. Elsewhere, we give you the lowdown on Chelsea’s latest signing as Timo Werner puts pen to paper, we hear about Kai Havertz getting cheeky on Twitter, and Andy takes on Marcus in a titanic battle on another edition of Luke’s Game! Arsenal return as only they can, Hawk-Eye proves fallible after all, and the Champions League: Lisbon Edition takes shape

Jules Breach, Jim Campbell and Andy Brassell are here to finally look back over some Premier League action! 100 days without it and we immediately get controversy over technology and Arsenal imploding. The more things change the more they stay the same. In Manchester the follically barren charlatan Pep Guardiola got one over on former assistant Mikel Arteta after a trademark David Luiz implosion, while at Villa Park Sheffield United can count themselves incredibly unlucky after goal line technology was revealed to have a blind spot, something that hasn’t been uncovered in over 9,000 games thus far. We also had time to look at the imperious dominance of the Bayern Munich machine, more cardboard cutout fun and a certain somebody’s gluttonous birthday plans. The Preview Show: Transfer Tinder, Mikel Arteta’s “strange” return to Man City and Shaquille O’Neal

It’s not just the Premier League that’s returning next week but also the Premier League narrative. Mikel Arteta is preparing to return to The Etihad to face old boss Pep Guardiola and we are all EXCITED. West Ham are getting ready too, with a massive mosaic. To whom will this mammoth task fall? Is it not vulnerable to mischief making? So many questions need answering. Leagues One and Two have voted to end their season so we have lots to say about that, while also taking in a surprise visit from Shaquille O’Neal and having a lovely chat about Sir Les Ferdinand flirting with Juventus on football’s new dating app. We also have an open top plane update from a listener and Uncle Pete tells us about his camera roll, memories of a particular sideboard and the Dōtonbori river’s sinister Curse of the Colonel. Fantasy Five-a-Side: Nick Bright

In all honestly, the dream line-up for this week’s episode of Fantasy Five-a-Side might be the hardest, most unforgiving bunch of tyrants you could ever assemble. Nick Bright, DJ on BBC 1Xtra and 5 Live, joins Jim Campbell to talk him through a five-a-side squad that would strike fear into any opposition at your local Powerleague. It features an otherwise stoic goalkeeper - who became a rampant madman on the pitch - a couple of beautifully graceful thugs from the continent and, thankfully, an affable Arsenal legend up top. With the Premier League’s return just over a week away, we discuss the final moving pieces of Project Restart on today’s episode of Jules & Andy! We acknowledge some of the questions that still need answers, including clubs deciding what to do with their fans’ season ticket money and how players will manage any injury worries after their prolonged break. We also discuss Raheem Sterling’s interview on BBC’s Newsnight where he stressed the need for black and minority ethnic players to be represented n the higher echelons of football, from the dugout to the boardroom. The Ramble: Celebration Cam, a Champions League mini-tournament and the inspirational Brendan Rodgers

How we’ve missed Brendan Rodgers. With the Premier League’s return just around the corner he’s talking about “emotionally activating” his players and taking inspiration from Phil Jackson of The Last Dance. Yes. Yeeeeees. This is what we want, and it’s all so close. The Premier League have also discussed setting up a Celebration Cam - a camera for players to celebrate into - which is why they get paid the big bucks, while in the Bundesliga we got our first taste of artificial crowd noise and frankly the jury is out. We also found time to chat Pro Evolution Soccer, marvel at Multipurpose Steve Harper and indulge Pete’s dog borrowing plans, as well as his interminable film club. At The Match Revisited: Dortmund 2-0 Freiburg, 2018

With football across the continent gradually returning, we've been using its absence to look back over some of our favourite episodes of At The Match. Join Andy Brassell as he immerses himself in some of football's best atmospheres, speaking to those closest to the club in the stands and the boardroom. With the Bundesliga taking centre stage in recent weeks, today's retrospective episode takes us to Westfalenstadion, home of Borussia Dortmund, to sample perhaps the best atmosphere around. Andy speaks to Jens Weber of schwatzgelb.de about the international attraction of BVB and how that's received by the fans, just why Jürgen Klopp was made for the club and the unity between rival fans against the authorities' plans to encroach on their matchday experience. The Preview Show: Roy Hodgson defends modern players, the restart gets nearer and Timo Werner to Chelsea?

While chaos has unfolded around us Chelsea have quietly gone about getting some impressive business done, with Timo Werner seemingly on the way, leading us to ask the question; just how handsome is he? As the Premier League nears a return Southampton have looked at Ralph Hasenhuttl and decided “more of that please”, Roy Hodgson has been praising modern footballers and their responses to the current political situation, while Mike Ashley continues to be a silly sausage. Away from all that serious nonsense Marcus introduces us to his Fulham hooligan firm and a trip down the Time Tunnel reminds us of Steve Kean’s not-actually-that-brief reign of terror at Blackburn Rovers. On The Continent: Numerous Bundesliga protests and football returns to Portugal

We’ve got all your continental queries covered on today's episode of On The Continent, as Luke Moore and Andy Brassell guide you through the biggest stories in European football. We begin with the protests by the likes of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Thuram and Achraf Hakimi around the killing of George Floyd and the wider Black Lives Matter movement. As football’s governing bodies vocalise their support for the protests, we wonder whether this is a tipping point for players’ social activism and football publicising wider social issues. There’s also plenty of on-pitch action to get stuck into, as Portugal’s Primeira Liga has started up again! Jules & Andy: The Championship gets a return date, and players' social activism

With Jules unwell this week, Andy Brassell welcomes fellow Football Ramble Daily host Marcus Speller, along with a couple of great guests, to today's episode of Jules & Andy! Then, with various players voicing their support for the family of George Floyd and the wider Black Lives Matter movement, we speak to The Independent's Melissa Reddy about Jadon Sancho's display of activism after his debut hat-trick and why younger players across Europe are far more engaged in highlighting social issues than their predecessors. We’re here to supply with you with the tools to win any football argument on today’s episode of FRD’s Book Club, as we take a look at Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski’s ‘Soccernomics’! Ramble Meets... Danny Murphy (Part 2)

We’re back with the second part of our extended Ramble Meets… interview with former Liverpool, Fulham and England midfielder Danny Murphy! On today’s episode, we rejoin Danny’s story when he left Charlton and joined Martin Jol’s Tottenham. Danny talks to Luke about how the initial differences with Jol gave way to problems in his family life that ultimately hampered his career in North London. He then swapped North for West, joining Fulham, and they reminisce about the club's journey to reach the 2009/10 Europa League final under Roy Hodgson. They also discuss what it’s like challenging a manager whose philosophy isn’t working, wonder whether he could have achieved more and remember Clint Dempsey’s unbelievable reaction to being told he’d been dropped on the day of that Europa League final. Jules & Andy: The psychological strain on professional players, and updates from the Football league & WSL

Your favourite duo on Football Ramble Daily are back with a brand new episode, as we get stuck into the latest news during these unprecedented times. We begin by speaking to psychiatrist Dr. Tim Rogers, who counts a number of professional footballers among his clients, about the mental strain professional players are currently under and their worries around future finances and employment. We then discuss some updates from the Football League, where many smaller clubs are in a precarious financial state as they try to finalise plans for the rest of their seasons. We also look back on some of our favourite moments from the WSL season - which was curtailed this week - and discuss the clubs' hopes for if/how standings may be finalised. The Ramble: Bad defending in Germany, Premier League training and Djibril Cisse’s mathematical mission

The Bundesliga continues to deliver, with positive results for all of our beloved teams - Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Koln - as well as big wins for Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Such merciful release. Back in rumourland Mauricio Pochettino is making it clear that he’d be happy to manage in the Premier League again and those Rafa Benitez to Newcastle rumours just aren’t going away. Elsewhere we saw many pleasing examples of footballers with lockdown hair, there’s some confusing talk about kestrels and we review Goal 3. Oh. Goal 3. At The Match Revisited: Sunderland 3-0 Southend Utd, 2018

As domestic football's return gradually takes shape, we're taking a look back at some of our favourite episodes of At The Match from the last few seasons, where Andy Brassell samples some of the best football atmospheres around. On today's episode, fellow Football Ramble Daily host Jonathan Wilson joins Andy as he heads north for a chilly autumnal afternoon Stadium of Light. Andy sits down with David Rose, the FSF’s deputy chief executive and lifelong Sunderland fan, to discuss the improved relationship between the owners and supporters, and what the Red and White Army supporters group are doing in the local community. We also hear from Peter Daykin on why life outside the Premier League isn't as disheartening as one might imagine. Which episodes of At The Match do you want us to revisit? The Preview Show: Premier League players resume training, a potential return for the Championship and Steve Bruce really wants to keep his job

Lots going on in this show, with actual German football marching on and Premier League teams returning to training! Project Restart is underway. That’s not all though… When you picture Robbie Savage you don’t often think of the term newshound. Afghan Hound, yes, but definitely not newshound. That’s all changed as he’s now popping up with questions at the government’s daily briefings. Is there no end to the strangeness of these times? One thing that may soon be at an end is Steve Bruce’s time in charge of Newcastle. With nobody in place to do it he’s had to give himself the dreaded vote of confidence. G’wan, Steve! We’re rooting for you. Most of us anyway. As well as all this we’ve got chat about our strange fever dreams, Jaap Stam’s unfortunate unveiling at FC Cincinnati, plus Pete Donaldson: Private Plane Spotter and Naughty Museum Connoisseur. On The Continent: Problems at Schalke and what next for Miralem Pjanić?

We’ve got some football to talk about on today’s episode of On The Continent – happy days! Luke Moore and Andy Brassell are in situ and kick things off with a look back at Dortmund’s win over Schalke. We discuss David Wagner’s difficult job to get this Schalke side into shape, as well as trying to unravel the complicated situation around goalkeepers Markus Schubert and Alex Nübel. There’s even time for a look ahead to this weekend’s Berlin derby. Elsewhere we discuss some continental transfer rumours, including Juventus midfielder Miralem Pjanić's potential move to Barcelona and Roma’s reported interest in Moise Kean, and worry about Marseille as they continue to sail through choppy waters! Ramble Meets... Danny Murphy (Part 1)

Join us for the first of a two-part Ramble Meets… special, as Luke sits down with former Liverpool, Fulham and England midfielder Danny Murphy! In part one, Danny reminisces about his journey from cleaning the first team's boots at Crewe when he was 16 to moving to Liverpool and establishing himself in the first-team squad. From thinking he was the victim of a wind-up when Kenny Dalglish first phoned him, to struggling with believing in himself after he moved from impressing at Crewe to training alongside some of the country’s best players, Danny leaves no stone unturned in a fascinating and revealing interview. Jules & Andy: Working at the Bundesliga's return, and players return to training

With the Bundesliga playing its first round of matches in ten weeks, and the Premier League refining the details of ‘Project Restart’, we discuss the significant differences from normality on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. Cologne-based journalist Archie Rhind-Tutt joins us to reveal what it was like to report from Eintracht Frankfurt, as press access was restricted and social distancing rules were firmly applied. We then turn our attentions to the Premier League, as clubs unanimously decided to allow individual training to resume this week. We discuss the effect this will have on the players and wonder how much lead time they will really need before full matches can be played, which look to be a possibility at some point in June. The Ramble: Football returns, premium mannequins and naughty Lacazette

The Bundesliga’s return to action was a strange but very welcome success this weekend, with Erling Braut Haland particularly unfazed by recent events or seemingly anything. Football is also back in South Korea, but that wasn’t what’s been making the headlines due FC Seoul’s decision to fill their stands with “premium mannequins”, which look a lot like sex dolls. Oh no. In Scotland Celtic may soon be crowned champions, in Italy Mauricio “Smoky Maurice” Sarri’s habit may be even worse than we thought and here in England we have some tips to help Steve from last week get his ball back. At The Match Revisited: LAFC 2-2 Vancouver Whitecaps, 2018

We're packing up our metaphorical bags and jetting off with Andy Brassell for another episode of At The Match Revisited, as we take a look back at a time when we could get out and enjoy world football's best atmospheres. Today, Andy heads to Los Angeles to watch LAFC in their inaugural MLS season. He meets up with Jose Salcedo of the District 9 Ultras, plus 3252 members Karla Villaseñor and Sam Ko, to discuss why being in downtown Los Angeles is crucial, and why - even though their local rivals had Zlatan Ibrahimović at the time - they don’t envy the Galaxy. Then, join Andy out on the terraces as Will Ferrell leads the chanting and he basks in the amazing and authentic terrace atmosphere that this young club has managed to create. The Preview Show: The Bundesliga is almost back, Jose Mourinho’s pantomime continues and Harry Kane puts his hand in his pocket

We’re so close to football! The Premier League watches on with interest as the Bundesliga returns with potential lessons for our own Project Restart. It could be June, with a list of “cultural changes” implemented. We’re not sure who is implementing them, but there are definitely a few people we’d like to see kept away from that process. There are also rumours, since denied, that Jose Mourinho has been trying to derail the whole thing as he continues his transformation into a Bond villain, Harry Kane being a lovely chap and a desperate plea from a listener who asks the age old question; can I have my ball back? On The Continent: A thorough Bundesliga preview, and André Villas-Boas wants more

It’s finally here. Sure, one of the biggest derbies in world football will be played out in front of an empty stadium and there’s still the general unease around this era-defining global pandemic, but it’s here. On today’s episode of On The Continent, we preview this weekend’s European football! With the Bundesliga returning on Saturday, Luke Moore and Andy Brassell are here to give you a thorough rundown of the league, including the teams fighting for the title and those hoping to escape relegation. We discuss Bayern’s improvements under Hansi Flick, the exciting look of Bayer Leverkusen and the difficulties in Werder Bremen relying on 41-year-old Claudio Pizarro to save them from relegation. Elsewhere in Europe, we wonder if Ligue 1 really is finished and assess the state of Portuguese football, as it looks set to return in the coming weeks. Fancy getting in touch? Jules & Andy: The Premier League outlines possible solutions, but how likely is each proposal?

So, the Premier League have ruled that 'null and void' and finishing a season with no relegation are off the table, meaning the season will be concluded in one way or another. We discuss this news on today's episode of Jules & Andy! We speak to The Independent's Miguel Delaney about the Premier League's current plans and why he now feels much more confident about football's return. We also discuss the affect this may have on the players, in light of Danny Rose's comments, and numerous clubs' opposition to playing out the season at neutral venues. The Ramble: Disinfection cabinets, Dynamo Dresden and yet another word from Louis van Gaal

We have all the latest on the latest meetings about meetings! To be fair to the Premier League that’s about all they can do at the moment as we seem to be no closer to a concrete plan. That doesn’t matter though, because Louis van Gaal has decided to keep us all entertained by calling Ed Woodward an “evil genius” and “inviting” Jose Mourinho to explain why it only took four days for him to replace him at Man United. There’s a beef stew bubbling away here. In Turkey Besiktas have installed a disinfection cabinet at their training ground and the thing looks like some amazing futuristic tech, so naturally we posit some alternative uses, while we also look forward to the Neville brothers taking each on in some televised garden centre challenge under the new rules and learn that we may be more of an aphrodisiac than we realised. Oh no. We also love Dave Bautista. We just love him and we don’t care who knows it. FRD Book Club: Building the Yellow Wall, Uli Hesse

Luke Moore, Kate Mason and Andy Brassell return for another episode of FRD’s Book Club, this time discussing the definitive historical account of one of world football’s most recognisable clubs: it’s Uli Hesse’s Building the Yellow Wall - The Incredible Rise and Cult Appeal of Borussia Dortmund. Many modern football fans will feel a connection to the German side due to its recent continental successes and fevered match day atmosphere. But, in looking at the club’s history more thoroughly, Hesse’s love letter to his boyhood club presents a more varied backstory. We discuss how Dortmund are placed in the wider context of German football, the fans’ relationship with Jürgen Klopp, and just how close this Bundesliga giant has come to falling away altogether. The Blizzard: Denmark 1-3 Japan, 2010

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, Japanese football journalist Shinobu Yamanaka joins us to discuss a landmark match for his nation at the 2010 World Cup! Japan took the most talented squad they had ever assembled to the previous World Cup in Germany, but didn’t win a match and finished bottom of their group. They returned to the world stage in South Africa and seized their chance to qualify for the Round of 16 with an impressive win over Denmark. We discuss the Japanese public’s perception of this team after their courageous performance, the wizardry of Keisuke Honda and the bewitching - and infuriating - behaviour of that bloody Jabulani football. The Preview Show: The Bundesliga’s return is confirmed, Iniesta babies and Goal 4?

Football is BACK! In Germany. On May 16th. The Bundesliga have confirmed their plans to resume the competition, not without some controversy, and we’re all looking forward to seeing some live football again. Away from that actual news we have a very salty show today, inspired by Andres Iniesta and his baby-making goal against Chelsea in the Champions League in 2009, which apparently led to a spike in births 9 months later. This week he had video chats with some of those kids. Is that weird? That seems weird. Elsewhere Gary Neville shows that he’s even a tough but balanced pundit when defending his city from disgruntled ex-Man United players’ wives, Alan Pardew reveals his bafflement at Dutch players wanting to know what to do on the pitch and Kuno ‘Santiago Muñez’ Becker wants to right the wrongs of Goal 3. On The Continent: The Bundesliga returns, and how might the transfer market change?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a drill: football is coming back. Well, some of it. Without any fans. On today’s episode of On The Continent, we celebrate the Bundesliga’s upcoming return while acknowledging the need for continued caution. We also speak to FC Union Berlin's Christian Arbeit about how their players reacted to the news and what they've been doing throughout lockdown to best prepare themselves for its return. We also discuss some of Fabio Paratici’s recent thoughts about player salaries and how the football transfer market may change drastically in the coming seasons. The Ramble: Newcastle players back Bruce, Project Restart touts neutral venues and could the Premier League move to Australia?

With each passing day there are more and more ideas put forward for how to finish the season. This time around we have Neutral Venues With No Relegation and Do it All in Australia! Some are more sensible than others. It’s not just the Premier League that needs finishing though. What of the FA Cup? Pete reiterates that Newcastle United have scored the most goals so far - because of their replays against lower league opposition - so should probably win it. We’ve got lots more than that though, we’ve got a Dennis Bergkamp fronted consortium sniffing around clubs, we’ve got Jim’s surprising court appearances, Pete “Every day is Tyskie day” Donaldson’s birthday, Luke’s golf insight, some utter filth from Barry Davies, a plea to unify Mother’s Day and the latest entry into Pete’s Film Club. At The Match Revisited: Inter 5-0 Genoa, 2018

We're not just immersing ourselves in any old atmosphere on today's retrospective episode of At The Match – we're off to sample one of the most intense atmospheres in world football. In November 2018 Andy travelled to Italy for a Serie A blockbuster weekend, which concluded with a trip to sample Luciano Spalletti's Inter revival. At the San Siro, he caught up with coach and pundit Kevin Cauet, who discusses what it means about being part of the Inter family and the fans that have kept the club going through leaner times. He also talks about his father Benoit, who signed for the Nerrazzurri in 1997, and recounts his tales of training with Ronaldo and Roberto Baggio. The Preview Show: PSG awarded Ligue 1, Project Restart and Pochettino to Newcastle?

More decisions have been made in Europe as Ligue 1 decides to give the title to Paris St Germain. It’s not yet confirmed if they’ll also give them next season’s title but let’s be honest, they might as well. There are also rumours that the Premier League will resume behind the closed doors of the remote and impenetrable St George’s Park fortress… but those rumours appear to have come from WhatsApp voice notes. On top of all this we’re pitch for Neil Warnock to join the cast of Gogglebox, Marcus and Pete are having some troubles in their long distance relationship, Tim Sherwood annoys everyone and Dave Kitson annoys everyone. On The Continent: The Ligue 1 season ends but transfer rumours roll on

Is football coming back anytime soon? It’s proving impossible to say definitively. As the Premier League’s ‘Project Restart’ gathers momentum, Ligue 1 has announced that they will not attempt to finish this season, after the French government banned gatherings of large people until at least August. We break down that news on today’s episode of On The Continent! This decision has brought on yet more worries for French clubs and the precarious financial states some of them are in, with €600m owed in outstanding transfer funds to those clubs. We discuss their situation as well as developments from Spain, where Julen Lopetegui voiced concerns about the mental and physical demands on players in lockdown, and Germany who are cautiously planning to restart the Bundesliga. Don’t worry, there’s also a portion of meaty football chat; we work out where the likes of Edinson Cavani, Dries Martens and Gonzalo Higuaín may end up plying their trade when football eventually returns! After a stint at Leicester City, he journeyed through a variety of non-league sides before pursuing the journalism career he's become known for. He joins us to discuss his nomadic playing career, including the physical and mental strains that nearly made him quit aged just 24, as well as his second career in broadcasting. Plus, he tells us about receiving a special pair of gold Adidas Predators from Kenny Dalglish! ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods.
