Burton Albion 1-1 Barnsley League One - Friday 3rd April David McGoldrick came to Barnsley’s rescue again as his late equaliser earned the Reds a 1-1 draw at Burton Albion just when it looked like another frustrating afternoon was about to end in defeat. Trailing to Charlie Webster’s goal on the hour mark, Barnsley were staring at another limp loss in a run that is becoming worryingly familiar. Instead, McGoldrick popped up in the 90th minute to salvage a point and spare the Reds a fourth defeat in five matches. It keeps the scoreboard ticking over, but it does little to hide the nagging truth. Barnsley are finding ways not to lose, but not many ways to win either. Early Promise, Familiar Pattern There was at least a bit of intent about Barnsley early on. Conor Hourihane made four changes from the side beaten by Doncaster, with Kieren Flavell handed his first league start of the season, Mael de Gevigney returning in defence, Vimal Yoganathan coming into the side, and Tom Bradshaw leading the line. The Reds started brightly enough too. Inside the opening couple of minutes, Bradshaw nearly gave them the perfect start when he got on the end of a low McGoldrick effort, only for former Barnsley keeper Brad Collins to recover and keep it out. It was the sort of opening that hinted Barnsley might finally deliver something a bit more convincing. Instead, the game gradually settled into a shape we have seen too many times this season. There was an early disruption when Eoghan O’Connell had to come off after an aerial collision with Jake Beesley, forcing Jonathan Bland into the action far sooner than expected. Even so, Barnsley still had moments. McGoldrick fired over after good work from Luca Connell, while Burton carried their own threat, with Beesley causing problems in the air and Flavell needing to deal with a Jack Armer effort as the hosts began to grow into it. Just before the break, Barnsley had two decent opportunities to make their pressure count. A quick move ended with McGoldrick picking out Bradshaw, whose header drifted off target, and de Gevigney then met a Connell free-kick without being able to beat Collins. There were enough openings there to suggest Barnsley could take control. The problem, once again, was making that control matter. Burton’s Moment of Quality The longer the game went on, the more it began to drift in Burton’s favour. Barnsley had seen plenty of the ball in spells, but too often it felt like possession without purpose. Burton, meanwhile, looked more direct, more willing to turn pressure into something meaningful, and eventually that told just after the hour. A loose bounce broke kindly for Kyran Lofthouse, who surged into the box and squared for Charlie Webster to finish. From Barnsley’s point of view, it was a poor goal to concede. From Burton’s, it was simple, sharp and effective. That was the frustration of it. Burton did not exactly tear Barnsley apart all afternoon, but when the opening came, they attacked it with conviction. Barnsley, for all their neat enough moments, too often looked like a side waiting for something to happen rather than forcing it. Hourihane responded by making changes, sending on Reyes Cleary and Adam Phillips for Scott Banks and Patrick Kelly, before de Gevigney, bloodied and unable to continue, was replaced by Marc Roberts. Leo Farrell also came on for Tennai Watson as Barnsley threw bodies and hope at the final stages. Last-Gasp Salvation For long periods, it felt like one of those afternoons where the final whistle would bring another round of frustration, another post-match inquest, and another reminder that Barnsley’s season has drifted into a pattern of nearly moments and missed opportunities. Then, right at the death, they found a way through. A free-kick into the box caused panic, Roberts headed the ball back into the danger area, and McGoldrick did what McGoldrick has done so often this season by being in the right place at the right time. His finish in the 90th minute rescued a point that had looked beyond Barnsley only moments earlier. It was a lifeline, and in isolation it was a fine moment. But it also said plenty about where Barnsley are right now. Too much of the burden still falls on one player, too many games follow the same script, and too often the Reds need a late intervention simply to paper over another underwhelming display. A point at Burton is better than none, and there was at least some character in the way Barnsley kept going. But nobody will be pretending this was a performance that answered many questions. It was another afternoon of flashes rather than authority, of effort without enough cutting edge, and of a team still searching for the consistency that never seems to arrive. Team Line-ups: Burton Albion (3 - 4 - 1 - 2): B. Collins, A. Hartridge, J. Moon, U. Godwin-Malife, J. Armer, D. Williams, S. Krubally, K. Lofthouse, A. Cannon, T. Shade, J. Beesley Subs: K. Adom, K. Roberts Goals: D. McGoldrick (90') Yellow Cards: L. Connell (11'), L. Farrell (86'), M. Roberts (90+5') Match Stats: Statistic Burton Albion Barnsley Possession 52.9% 47.1% Shots 11 11 Shots on target 5 2 Goalkeeper saves 2 4 Aerial duels won 26 29 Fouls committed 10 12 Corners 9 0 Final Whistle This was not a disaster, but neither was it much of a step forward. Barnsley had enough of the ball and enough moments to get something from the game, but once again they lacked the authority and attacking sharpness to really take hold of it. Burton looked the more dangerous side when it mattered, and without McGoldrick’s late intervention the Reds would have been trudging home with very little argument. That is the concern now. Barnsley are still in matches, still having spells, still showing bits and pieces. But football is not won on bits and pieces. It is won by turning decent moments into control, pressure into goals, and possession into something that actually hurts the opposition. McGoldrick spared them this time. He cannot be expected to keep doing it forever.

Rob Jones is joined by Jonathan Northcroft, Julien Laurens and John Cross to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We kick things off with the battle for places in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. Harry Maguire may be fifth-choice at centre-back, but do his recent form and tournament pedigree put him back in contention this summer? Julien argues the case for a fully fit John Stones to anchor the defence, while John considers the case for Ben White’s inclusion after his impressive goalscoring cameo against Uruguay. Next, we turn to the news of Tiger Woods’ arrest following a crash in Florida. Julien reflects on the reality that it barely came as a surprise—and argues it may finally be time for golf to move on. Next, we look at Cole Palmer and the chances he could leave Chelsea FC this summer. We explore his future and the clubs that might be interested in snapping him up. We then turn to the England cricket team, where Ben Stokes’ return is on hold after a cheek injury. Cricket broadcaster Adam Collins joins us to discuss Stokes’ absence and his prospects of returning to County cricket with Durham in early May. And finally, we dive into Arsenal, sparked by George Graham’s comments. While the pushing, shoving, grappling, and set-piece scoring might not be pretty, Graham points out that everyone does it—and Arsenal do it best. John argues the team has been unfairly criticised but must find a way to get over the line by any means necessary. Sunday Supplement is a Sky Sports podcast. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Jacqui Oatley, Riath Al-Samarrai and Martin Samuel to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We open with Arsenal’s 4–0 win at Elland Road, stretching their lead at the top to seven points as Arteta’s side punished Leeds united with ruthless set-piece execution. We then head to a chaotic night at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea were booed off at half-time with West Ham two goals to the good. Liam Rosenior’s side mounted an impressive second-half comeback to win 3–2, but Riath asks: do you applaud a man for cleaning up his own mess? Next, we’re joined by Adam Collins to unpack the news that England cricketer Harry Brook lied about his altercation with a bouncer in a Wellington nightclub last year, now admitting he claimed to be alone in order to protect teammates. Finally, we break down Liverpool’s 4–1 Anfield win over Newcastle, as Florian Wirtz impressed and Hugo Ekitike haunted his long-term admirers with a ruthless first-half double. On this episode of The Breakaway, assistant coaches Martín Vásquez and Bradley Johnson discuss the upcoming 2026 season, give insight into working with Neill Collins, and how the new players fit in Republic's squad.

We talked about what the World Cup will mean for the sport in America, how kids are introduced to and grow up in the game in Scotland, the heartbreaking end of Sacramento's USL-C season, some coaching talk, some Kenny McLean talk, and lots more. Good chat.

Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Jonathan Liew, Charlie Eccleshare and Charlie Wyett to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin with Luke Littler’s emphatic victory over Gian van Veen at Alexandra Palace, securing back-to-back World Darts Championship titles. Are we still underestimating just how good Littler is — and could he one day surpass Phil Taylor’s record of 14 world titles? Attention then turns to the Premier League, as Arsenal edge Bournemouth 3–2. A dominant Declan Rice performance, including a brace, helped extend their lead at the top to six points in a fixture that saw them stumble last season following William Saliba’s red card. Have Arsenal learned the lessons from last year’s title run-in? Next, we turn our attention to the Ashes as England close Day One of the fifth Test. We cross live to Sydney to speak with Adam Collins, who highlights the key partnership between Harry Brook and Joe Root. The discussion also covers Usman Khawaja’s retirement, with the Australian speaking about continuing to challenge racial stereotypes within the game. We then discuss Aston Villa’s impressive form, which has kept them within six points of Arsenal. While Charlie isn’t convinced they’re in the title race, he’s impressed by their performances following the modest work done in the summer. Finally, we’re joined by Gary Cotterill, who reports on Strasbourg’s 1-1 draw at Nice, before bringing the latest as Chelsea close in on Liam Rosenior. Sunday Supplement is a Sky Sports podcast. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Martin Samuel, Dominic King and Julien Laurens to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We start with The Ashes, as Australia defeat England in the third Test in Adelaide to seal the series. Martin labels it a “crushing disappointment” for England, while Julien points out this wasn’t even Australia at full strength. Adam Collins joins the show to praise a dominant Australian performance and predicts a 5–0 whitewash. We then move to Liverpool’s dramatic 2–1 win over nine-man Spurs. Dominic questions Isak’s underwhelming spell after another injury, while Julien points to lingering defensive problems. Next, we ask where Spurs are heading, as Julien argues it’s hard to see what Thomas Frank is trying to do. Also, Manchester United’s chaos continues after a 4–4 draw with Bournemouth, prompting debate over whether Amorim has got it wrong on Kobbie Mainoo and his role in the team. Finally, we turn to the title race: is the pressure mounting on Arsenal? Top of the league but unconvincing, and with Gyökeres’ form in doubt, we ask who should lead the line when fully fit? And after a 3–0 win over West Ham, Man City look dominant in the title chase. Dom says, in a head-to-head, you’d pick Guardiola over Arteta every time. Sunday Supplement is a Sky Sports podcast. On this episode of The Breakaway, head coach Neill Collins joins Connor to recap last season, look ahead to 2026, and discuss all the roster movements.

Will Perry is joined by Jacqui Oatley, Sam Dean and Jack Pitt-Brooke to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin with Mo Salah, asking whether his twenty-minute appearance against Brighton marked a Liverpool farewell before his departure for AFCON. Next, we turn to Arsenal’s late home win over Wolves, with Jack asking whether their recent habit of conceding late goals reveals a vulnerability we didn’t see earlier in the season. We then move to the Ashes, with Adam Collins joining us to discuss how England’s performances have been perceived in Australia. Adam considers the tough conditions in the Adelaide heat for the third Test, and we ask whether England will make changes to the team. Finally, we look at Enzo Maresca’s dramatic comments after the win over Everton, describing it as his worst 48 hours since joining Chelsea. Jack felt the remarks came out of the blue and were notably vague, and while they didn’t appear to be aimed at the fans, we ask whether they reflected a deeper discontent with the club itself. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Jacqui Oatley, Miguel Delaney and Carl Anka to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin with Man City’s win over Leeds. Pep’s side left it late with a last-minute Foden winner, but are they truly convincing? Carl finds their style this season fun to watch, yet a bit too chaotic to win the title. Next, we turn to Spurs’ defeat to Fulham — their third loss of the week — and the boos told the story, as fans watched a side that has won only once at home all season. We then look at Liverpool, who have lost nine of their last twelve, and ask how realistic it is that the club makes a change with Arne Slot? Next, we move to The Ashes. With the second Test starting on Thursday, we speak to Adam Collins about how the Australian press views England’s inconsistency — and what they must do to avoid falling 2–0 behind. Finally, we turn to the Premier League title race with Chelsea vs Arsenal. Miguel is impressed by how suffocating and controlling Arsenal have been in the second halves of games. But while Chelsea aren’t as polished as Arteta’s side, can they genuinely challenge for the title? Carl believes it’s Arsenal’s time. Sunday Supplement is a Sky Sports podcast. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Mark Ogden, Jason Burt and debutant Charlie Eccleshare to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin with crisis-hit Liverpool. Their defeat to Forest at Anfield marked a sixth loss in seven matches, but is it too harsh for Mark to suggest that Arne Slot’s side is on track to become the worst defending champions in Premier League history? Attention then shifts to the Ashes, where we’re joined by Martin Samuel, reporting on an extraordinary opening two days in Perth. Following a chaotic and crushing defeat for England in the first Test — driven by a blistering century from Travis Head — Martin raises serious questions about England’s preparation and their batting order. We then turn to Manchester City, who suffered a 2–1 defeat at Newcastle, undone by a Harvey Barnes double. With a fourth league loss already this season, is Pep Guardiola’s side showing signs of vulnerability? And to what extent has Rodri’s absence contributed to their struggles? Next, we turn to F1 news, and the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where both McLaren cars were disqualified, costing Lando Norris his second-place finish and the 18 points that came with it. With only two events remaining, how will this reshape the picture? We then turn to Chelsea, who moved into second place with a 2–0 win at Burnley’s Turf Moor. Mark is surprised to see them so high in the table — but is he right to argue that they still don’t look like genuine title contenders? Finally, Adam Collins returns — in good spirits — to analyse England’s predictability in the Ashes first Test and their total collapse in the second innings. Will the challenge only intensify in ten days’ time as we head to Brisbane for a pink-ball Test? Sunday Supplement is a Sky Sports podcast. Rob Jones is joined by Jacqui Oatley, Martin Samuel and Julien Laurens to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin by looking at England’s unbeaten World Cup qualification. But is Jacqui right to think that, while praise is due, Tuchel’s real test will be winning the tournament itself? Attention then turns to Scotland. After their 3–2 loss to Greece, everything now comes down to Tuesday night at Hampden, where they host Denmark and hope to top the group with a win. We move on to Wales, who beat Liechtenstein to draw level on points with second-placed North Macedonia and now look to reach the play-offs by beating them on Tuesday. Next, we turn to England’s impressive win against the All Blacks. Martin highlights George Ford’s two drop goals in a 33–19 performance that indicates Steve Borthwick’s approach is bearing fruit. We’re then joined by Adam Collins to preview the Ashes. With just five days to go, Australia are without both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, and Adam believes the key will be how quickly England hit the ground running. And finally, we’re joined by Rob Dorsett, who discusses all things England with John Cross and Jason Burt in Tirana ahead of Albania v England. Sunday Supplement is a Sky Sports podcast. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Jonathan Northcroft, Craig Hope and Jonathan Liew to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin with league leaders Arsenal, who were held to an entertaining 2–2 draw at the Stadium of Light after a dramatic last-minute equaliser from Brian Brobbey. Was this a chink in the armour for Arteta’s side? Jonathan believes Arsenal earned a valuable point given their injury problems in attack. Attention then turns to Chelsea’s commanding win over Wolves at Stamford Bridge. Booed off at half-time but second in the table at full-time, Jonathan admits he’s still not sure what to make of Chelsea this season — and with only two points this season, are Wolves already staring down the barrel of Championship football next year? We move on to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Manchester United salvaged a late equaliser in a frantic 2–2 draw. Is Craig harsh to suggest it felt like a game where both teams lost? Next up, with just twelve days until The Ashes, we’re joined by cricket broadcaster Adam Collins to preview the series. While much of the focus is on the prolific form of Australia’s Steve Smith, we ask whether England are well placed to take the first Test. And Jonathan Liew finds himself compared to a certain England cricketer… And finally, a huge Super Sunday fixture between Manchester City and Liverpool may be key to Premier League title hopes.
