Those Qarabağ boys didn't go down without a fight! Newcastle already had one foot in the round of 16, which allowed Eddie Howe to give Nick Woltemade a run out in midfield. It wasn't pretty, but I guess it kind of worked? Pete tells Marcus and Jim why Newcastle need to be patient with big Nick. Plus, Bodø/Glimt deliver a huge shock as they knock Sporting Clube de Inter Milan out of the Champions League, Joe Hart becomes a coach for a day, and Snoop Dogg leaves a stench in the Swansea City tunnel. Send us Fan Mail (https://www.buzzsprout.com/247200/fan_mail/new) 🎙️ Episode 122: Coach’s Voice (Episode 1) Episode 122 marks the launch of our brand-new Coach’s Voice series — where the conversation starts with you. In this first edition, Scott and Ray respond to four thought-provoking questions sent in by coaches who listen to the podcast. These are real challenges from real environments, and the discussion is honest, practical, and grounded in lived coaching experience. This episode is less about theory — and more about the realities of coaching in today’s game. 🗣️ The four questions discussed: ⚽ 1. The Match Day Environment How do we create a match day atmosphere that supports development rather than fear? Scott and Ray explore the role of the coach on game day, emotional tone, parent behaviour, and how match day can either reinforce or undo the work done during the week. 💭 2. Building (and Protecting) Player Confidence What does confidence really mean in young players — and how easily can we damage it? The conversation explores the difference between praise and belief, the impact of language, and why confidence is often built through challenge, not comfort. 🎯 3. Over-Coaching Are we saying too much? Scott and Ray reflect on the temptation to control every moment, the dangers of constant instruction, and why silence can sometimes be the most powerful intervention a coach can make. 🧩 4. Tactics & Structure vs Freedom & Creativity How much structure is too much? Where is the balance between giving players a framework and allowing them to solve problems? The discussion dives into whether rigid tactical systems can unintentionally limit game intelligence — and how coaches can design structure that still allows expression. Throughout the episode, Scott and Ray share practical examples from their own environments, challenge common coaching habits, and encourage deeper reflection on how our behaviours shape player experience. This is an episode designed to make you think about how you show up — on the grass, on the sideline, and in your communication. 🎧 Coach’s Voice – Get Involved Coach’s Voice episodes are driven by you. On Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Liverpool fan Dan Lord and West Ham fan Chris Stone to discuss the latest at their clubs ahead of Saturday's meeting at Anfield which could have big implications at both ends of the table. Liverpool are hoping to secure Champions League qualification for next season and consecutive 1-0 away wins has them in contention to do so, but could they be distracted by other Cup commitments? West Ham remain 18th, but have lost one in six and have Nottingham Forest and Tottenham in their sights, there's discussion on the battle to stay up and what The Hammers may need to escape - and there is reason from both perspectives to suggest in the immediate West Ham could cause a surprise on Saturday. Plus, all the key FPL assets covered, with Liverpool very much on mind with a great immediate run of fixtures. There's coverage on Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai, Florian Wirtz, Mo Salah and Hugo Ekitike. But FPL managers would be well advised to keep Hammers assets on mind, with Mads Hermansen, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Matheus Fernandes, Crysensio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen all giving reason to monitor. European Nights returns as Rog and Rory Smith look ahead to the second legs of the Champions League knockout playoff round. They begin in Lisbon, where alleged racist abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior during Real Madrid’s game against Benfica led to a stoppage and sparks a wider conversation about accountability, institutional response, and whether football is doing enough to protect its players. Then it’s on to Istanbul, where Galatasaray’s emphatic win over Juventus spotlights Turkish spending power and deepens concerns about the broader state of Italian football. Finally, they turn to the Europa Conference League, where Crystal Palace were held to a draw by HŠK Zrinjski Mostar and Oliver Glasner’s call for fans to “stay humble” becomes part of the conversation after the first leg. Plus, Rory delivers his latest continental culinary recommendation from Istanbul. Welcome back to It Was What It Was, the football history podcast. In this second part of our two-part special on football hooliganism, co-hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper trace the roots of football violence from the 1890s through to its transformation into organised ‘firms’ in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. They discuss the origins of the word ‘hooligan’, early crowd disorder and FA crackdowns, and how post-war prosperity, youth subcultures, away travel and ‘taking ends’ helped create a new kind of fan conflict. The episode also covers the European and England-team flashpoints of the 1970s and 80s, the political and policing response to the Popplewell Report, with later links to post-Hillsborough reforms and why large-scale hooliganism declined. You can listen to this episode ad-free over on our Patreon - Follow the link here - or go to Patreon.com and search for It Was What It Was. You will also get access to our World Cup countdown, magazine retrospectives and bonus episodes as well as a monthly Q&A with Rob and Jonathan. 01:39 Where the Word ‘Hooligan’ Comes From (1890s London) 04:03 Football Fever: Mass Crowds and Class Anxiety 12:17 What Early ‘Hooliganism’ Looked Like: Pitch Invasions & Crowd Control 17:43 Players Under Attack 20:25 Fan-on-Fan Violence Emerges & the Rise of Away Travel 22:08 Cup Finals, ‘Football Specials’ & Patronising Press Panic 27:27 Post-War: The 60s–70s Gangs Are Coming 29:02 Teddy Boys, Rock ’n’ Roll Panics & Mods vs Rockers 31:02 Merseyside: Away Travel & the Rise of Chanting 36:53 Taking Ends: Territory, Undercover Trouble & the New ‘Game’ 41:58 Europe & England Abroad: From Paris 1975 to Euro 1980 44:00 1980s Casuals, Designer Gear & Firms Arranging Fights 48:43 1985: Luton–Millwall, Heysel, Thatcher & the Popplewell Report 51:28 Aftermath: CCTV, ID Schemes & Taylor Report 53:50 Global Legacy: Ultras, Copycat Firms & Why Football Identity Endures Hosted on Acast. There’s some important admin up top, but once that’s all out of the way, Musa and Ryan turn their attention to the Premier League title race once more after what felt like a very important few days. They begin with Arsenal’s 4-1 win at Spurs in the North London derby (03:53), which saw them maintain a five point lead at the top of the Premier League. There’s chat about braces for Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyökeres and the response of Mikel Arteta’s side, following the draw at Wolves in midweek. There’s a bit of chat about Spurs’ position in the table and whether they can realistically go down (24:29), before heading to Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday (30:30), plus some thoughts about the title race in general. After a quick round-up of the rest of the Premier League, they wrap up results elsewhere (49:07), including La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue and more! The Get Right Gang strike again... the Doctor is in... However you want to say it, the fact of the matter is, Arsenal win comfortably over Spurs thanks in large part to two players who have been much-maligned for much of the season. Andrew and JJ share their thoughts on Tottenham's ineptitude, Tudor's realization of the situation at hand and Gabriel doing Gabriel things. The boys also discuss Manchester City's important win over Newcastle and Nico O'Reilly making a a claim to get on the plane to North America this summer. Then, we're talking Salah's struggles, Chelsea's frustration and a full breakdown of MLS' return to action. Oh, and we'll have our final thoughts on the 2026 Winter Olympics as well. Suj and James fared very differently again in FPL in GW27 as clean sheets were bust, well owned players flopped but one hauler for James in Nico O'Reilly made the difference; but there is no doubt as James even concedes, that there was big slice of luck that he even still owned him. That was the highlight of a weekend for James, which ended with another North London Derby humbling as Tottenham continue to look nervously over their shoulder at West Ham and Nottingham Forest, who both failed to score but were unlucky to do so. There's a much promised look at Rayan and comparison to other midfielders in a similiar price bracket. Bournemouth along with Brentford, Fulham and Liverpool assets are likely to be popular this week, should Arsenal players be binned despite Sunday's comfortable win, Chelsea's brilliant fixture run is over and they slipped up against Burnley, should their assets including the in-form Joao Pedro be moved on too? All the games covered, the OOP not called O'Reilly catching the eye despite a blank and lots more...
