Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Jonathan Liew, Martin Samuel and Jack Pitt-Brooke to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We kick off with Manchester City’s win over Leeds United at Elland Road; and while the sporting headline was Antoine Semenyo’s goal pulling Arsenal back to within two points with games level, we also address the City fans booing the Ramadan break and discuss the possible consequences. Then it’s over to Arsenal. With 15 goals so far in his debut season, we ask whether Viktor Gyökeres can be the striker to fire them to the title. Jack isn’t convinced, arguing that a more mobile profile like Hugo Ekitike might have been the better fit for Mikel Arteta’s side. We also turn to Chelsea and ask whether Liam Rosenior’s side are slipping further behind Arsenal. Jonathan argues that Arsenal have pulled ahead, widening the gap between the two London rivals. Then, we break down Liverpool’s 5-2 win at Anfield against a struggling West Ham. With seven of their last nine league goals coming from corners, could Liverpool be the new kings of set-piece attacks? Finally, Tottenham face a crucial run with two London derbies and a tough trip to Atlético on the horizon. Could this be the moment when Igor Tudor’s real business begins? The bad news? The 0-0 draw at home was convincing at best and downright difficult watch at worst. So what can the Galaxy do? Hosts Josh Guesman and Sophie Nicholaou discuss the Galaxy's woes in their first 270 minutes of soccer in 2026 and why the midfield still feels disconnected. But maybe the defense is stepping it up while the midfield and offense figure it out? No shots allowed on goal for San Miguelito, and the Galaxy have only given up one goal in the first three games (minus the PK against NYCFC). But can the Galaxy's defense do it all? And what happens if the Galaxy get scored on first? Can the offense figure it out before the pressure really ramps up on this team and the coaching staff? Jimmy Conrad and Charlie Davies sit down with their former coach - and one of the most influential figures in American soccer history - Bob Bradley for a wide-ranging conversation as the USMNT gears up for a home World Cup (04:03). Bob evaluates Mauricio Pochettino's time in charge of the group and what fine-tuning is left to do (05:59). The crew gets into the weeds on shape, flexibility, and how to maximize the March friendlies (14:10). Bob shares his view on the roster options - from the staying power of Tim Ream to what he sees in young center back Noahkai Banks to how he'd manage the mercurial talents of Gio Reyna (16:57). The conversation turns to Bob's own coaching career with an extended reflection on the USMNT's run to the 2009 Confederations Cup Final (34:16). He also revisits his early impressions of a young Charlie Davies and reflects on the players he most enjoyed coaching and watching, and wades into the waters of comparing Christian Pulisic, Clint Dempsey, and Landon Donovan (56:12). On a more personal note, Bob discusses watching his son Michael Bradley's transition into coaching with Red Bulls New York, and why he always sensed that path was inevitable (1:03:46). The 2026 MLS season didn’t start the way Columbus envisioned. On this episode of The Wisemen Say, we break down the Columbus Crew’s 3–2 season-opening loss on the road to the Portland Timbers. Was it defensive lapses? Game-state management? Or simply early-season rust under the lights? We analyze the key tactical moments that swung the match, including where the Crew’s back line struggled in transition and how Portland capitalized in the final third. We’ll also evaluate individual performances — who impressed, who raised concerns, and what this result means heading into Matchday 2. Plus: Positives to build on despite the loss Adjustments the coaching staff must consider immediately Early overreactions (and which ones we’re pumping the brakes on) Listener reactions from the opener It’s one match in a long season — but opening night narratives can linger. Sixteen games. Sixty-two goals. Two breathless weeks of UEFA Champions League playoff drama. Has Europe’s elite competition ever been this entertaining? And with the away-goals rule gone and a new format delivering chaos, comebacks and late drama... Is this proof that the changes are good for football? On the other hand VAR is back under the spotlight too, after another hugely controversial decision involving Lloyd Kelly and Juventus. What needs to be done at the top to stop referees taking over the game? And then there’s Newcastle United. It’s been a monumental two years: Champions League knockout football and silverware secured for the first time in 70 years. Should Eddie Howe be receiving more credit? And should his name already be mentioned alongside club icons like Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan? The Rest Is Football is powered by Fuse Energy. Join our NEW YouTube page here: https://www.youtube.com/@ModernSoccerCoachTV In this week’s Modern Soccer Coach podcast, I sat down with US Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker for an honest conversation about the future of player development in the United States. If the goal is to become a consistent World Cup contender — not just a nation capable of a one-off run — then the biggest shift cannot happen at senior level. It has to happen in the environments where young players are developed every day. We discussed the numbers behind elite performance, the importance of practice time, the pressure coaches feel to win at younger ages, and why US Soccer is choosing to influence rather than dictate change across the landscape. One theme stood out clearly: there is a difference between a winning mentality and a win-at-all-costs mentality. Elite performance begins with joy. When children feel psychologically safe, encouraged to experiment, and supported as individuals, they build the creativity, confidence, and resilience required at the highest level. If we prioritize short-term results over long-term development, we risk limiting both participation and potential. The pathway to elite soccer is not built on pressure alone — it is built on environments where players love the game enough to invest the thousands of hours required to master it. Juventus followed suit on Wednesday night meaning Italy’s only round of 16 representative is Atalanta. So, is Italian football in crisis or this season's performance just a blip? On a night where Vinícius Júnior didn't need to answer to anyone, he did anyway with a brilliantly taken winner against Benfica. The dance goes on. Pete and Luke are joined by David Cartlidge to look back on the action across Europe last night – including further depressing scenes on both sides at the Bernabéu, as David explains. José Mourinho behaves like a prat too, of course. We also unpack perhaps the worst red card decision in recent memory in Juventus vs Galatasaray. Poor lovely Lloyd Kelly! Adam Hurrey, Charlie Eccleshare and Nick Miller entertain this month's listener entries for Mesut Haaland Dicks, as the Clichés faithful nominate their niche footballing fascinations and irritations. Among the selections are the mid-game solidarity between opposing 5-a-side goalkeepers, top-half teams with wildly anomalous goal differences, managers who performatively refuse to watch their players taking penalties, and the attitude of pubs towards their flag-based bunting during major tournaments. Meanwhile, the Adjudication Panel enjoy a quintessentially Scottish football phone-in caller and a listener flags a very niche noise made by a commentator that we will now never be able to ignore.
