Call It What You Want, presented by Zillow, dives into a pivotal moment for the USMNT as the March camp ramps up ahead of a high-profile friendly against Belgium. Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Tony Meola break down the club form of Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun (08:15), and debate whether the USMNT’s attacking core is finally finding its rhythm at the right time. The crew also assess Malik Tillman’s first season at Leverkusen (15:53) and discuss who should be trusted from the penalty spot when it matters most (18:55). Plus, after Tim Ream calls this the “most important camp” yet, the crew reflect on their own experiences fighting for spots with the national team - and push back on the idea that performances in camp alone determine a coach’s decisions. So what really matters to Mauricio Pochettino when evaluating his bubble players (31:57)? Plus, Ricardo Pepi's move to Fulham looks in doubt (48:33) while Orlando City get a big boost with Antoine Griezmann set to join the MLS strugglers (54:35). Hello Rank Squad! It's the second Champions League Takeaway of the week, looking back at Wednesday's action from the First Legs of the Round of 16 - where chaos reigned again and goals flowed freely. We start at the Bernabeu, where Fede Valverde's hat-trick carried Real Madrid to a 3-0 win over Manchester City in by far their best performance under Alvaro Arbeloa, and where Los Blancos went back to looking like a side who could win this competition once again. Reigning Champions PSG also had an excellent night at home, although their 5-2 win over Chelsea was probably a bit of a flattering scoreline for Luis Enrique and co. A back-and-forth encounter gave way to a PSG onslaught in the final stages, with a little help from Chelsea keeper Filip Jörgensen, and some real quality from Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, who came off the bench to bag a brace and give them a significant advantage for the second leg at the Bridge. In Part Two we head first to Germany - where a very impressive Leverkusen were a little bit unlucky in some ways to eventually be pegged back for a 1-1 draw against Arsenal - with former Werkself hero Kai Havertz scoring the late equaliser from the spot on what would have been an emotional evening for him; and also to the Arctic Circle, where Bodø/Glimt's incredible campaign stayed right on course with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Sporting, in a performance which showcased the very best of what Kjetil Knutsen's side are capable off - some breathtaking football again. It's Ranks! And remember, if you’d like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon? The Euro crew are back as Jimbo, Pol Ballús, James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Seb Stafford-Bloor (in person!) assemble for a bumper look ahead to Matchday 1 in the Champions League. Barcelona proved it’s a case of no Yamal, no stadium, no problem - routing Valencia 6-0 in front of less than 6,000 fans at the Johan Cruyff Stadium. But it’s Real who continue to set the early pace - reduced to 10-men but still able to get the better of Sociedad to maintain their perfect start to the season. The game of the weekend came in Serie A, where the Derby d'Italia certainly didn’t disappoint as the Thuram brothers took centre stage in a 4-3 thriller in Turin. Plus - Antonio Conte 2.0 shows he’s not as inflexible as everyone thinks - with his Napoli side coasting to a 3-1 win at Fiorentina to also make it three wins from three at the start of the campaign. Bayern warmed up for the visit of Chelsea with an emphatic 5-0 Bundesliga victory over Hamburg on Saturday, while Leverkusen got the post-ten Hag era off to a winning start in their 3-1 beating of Frankfurt - despite being reduced to nine men! PSG suffered injury blows aplenty in their 2-0 win over Lens which featured an emotional goodbye to one of their own - Presnel Kimpembe - after more than 20 years at the club. Plus, how equipped are Marseille to come away from the Bernabéu with a result in one of the most intriguing ties of the round? All that plus training ground cats, Charli xcx’s wedding, nights out in Monaco and a whole lot of innuendo (we can only apologise). Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the week or fortnight or whenever - and a UCL tease (00.45) • PART 2: La Liga review - Barca win big while Madrid stay perfect (11.40) • PART 3: Serie A review - 4-3 thriller in Turin and a new look Conte (26.10) • PART 4: More Serie A - just for Jules! The latest on Lookman (50.45) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - Bayern looking ominous (57.50) • PART 6: Ligue 1 review - A late Mbappé winner and fury towards BlueCo (71.15) Hosted on Acast. Jimbo’s joined by Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús, Seb Stafford-Bloor and James Horncastle for your weekly dose of football chatter from across the continent. We begin in Germany, where Bayern Munich got their title defence underway in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig. Harry Kane picked up where he left off last season, scoring a 13-minute hat-trick to take him to a ludicrous 65 goals in 64 Bundesliga games. Not such good news for Erik ten Hag’s Leverkusen though - beaten 2-1 by Hoffenheim at the BayArena. In Ligue 1, despite the chaos off the field Marseille found some unity on it to beat Paris FC 5-2 at the Vélodrome, while PSG recorded another narrow 1-0 win as their underwhelming performances continued. Olivier Giroud stole the headlines with a 91st minute winner for Lille against Monaco - the 350th goal of his professional career! Over in La Liga, there was late drama as Barcelona fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Levante. Meanwhile Real Madrid made it two wins from two themselves in far more comfortable circumstances at newly promoted Real Oviedo. And there were plenty of intriguing scorelines in the first week of Serie A - including Inter’s 5-0 rout of Torino, Max Allegri’s Milan beaten 2-1 by the promoted Cremonense - and KDB kicking off life at Napoli with a goal in their 2-0 victory at Sassuolo - but he'll have to go some way to take Scott's crown... Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Unsatisfactory sausages & moments of the weekend (00.45) • PART 2: Bundesliga review - Kane just scores goals - and Leverkusen just look bad (11.35) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - Marseille chaos continues as Giroud rolls back the years (24.55) • PART 4: La Liga review - Barca stage yet another comeback as Real start strong (35.05) • PART 5: Serie A review - Inter look angry while McTominay still wears the crown (48.05) Hosted on Acast. Musa and Ryan focus their attention on the final Clásico of the season, which saw Barcelona come from two goals down to win 4-3 over Real Madrid. The victory all but sealed the title for Hansi Flick’s side, who can confirm it with a win at Espanyol on Thursday. They then head to Germany (22:00), where Thomas Müller and Xabi Alonso said goodbye to the Bayern and Leverkusen fans, Dortmund continued their push for the Champions League, St. Pauli all but guaranteed that they will stay up, and Hamburg finally confirmed their return to the Bundesliga. Then they discuss Barcelona’s win against Benfica and some more magic from Lamine Yamal (17:02). Bayern Munich completed the job with ease against Leverkusen (24:27), and their opponents in the next round—Inter—saw off Feyenoord at San Siro (27:28). Musa and Ryan begin with an amazing result for Liverpool, who scored with their second shot to come back from Paris with a 1-0 lead against a PSG side who were brilliant but came up against a mighty Alisson Becker performance (02:52). Bayern are all but through, after a 3-0 win on what was a very disappointing night for Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen (10:10). Barcelona held out for a 1-0 win in Lisbon, despite being down to 10 for 70 minutes (15:22). Inter beat Feyenoord in Rotterdam, and Lautaro Martínez became Inter's all-time leading Champions League scorer (22:04). There were some big games at the top of tables this weekend, featuring draws, some wins, and a lot of missed chances. Musa and Ryan begin with Juventus’ crucial 1-0 win over Inter in the Derby d’Italia (03:20), which came as a huge relief to Napoli, who dropped points for the third game in a row. They then head to Leverkusen, who were frustrated by Bayern and held to a goalless draw, which hindered their title hopes (09:25), before dropping in on La Liga, where both Real Madrid and Atleti went down to 10 men and dropped points (14:44). Finally, they head to the Premier League (22:38), where Kaoru Mitoma scored a goal-of-the-season contender; Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City won at the top of the table; and there was more Moyes magic and a much-needed win for Spurs against Manchester United. There’s also chat about the Copa del Rey (10:04) and Liverpool and Newcastle putting in brilliant performances to set up an EFL Cup final meeting at Wembley (12:03). Jimbo’s joined by his continental crew - James Horncastle, Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús and Seb Stafford-Bloor - to look back on the latest week of action from across Europe AND look ahead to the decisive Champions League matchday 8 ties. Nine teams have already been eliminated from the competition with three more to go, but can Manchester City avoid being one of them? Belgian football expert Kristof Terreur joins us to preview their must-win game against Club Brugge. Elsewhere, it’s also finely poised between Stuttgart and PSG who sit 24th and 22nd in the table… Back to domestic matters, and in Serie A Napoli continued their fine form and made it 7 wins on the bounce as they fought back from a goal to win 2-1 over Juventus and end their unbeaten record. Plus, drama at the San Siro as Conceição and Calabria almost came to blows… In La Liga Kylian Mbappé bagged his first hat-trick for Real Madrid as they went four points clear at the top of the table after a 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid. That’s after Atléti were held to a 1-1 draw with Villarreal, while Barcelona put just the seven past Valencia as they got back to winning ways in the league. Over in Germany, Bayern moved six points clear at the top after their 2-1 win at Freiburg, while closest rivals Leverkusen saw a two-goal lead evaporate as they were held by Leipzig. And in Ligue 1, PSG dropped points for the fifth time this season in a 1-1 draw with Reims at the Parc de Princes. But they’ve actually extended their lead at the top to 10 points after Marseille were beaten 2-0 by Nice in the Derby de la Mediterranée. Produced by Lucy Oliva. Their win over Forest took them level on points with Chelsea, who lost 3-1 at the Etihad, where Omar Marmoush impressed on his debut (10:44). There’s chat about another Mo Salah stat, as Liverpool maintained their lead at the top (16:37), as well as the rest of the weekend’s games and a big fallout to that red card at Wolves (19:57). They then head to the Bundesliga (30:36), where Ryan was at the Millerntor to see St. Pauli’s 3-0 win over Union that saw them climb to 13th on a weekend when Leverkusen lost ground on Bayern and the Bundesliga delivered yet again. Jimbo’s got his European gang alongside him as James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor and Julien Laurens look back on the latest action across the continent - and look ahead to matchday seven in the Champions League. We begin with a look ahead to some of those key UCL ties, including Wednesday night’s heavyweight 25th v 22nd battle between PSG and Manchester City. Plus, Liverpool look to make it seven wins from seven when they host high-flying Lille and Villa make the trip to Monaco. There was late drama in Serie A as Romelu Lukaku scored the winner in a 3-2 victory in Bergamo to further derail Atalanta’s hopes of a first Scudetto. It means Antonio Conte’s side are three points clear at the top of the table, but have played a game more than chasers Inter Milan who picked up their own 3-1 win over Empoli to keep up the pressure. Over in La Liga, promoted Leganes pulled off yet another shock as they ended Atlético Madrid’s club-record 15-game winning run. It’s a result that handed the advantage over to Real - with Mbappé and co fighting back from conceding after just 28 seconds to beat Las Palmas 4-1. In Germany, Bayern Munich’s lead at the top stays at four points after forgotten man Leon Goretzka bagged a brace in their 3-2 win over Wolfsburg. Chasers Leverkusen made it 11 wins in a row, with lateness no problem this week for Florian Wirtz who got an assist and brace of his own in their victory over Monchengladbach - an 11th win in a row in all competitions for the reigning champions. Plus, could a certain former Manchester United manager be parachuted in to save Dortmund as their season continues to implode? And in France, you guessed it… PSG’s unbeaten run continues - this time coming from behind to beat Lens 2-1 and extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points. That’s after closest challengers Marseille were held to a 1-1 draw by Strasbourg. Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend (00.45) • PART 2: Champions League previews (12.30) • PART 3: Serie A review - Napoli beat Atalanta to strengthen title hopes (23.25) • PART 4: La Liga review - Atleti’s 15-match winning run over as Real go top (36.25) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - Big trouble for Dortmund as Leverkusen keep winning (41.10) • PART 6: Ligue 1 review - PSG’s lead stretched to nine points (51.25) Hosted on Acast. Jimbo’s joined by a full complement of European experts as Pol Ballús, James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and the returning Seb Stafford-Bloor are on hand to look back on a busy weekend of action. We begin in Saudi Arabia, where Barcelona stunned Real Madrid to win the Supercopa de España in emphatic fashion. Back on home soil, Atleti went top of La Liga after a club record 14th win in a row in all competitions courtesy of their 1-0 victory over Osasuna. The Bundesliga is back after die Winterpause - and it returned in style on Friday night as Leverkusen made it nine wins in a row and inflicted Dortmund’s first home defeat of the season as they ran out 3-2 winners. Plus, which striker who scored a remarkable goal this weekend gets a comparison to Mark Viduka?! Over in Serie A, Napoli sit top of the pile after their 2-0 win over Verona - but it looks like Kvaradona could be on his way out... Meanwhile, Atalanta stuttered to their second consecutive draw to fall behind Inter in the table. Draw specialists Juve made it a remarkable 12 stalemates from their 19 league fixtures after it finished 1-1 in the Turin derby. And in Ligue 1, PSG stay unbeaten and seven points clear at the top of the table after their 2-1 win over Saint-Étienne, while Marseille try to keep up the pressure with their 2-1 victory at Rennes. Plus, Didier Deschamps will be leaving his role as France manager after the 2026 World Cup - but was it wise to announce the news now? Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend (00.45) • PART 2: La Liga review - Barca blow away Real (again) as Atleti can’t stop winning (8.25) • PART 3: Bundesliga review - Leverkusen shine without Wirtz as Kane keeps his cool from the spot (19.05) • PART 4: Serie A review - Napoli are top but prepare to lose Kvaradona (31.25) • PART 5: Ligue 1 review - Didier Deschamps era given end date while PSG eye invincible season (50.15) Hosted on Acast. They recap some of the biggest games, beginning with Barcelona’s win in Dortmund (7:31) and Juventus’s 2-0 win over Manchester City that puts pressure on Pep Guardiola in the final two match days (14:15). There’s shouts for Arsenal (20:30), Leverkusen scoring the first goal anyone has against Inter this campaign (23:52), plus the brilliant Atalanta and Real Madrid game, before rounding up all the rest of the results! Jimbo’s got Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús and James Horncastle alongside him for a deep dive into a fascinating weekend of action across the continent. It’s fair to say the Serie A title race is hotting up, with just two points separating Napoli in first and Juventus in sixth! That’s after Inter and Napoli shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the San Siro, while Atalanta, Fiorentina, Lazio and Juve all picked up big wins. Real Madrid clawed back some ground in the La Liga title race after their 4-0 win over Osasuna which included a hat-trick for Vinicius, a first goal of the season for Jude Bellingham - and a devastating injury for Eder Militao. They’re now six points behind Barcelona with a game in hand after Hansi Flick’s side fell to only their second league defeat of the season at Real Sociedad in controversial circumstances... Bayern Munich find themselves five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table after their 1-0 win over St Pauli courtesy of Jamal Musiala's sensational strike. Meanwhile, Dortmund’s horror start to the season rumbled on with a 3-1 defeat at Mainz - and Leverkusen’s week to forget continued as they were held by Bochum. And in Ligue 1, it’s business as usual for PSG who continued their unbeaten start to the season in a 4-2 win over Angers. Not such smooth sailing for Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille, beaten 3-1 by newly promoted Auxerre at the Velodrome which prompted the former Brighton boss to say he’ll ‘leave the money and hand back my contract’. *** We’ve been nominated for Podcast of the Year at the 2024 Football Supporters’ Association Awards! Pol Ballús, Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford Bloor and James Horncastle are alongside Jimbo for your weekly dose of action from across the continent. We’ve reached the halfway stage of the Champions League league phase, with some tasty matchday four ties to preview including Inter v Arsenal, Liverpool v Leverkusen and PSG v Atléti. Domestically, it was a reduced schedule in Spain following the devastating flash floods in Valencia. We discuss the reaction to any football at all being played following the natural disaster - which included Barcelona's derby win over Espanyol. Napoli were stunned in their own backyard, handed a 3-0 defeat by Atalanta in Antonio Conte’s first defeat since his first game in charge. It means Inter are just a point off top spot in Serie A as they closed the gap thanks to a 1-0 victory over strugglers Venezia. In Ligue 1, PSG extended their lead to six points thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Lens to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign. After being unbeaten since April, it’s now back-to-back defeats for Monaco as Adi Hütter’s men slipped to third following their 1-0 defeat by Angers. And in the Bundesliga, Dortmund picked up a precious three points for beleaguered manager Nuri Şahin as they inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Leipzig. Jimbo’s joined by his continental crew - Pol Ballús, James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Seb Stafford-Bloor - to look back on a seismic week of European action - and all the fallout from Monday night’s Ballon d’Or ceremony which has left Real Madrid rather unhappy… We dive into the big news coming out of Old Trafford - that Manchester United are working on a deal to appoint Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. Portuguese journalist David Novo brings us the latest. There was pandemonium at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday night as La Liga leaders Barcelona thrashed their fierce rivals in El Clasico to move six points clear at the top of the table. It was also a week to forget for Atléti, beaten 1-0 at Betis which means they’re 10 points off the pace despite their record summer spending. There was also chaos in Serie A, with the Derby d'Italia finishing 4-4 between Juventus and Inter. Napoli took advantage to extend their lead at the top to 4 points after their narrow 1-0 win over Lecce. Bayern Munich responded to their midweek mauling by Barcelona by dishing out a 5-0 defeat to Bochum, while Dortmund were condemned to their third straight away Bundesliga defeat at the hands of Augsburg AND Leverkusen got Leverkusened - conceding a 90th minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen. And in Ligue 1, PSG are now the only unbeaten side in the division as they comfortably disposed of Marseille 3-0, while Monaco and Lens both tasted defeat for the first time this season. Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús and James Horncastle are back with Jimbo to reflect on another busy weekend of European action - and look ahead to matchday three in the Champions League. In La Liga, Barcelona put five past Sevilla while Real Madrid extended their unbeaten league run to 42 games ahead of a tantalising El Clásico coming up on Saturday night when Los Blancos could equal the record - set by Barca no less! But there’s a stern test for Hansi Flick to navigate in midweek first - with their nemesis and his former side Bayern Munich in town… Speaking of, Harry Kane was back to scoring ways (after a whole three games without a goal) as he bagged a hat-trick in Bayern’s 4-0 win over Stuttgart to warm up for the trip to Spain in style. There were also Bundesliga wins for Leverkusen and Dortmund - who continue to bewilder with their mixed form under Nuri Sahin as they prepare to face Real Madrid in a rematch of this summer’s Champions League final. It was a weekend of fine margins over in Italy, with Napoli, Inter, Milan and Juventus all winning 1-0. It’s Antonio Conte’s men who lead the way at the top of the Serie A table - while Roma’s frustrating start under Ivan Juric continues. And in France, PSG are beginning to purr with Bradley Barcola starring once again in their 4-2 win over Strasbourg - taking full advantage after early leaders Monaco were held to a goalless draw by Lille. Pol Ballús, Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford Bloor and James Horncastle are alongside Jimbo for your weekly dose of continental action. It’s matchday two in the Champions League and there are some particularly tasty ties to preview including 1982 European Cup final rematch Aston Villa v Bayern Munich and Arsenal v PSG. In terms of domestic fortunes, Barcelona’s perfect start is over! Hansi Flick’s tinkering doesn’t pay off as they’re beaten 4-2 at Osasuna - while the Madrid derby ended all square in dramatic circumstances. The spoils were also shared in the big Bundesliga tie of the weekend - with Bayern and Leverkusen playing out a 1-1 draw. Dortmund bounced back from their 5-1 defeat by Stuttgart - but they made hard work of it having to fight back from 2-0 down to winless Bochum. Napoli are the outright Serie A leaders after their 2-0 victory over Monza - and Inter got back to winning ways in a five-goal thriller at Udinese. While in Ligue 1, PSG have officially made their best start to a season in seven years after Friday’s 3-1 win over Rennes - while Marseille were handed their first defeat under Roberto De Zerbi by Liam Rosenior’s high-flying Strasbourg. Musa and Ryan begin with the Madrid derby (02.50), where Atleti salvaged a late draw against Real in a disrupted match at the Metropolitano. Meanwhile, Barcelona lost to a brilliant Osasuna side (17:39) and Mallorca climbed to fifth in La Liga. Honours were also even in the big match in the Bundesliga, despite Bayern’s dominance of Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena (24:48), where there were two brilliant goals. Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, St. Pauli secured a first win of the season, Dortmund came from behind to beat Bochum and Heidenheim continue to impress. Finally, they head to the Premier League, where Cole Palmer became the first player to score four goals in the first half of a match (36:45) and Spurs impressed at Old Trafford, winning 3-0 to heap more pressure on Erik ten Hag.
