Pol Ballús, Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford Bloor and James Horncastle are alongside Jimbo for your weekly dose of action from across the continent. We’ve reached the halfway stage of the Champions League league phase, with some tasty matchday four ties to preview including Inter v Arsenal, Liverpool v Leverkusen and PSG v Atléti. Domestically, it was a reduced schedule in Spain following the devastating flash floods in Valencia. We discuss the reaction to any football at all being played following the natural disaster - which included Barcelona's derby win over Espanyol. Napoli were stunned in their own backyard, handed a 3-0 defeat by Atalanta in Antonio Conte’s first defeat since his first game in charge. It means Inter are just a point off top spot in Serie A as they closed the gap thanks to a 1-0 victory over strugglers Venezia. In Ligue 1, PSG extended their lead to six points thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Lens to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign. After being unbeaten since April, it’s now back-to-back defeats for Monaco as Adi Hütter’s men slipped to third following their 1-0 defeat by Angers. And in the Bundesliga, Dortmund picked up a precious three points for beleaguered manager Nuri Şahin as they inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Leipzig. Bayern took full advantage, scoring goals for fun to move three points clear at the summit - while Leverkusen find themselves seven points off the pace after their goalless draw with Stuttgart. Plus, are Ajax finally back?! Michiel Jongsma joins us to reflect on Saturday’s 3-2 win over PSV - which moves Francesco Farioli’s side five points behind Eredivisie leaders Eindhoven with a game in hand. *** We’ve been nominated for Podcast of the Year at the 2024 Football Supporters’ Association Awards! There were two huge games between Spanish and German giants in the Champions League this week, so Musa and Ryan begin in Barcelona, where Hansi Flick performed a master class against his old side Bayern thanks to a Raphinha hat trick (02:19). The night before there was an equally enthralling game in Madrid, where Dortmund surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 5-2 to Real Madrid in the Bernabéu, where Vinícius Jr. took the plaudits and Nuri Sahin was left ruing a premature substitution (15:53). They then shout out some other results from match day three (27:19): Aston Villa is top of the Champions League, Liverpool is second only on goal difference, Lille completed a double over Madrid teams and the new format is maybe starting to heat up. Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús and James Horncastle are back with Jimbo to reflect on another busy weekend of European action - and look ahead to matchday three in the Champions League. In La Liga, Barcelona put five past Sevilla while Real Madrid extended their unbeaten league run to 42 games ahead of a tantalising El Clásico coming up on Saturday night when Los Blancos could equal the record - set by Barca no less! But there’s a stern test for Hansi Flick to navigate in midweek first - with their nemesis and his former side Bayern Munich in town… Speaking of, Harry Kane was back to scoring ways (after a whole three games without a goal) as he bagged a hat-trick in Bayern’s 4-0 win over Stuttgart to warm up for the trip to Spain in style. There were also Bundesliga wins for Leverkusen and Dortmund - who continue to bewilder with their mixed form under Nuri Sahin as they prepare to face Real Madrid in a rematch of this summer’s Champions League final. It was a weekend of fine margins over in Italy, with Napoli, Inter, Milan and Juventus all winning 1-0. It’s Antonio Conte’s men who lead the way at the top of the Serie A table - while Roma’s frustrating start under Ivan Juric continues. And in France, PSG are beginning to purr with Bradley Barcola starring once again in their 4-2 win over Strasbourg - taking full advantage after early leaders Monaco were held to a goalless draw by Lille. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend (0.45) • PART 2: La Liga review - Barcelona & Real Madrid win ahead of big UCL midweek (12.45) • PART 3: Bundesliga review - Bayern put 5 past Sevilla ahead of trip to Spain (25.30) • PART 4: Ligue 1 review - PSG take back top spot after Monaco draw (38.55) • PART 5: Serie A review - 1-0’s across the board for the big boys (49.40) Hosted on Acast. Meanwhile, Barcelona lost to a brilliant Osasuna side (17:39) and Mallorca climbed to fifth in La Liga. Honours were also even in the big match in the Bundesliga, despite Bayern’s dominance of Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena (24:48), where there were two brilliant goals. Paris Saint-Germain surprised many during the summer transfer window by not finding a direct replacement for Kylian Mbappé (25) after his free transfer to Real Madrid. However, with Bradley Barcola’s (22) impressive start to the season, PSG may have validated their decision to skip signing another left-winger. Barcola, a former Lyon player, joined the Ligue 1 champions in the summer of 2023. Fans of Lyon were puzzled by his choice, given the fierce competition in Luis Enrique's forward line. Mbappé was seen as nearly irreplaceable in Paris, and with Barcola's preference for playing on the left, it seemed likely he would see limited playing time. Initially, that concern proved accurate, as the Lyon academy graduate struggled to secure a spot in the starting lineup early on. However, he gradually established himself as a reliable option next to Mbappé before the conclusion of the previous season. Now, with the France captain having moved to Spain, Barcola has emerged as a key player for PSG this season. Could he be the solution to filling the void left by Mbappé? Having started as a striker at Lyon's youth academy, scoring has always been part of Barcola's game, a facet he aimed to enhance. While he showed effectiveness in attacking positions during his time at PSG and Lyon, he often played a creative role rather than a finishing one, netting 9 goals in 51 appearances during his first two Ligue 1 seasons. This season, however, Barcola seems to have elevated his goal-scoring prowess. As of now, he leads the league with 6 goals in his first 6 matches. Despite starting every game, he hasn't played the full 90 minutes each time, totaling 374 minutes of action. His strike rate translates to a goal every 62 minutes, placing him among the elite in Europe. Since emerging at Lyon, Barcola has not lacked confidence, but the added responsibility this season has appeared to unlock new potential. He has assumed a leadership role in the attack, embodying the concept of leading by example through his performances. With remarkable skill and impressive dribbling, Barcola creates spectacular moments on the field. Defensively, his tireless work ethic and effectiveness in regaining possession make him a coach's ideal player. Compiling all his attributes, the 21-year-old has become essential this season, making the departure of Mbappé much more manageable for PSG.

Chris and Jay are here for the News Update as according to reports in Spain, Martin Zubimendi has made a u-turn on his decision to stay at Real Sociedad. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Suj and James reflect on last night's European Championship Final that ended in a deserved triumph for Spain and defeat for England. The inquest now begins for England after the 'reality check' of being beaten by a team that was more incisive, kept the ball better and had more tactical flexibility. Should Gareth Southgate stand down as manager? Has he earned the right to make that decision himself? Plus, looking ahead, some big decisions need to be made about some of the personnel on the way towards 2026 in the search to become a better 'team'. The champions lifted the trophy behind goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal, and became the first team to win four Euro Championships. On the Copa América side, Lionel Messi and Ángel Di María were able to complete the story booking ending on an extra time Lautaro Martínez goal. Alexi Lalas and David Mosse broke down Canada’s heartbreaking loss as they fell to Uruguay in penalties. Looking for a signature win under Jesse Marsch, Ismaël Koné and Jonathan David had put Canada ahead 2-1 at the end of regulation. But a stoppage time equalizer by Luis Suárez and an Alphonso Davies missed PK, sent Uruguay home with the third place win. Both the Euro 2024 and the Copa América 2024 come to a close on Sunday when the finals kick off. Spain and England will face off first, followed by Argentina and Colombia, to see who will be lifting the trophies.
