Steve Crossman and the panel react to an action packed couple of nights in the Champions League. Julien Laurens, Mina Rzouki &, Guillem Ballagué give their reaction to a busy week for Italian clubs including Juventus’ near comeback, Atalanta’s late win over Borussia Dortmund and, Inter Milan’s shock defeat to Bodø/Glimt. In Spain, Real Madrid survived an early scare against Benfica to progress to the next round. Benfica had a plethora of chances. This doesn’t feel like a particularly strong Real Madrid side like the ones of old. Atletico Madrid are through to an eighth Champions League Round of 16 stage under Diego Simeone, but will it be his last? Had they gone out could it have been a different story for the Argentine. Jimbo has Duncan Alexander, Charlie Eccleshare and Liam Twomey in the studio with him in a week predictably packed with dramatic football. Atalanta stage an incredible comeback against Dortmund in the Champions League. They’re the only Italian team left in the competition after Juve’s incredible comeback falls short. Real Madrid and PSG also progress, with the holders still looking a shadow of last season. Can anyone stop the English clubs? Speaking of the Premier League, leaders Arsenal host a Chelsea side looking to make life difficult for them again. While Haaland heads home to Leeds as Man City try to keep pace in the title race. Elsewhere, it’s a huge game for Igor Tudor as Spurs travel to Fulham. And can West Ham finally win at Anfield? Plus Kyle Walker, apples and Osimhen to Juve? On Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Liverpool fan Dan Lord and West Ham fan Chris Stone to discuss the latest at their clubs ahead of Saturday's meeting at Anfield which could have big implications at both ends of the table. Liverpool are hoping to secure Champions League qualification for next season and consecutive 1-0 away wins has them in contention to do so, but could they be distracted by other Cup commitments? West Ham remain 18th, but have lost one in six and have Nottingham Forest and Tottenham in their sights, there's discussion on the battle to stay up and what The Hammers may need to escape - and there is reason from both perspectives to suggest in the immediate West Ham could cause a surprise on Saturday. Plus, all the key FPL assets covered, with Liverpool very much on mind with a great immediate run of fixtures. There's coverage on Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai, Florian Wirtz, Mo Salah and Hugo Ekitike. But FPL managers would be well advised to keep Hammers assets on mind, with Mads Hermansen, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Matheus Fernandes, Crysensio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen all giving reason to monitor. Suj and James fared very differently again in FPL in GW27 as clean sheets were bust, well owned players flopped but one hauler for James in Nico O'Reilly made the difference; but there is no doubt as James even concedes, that there was big slice of luck that he even still owned him. That was the highlight of a weekend for James, which ended with another North London Derby humbling as Tottenham continue to look nervously over their shoulder at West Ham and Nottingham Forest, who both failed to score but were unlucky to do so. There's a much promised look at Rayan and comparison to other midfielders in a similiar price bracket. Bournemouth along with Brentford, Fulham and Liverpool assets are likely to be popular this week, should Arsenal players be binned despite Sunday's comfortable win, Chelsea's brilliant fixture run is over and they slipped up against Burnley, should their assets including the in-form Joao Pedro be moved on too? All the games covered, the OOP not called O'Reilly catching the eye despite a blank and lots more... Jimbo has Daniel Storey, Tom Williams and Colin Millar for company after another weekend of pure Premier League drama. Arsenal get back to winning ways with Eberechi Eze returning to haunt Spurs again in the North London derby. Igor Tudor’s new side now sit 4 points above the relegation zone. Liverpool leave it very, very late to win at Forest and subject Vitor Pereira to defeat in his first league match in charge. Which means West Ham’s draw with Bournemouth closes the gap between 17th and 18th to just points. There are currently no points separating 4th, 5th and 6th after Chelsea drop points again at home to Burnley. Matt Woosnam joins us to outline Oliver Glasner’s future at Palace after the toxicity between the fans and the Eagles head coach increases. Plus some hot takes on James Milner becoming the Premier League’s all-time appearance record holder. Produced by Charlie Jones RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Goings on at Gateshead and Wellington (02.00) • PART 2: Spurs 1-4 Arsenal (08.00) • PART 3a: Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool (23.00) • PART 3b: Chelsea 1-1 Burnley (27.00) • PART 3c: Aston Villa 1-1 Leeds (31.00) • PART 4a: Oliver Glasner’s future at Palace with Matt Woosnam (37.00) • PART 4b: Sunderland 1-3 Fulham (43.00) • PART 4c: Man City 2-1 Newcastle (46.00) • PART 4d: West Ham 0-0 Bournemouth (51.00) • PART 4e: James Milner breaks PL appearance record (53.00) Hosted on Acast. James welcomes Aston Villa fan Lee Jackson and Leeds United fan Ed Salinger on to Clash of the Correspondents ahead of the meeting between the two clubs at Villa Park on Saturday. The title may look beyond Villa, but there's still plenty to play for as they try and hold on to a Champions League qualification spot and they will fancy their chances of going deep in the Europa League too. While for Leeds, despite sitting 15th and only 6 points above West Ham, the general consensus seems to be that they'll be fine after sustained period of positive results and performances. All the key FPL assets covered including defensive assets from both, Morgan Rogers, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. And there's plenty of reason to be interested in their assets, Villa have Wolves after Leeds and Leeds themselves have a great run beginning from GW29. Infact, from now until the end of the season, Villa and Leeds sit as the top two on James' fuxture difficulty ticker! Welcome to It Was What It Was, the football history podcast. In this first part of a two-part special on football hooliganism, co-hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper are joined by special guest Cass Pennant - former West Ham United Inter City Firm member who later became an author and film producer. They discuss director Ian Stuttard (known as “Butch”) and his 1985 groundbreaking documentary 'Hooligan', which challenged the stereotype of hooligans. Cass explains how Stuttard earned access by spending months with the ICF without a camera, building trust, and later filming from inside the action. The episode also covers the Thatcher-era context, the film’s controversial release and its wider impact on how 'firms' were understood. We finish the episode with Cass reflecting on Stuttard’s wider documentary career, their later partnership in a production company, and Stuttard’s lasting legacy. Join us next week for the history of football hooliganism. You can listen to this episode ad-free over on our Patreon - Follow the link here - or go to Patreon.com and search for It Was What It Was. Last week Tottenham finally parted ways with Thomas Frank with the club in 16th place and looking nervously over their shoulder at Nottingham Forest and West Ham. Former Juventus manager Igor Tudor has been given the managerial job until the end of the season. Here James is joined by fellow Tottenham fan Ricky Saunders for a discussion on the managerial change, why blame should also be aimed at those running the football club and concerns around a chronic injury list. Plus, what we can expect from Tudor tactically and stylistically and if the job is just waiting for Mauricio Pochettino's return... but would he even take it if the club went down? It's a midweek Totally Extra and Jimbo is joined by Jay Harris, Carl Anka, Liam Twomey & JJ Bull to discuss the midweek fixtures. David Ornstein broke the news this morning that Spurs have sacked Thomas Frank after 8 months in charge. Where did it go wrong for the Dane and who will replace him? Relegation-battling Leeds came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against their long time rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Man Utd were also held by relegation scrapping West Ham to deny Carrick's side 5 wins in a row, with Benjamin Sesko rescuing a point late on. Bournemouth made it 6 games unbeaten beating Everton 2-1 with their impressive new Brazilian winger Rayan scoring again. Suj and James review all the football and key FPL talking points from the Gameweek 25 weekend which concluded with dramatic scenes at Anfield as Manchester City kept their title challenge alive. That win featured a late Erling Haaland haul, surpassing Bruno Fernandes own double digit haul against Tottenham, but neither were anywhere near Cole Palmer's 20 pointer as he recorded a first half hat-trick at Wolves. There were also key wins in the battle to survive as Leeds beat Nottingham Forest and West Ham won at Burnley were Crysensio Summerville scored for the fourth game in a row. Now focus turns towards the Arsenal Double Gameweek. Should Gabriel be Triple Captained? What's the best Arsenal three? Should any Wolves be considered? And James has a defensive headache, and not just in FPL, because his captain Cristian Romero has given his team another one ahead of playing a Newcastle side that were beaten at home by high flying Brentford. Jimbo has Daniel Storey, Tim Spiers and Reuben Pinder for company after an action-packed Matchday 25 in the Premier League. Man City looked to be crashing out of the title race thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s outrageous free-kick. But late goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland keep the gap to leaders Arsenal at 6 points. What was going on with City’s disallowed 3rd goal? And what’s going on with Liverpool who stay 6th? Man United make it 4 wins out of 4 under Michael Carrick with a 2-0 win against Spurs, for whom Cristian Romero receives the 6th red card of his Tottenham career. It was a great weekend for West Ham at the bottom who beat Burnley while Nottingham Forest were taken apart at Leeds, halving the gap between Forest and the Hammers. Is it once again Arsenal's to lose? On the latest edition of Caught Offside, Andrew and JJ wonder if Manchester City and Aston Villa have swung the title race fully back in Arsenal's favor. Why does Pep have such a hard time with Spurs? Did Dominic Solanke just win a Puskas? And have Villa's xG overperformances finally caught up with them? Then, we dive into Manchester United's dramatic win against Fulham and Casemiro's importance to the team - does his upcoming exit make the mission clear for United in the summer transfer window? And how about Chelsea coming from 2 down to beat West Ham? While Rosenior gets the praise, JJ suggests that it was actually Nuno's errors that allowed it to happen. A very enjoyable weekend of football in the Premier League that included comebacks, momentum shifts and late drama and some FPL haulers too in the likes of (substitute) Joao Pedro and the Liverpool pair of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. Pedro and other Chelsea assets will take on greater appeal should they overturn their Carabao Cup deficit at Arsenal. The team that progresses now has a confirmed Double Gameweek in 26 and that may influence forthcoming moves with both have attractive fixtures this weekend too. But Chelsea were given a big scare against West Ham, The Blues completed one of a number of comebacks this weekend, as did Liverpool against Newcastle and Tottenham showed fight to come back from two down against Manchester City, who slipped further behind Arsenal. Whilst Manchester United let their own two goal advantage slip, but still won, with Bruno Fernandes again returning well for those who captained him, and he's likely to be even more popular this forthcoming weekend. All the games covered as usual and all the key FPL points deliberated.
