Barca, Bayern and Inter top the tree + Fiorentina finally win!

Jimbo’s got helpers James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor & Pol Ballús alongside him for some pre-Christmas cheer of a European variety. We begin in La Liga, where it’s as you were at the top of the table with Barca navigating the tricky trip to Villarreal to come away with all three points to keep their advantage at the top of the table. Real’s win over Sevilla helps ease the pressure on Xabi Alonso - but is Vini Jr’s future in more serious doubt? The shock scoreline across the continent was perhaps recorded in Florence, where having gone 210 days without a Serie A win - Fiorentina only went and put five past Udinese! Plus, Lois Openda ended his Juve goalscoring drought in their win over Roma to make things even tighter at the top. We touch base with events in France, Portugal, Turkey and the Netherlands - including the mounting troubles for Robin van Persie, Coupe de France storylines and lone Portuguese superfans! And in Germany - Bayern Munich continued their remarkable form with a 4-0 thrashing of Heidenheim - featuring Harry Kane’s 100th goal involvement in record quick time. Is the sky the limit for Vincent Kompany’s side this season? Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend (00.45) • PART 2: La Liga review - Mbappe equals CR7 as Barca pass Villarreal test (07.15) • PART 3: Serie A review - Fiorentina win a game… no, seriously! (18.40) • PART 4: Elsewhere in Europe - Coupe de France storylines & RvP under pressure (36.03) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - the Bayern machine rolls on (40.55) Hosted on Acast. Ousmane Dembélé quietly becomes the main man after long journey to the top

The Frenchman, who has been named the best male footballer in the world by the Guardian, has benefitted from PSG’s focus on the team rather than individuals What makes a good player great, and a great player the best? This question has been occupying me since 2014, when the Guardian first asked me to contribute to its inaugural Next Generation feature. My job was to look for a France-based talent born in 1997 who could go on to have a stellar career. After a great deal of research, I narrowed it down from my shortlist of five by asking questions not about the players’ football ability, but about other attributes: resilience, adaptability, decision-making, creativity, work ethic, response to feedback and willingness to learn. Qualities we cannot see, and are harder to measure.

2026 World Cup Draw Breakdown: Group of Death, USMNT Reaction + Who Is in Prime Position to Win It All?

Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros give their live reaction to the World Cup Draw. The boys break down the USMNT’s group, assess the tournament’s main contenders, and weigh in on who is primed for a deep run. They also reveal their dark horses and make their prediction for who will lift the 2026 World Cup.

More Real points dropped, Milan top + could PSG really be stopped?

Jimbo’s joined by the Euro crew as James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús and Julien Laurens assemble for our weekly slice of continental action. We begin in La Liga, where Real Madrid continue to falter - held to their third consecutive draw, this time at the hands of Girona. Barca managed to take advantage and reclaim top stop after their 3-1 win over Alaves - but there’s just a point between each of the top four as the title race hots up! In France, Paul Pogba’s Monaco toppled PSG! But Marseille also managed to drop points! So it’s Lens who go top of the table! For the first time since 2004! Over in Italy, Milan continued their remarkable record against Serie A’s big boys in their 1-0 win over Lazio. It means they’re top of the league - but only on goal difference after Napoli’s narrow 1-0 win at Roma on Sunday night. Plus, the sorry tale of Fiorentina’s winless campaign. And in the Bundesliga, Bayern need TWO stoppage time goals to get the better of lowly St Pauli, stretching their lead at the summit to eight points - while Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira bagged a 94th minute winner of his own to help Hamburg get the better of Stuttgart. Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend (00.40) • PART 2: La Liga review - Barca go top as Real’s wobble continues (13.35) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - Lens take advantage as PSG & Marseille falter (26.50) • PART 4: Serie A review - Milan go top as Napoli get back on track (36.00) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - Dortmund climbing and Sandro Wagner sacked (52.05) Hosted on Acast. Ireland’s epic comeback, Scotland’s Denmark decider + can Brazil win the World Cup?

Jimbo welcomes Natalie Gedra, Daniel Storey and Tom Williams into the pod after a phenomenal international weekend. The Republic of Ireland complete a remarkable comeback in Budapest to keep themselves in the World Cup and into the play-offs. Troy Parrott is the hat-trick hero. Gavin Cooney from The 42 was there. Similarly Scotland looked dead and buried after an hour in Greece on Saturday but they now have a huge clash with Denmark in Glasgow on Tuesday. Win the match and the Tartan Army will be heading to a first World Cup since 1998. England won plenty of matches - all of them in fact - on the way to qualification as they end the campaign with a 2-0 victory in Albania. And Norway make it 8 wins out of 8 as well with a stunning 4-1 victory at San Siro against Italy. Plus Natalię has been with the Brazil camp this week - can they actually go all the way and win a first World Cup since 2002? Bayern no longer perfect, Conte being Conte - and ten Hag back to Ajax?!

Jimbo’s got Pol Ballús, James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Seb Stafford-Bloor all along for the rollercoaster ride through the weekend’s action across the continent. We kick things off in France, where PSG have João Neves to thank for their two-point lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table after his 95th minute winner against Lyon. But chasers Lens and Marseille had wins of their own to keep the pressure on Luis Enrique’s side. In the Bundesliga - Bayern didn’t win a game! But neither did Leipzig or Dortmund, meaning Vincent Kompany’s men have actually extended their lead at the top of the table to six points despite the 2-2 draw at Union Berlin. In Spain, Real Madrid were lucky to come away from Rayo Vallecano with a point - which Barcelona took full advantage of in their 4-2 win at Celta Vigo, featuring a hat-trick from 37-year-old Robert Lewandowski. A special guest joins us from Vigo… nothing to do with Nando’s…. And in Serie A, are we seeing a repeat of Napoli’s last title defence?! Antonio Conte made some… interesting comments after his side were beaten 2-0 by Bologna to fall behind Inter and Roma at the top of the table. Plus - what’s going on at Ajax?! Dutch football expert Michiel Jongsma joins us to explain some of the fun and games in the Eredivisie - and whether a certain ten Hag might be making a return… Produced by Lucy Oliva. A Ballon d'Or for Dembele and goals galore for Kane

Jimbo’s got James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús and Julien Laurens for company as the Euro gang dive into another busy weekend of action from across the continent. In La Liga, Real Madrid continued their sensational run of form to begin the season with their latest victory, a 2-0 win over Espanyol featuring two absolute golazo’s from Éder Militão and Kylian Mbappé. They maintained their two-point lead over Barcelona - who beat Getafe 3-0 - with Marcus Rashford starting on the bench due to his poor timekeeping… Over in France, we were made to wait for Le Classique with dramatic storms sweeping over the Cote d'Azur… don’t worry, Jules will give his reaction to *that* result next week! Thankfully, we were able to talk about a fiery Brittany derby and Monaco’s resurgent Ansu Fati. In Serie A, Juve were perhaps suffering from a UCL hangover as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at Hellas Verona, while Lorenzo Pellegrini’s remarkable redemption arc at Roma continued as he scored the only goal in Roma’s first win ‘away’ to Lazio since 2016. And in the Bundesliga, you’ll never guess… Harry Kane is scoring goals! Three of them to be precise - taking his tally to 70 goals in 67 league matches. But he wasn’t the only British export bagging a dreierpack - with Oliver Burke getting three of his own in Union Berlin’s 4-3 victory at Frankfurt! Plus - we’ve got plenty of Ballon d’Or chat, loud helicopters and particularly cheeky Nandos… Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the week & Ballon d’Or chat (00.40) • PART 2: La Liga review - Real keep winning with Madrid derby round the corner (20.55) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - Emegha shows his commitment to Strasbourg (35.40) • PART 4: Serie A review - worrying times for Fiorentina, Lazio & Torino (44.35) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - goal machine Kane - and Burke! Peter Odemwingie | Nigerian Slap

In true deadline day fashion we went to record a podcast and happened to bump into the deadline day legend himself Peter Odemwingie in the car park so invited him inside to record a podcast. Totally Extra: Nicolas Anelka…misunderstood?

On this week's Totally Extra, Jimbo is joined by Julien Laurens, Duncan Alexander and Michael Cox to celebrate the career of the famous French prodigy/journeyman - Nicolas Anelka. His footballing CV is unique - from Clairefontaine academy and PSG to Mumbai City via 6 Premier League clubs, and spells in Spain,Turkey and Italy. Famed for his blistering pace and a penchant for rounding the keeper, but also for his regular fallings out with managers around the globe, resulting in his nickname 'Le Sulk'. He won leagues, cups and a Champions League with Real Madrid but many feel it could have been much more for the frontman that Henry said was better than he was. Produced by Jesse Howard and Charlie Jones. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Welcome to Totally Extra - Jules' love of cricket, Duncan’s quiz question and Coxy’s dining room table (00'40) • PART 2: This week in football - Ballon D’or winner Pavel Nedved is born and Ronaldo makes his debut at Inter (09'00) • PART 3: Opening the Totally almanac on Nicolas Anelka (16'10) • PART 4: Anelka's exile from France and the panel's favourite Anelka moments (46'05) Hosted on Acast. The German striker made his Premier League debut for Spurs on this week in 1994, and Jimbo gets the band back together - Raphael Honigstein, Juliens Laurens and James Horncastle - to remember the first Jurgen of English football. Famed for his blond locks and his spectacular goals but most memorably on these shores, for his diving for Germany and the subsequent celebration for Spurs. He won the World Cup and the Euros with Germany and had successful spells in Italy and France as well as in his motherland and the Premier League. Produced by Jesse Howard and Charlie Jones. Can Trent’s Real win back La Liga? And will Napoli retain their title?

Jimbo’s got the Euro gang back together as Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús, Seb Stafford-Bloor and James Horncastle return for a new season of hijinx and drama across the continent. We begin in France, where underdogs PSG got their title defence underway with a 1-0 win away at Nantes on Sunday night. But is there anyone who can close the 19-point gap? And are Marseille already in self-destruct mode? The Liga season is well and truly underway, with holders Barcelona getting their campaign off to a winning start against the nine men of Mallorca. Real don’t play until Tuesday night - but how equipped are Xavi Alonso’s new-look side to topple Barca? Over in Italy, we’re in store for yet another fascinating title race. The news that Romelu Lukaku is set to miss the first three months of the season with a muscle strain could open the door for a challenger to Napoli’s crown. So will it be a resurgent Milan or perhaps Gasperini’s Roma that put up the greatest fight? And in Germany, Harry Kane’s won another trophy! Bayern take home the Supercup. While there are still some areas of concern for Vincent Kompany’s side - have the teams around them done enough over the summer to produce a title race? Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Welcome back! Just not in French… And moments of the weekend (00.50) • PART 2: Ligue 1 review - PSG off to winning start - Marseille are not (08.55) • PART 3: La Liga review - Barca the favourites ahead of new-look Madrid? (21.00) • PART 4: Serie A review - Lukaku injury blow opens up the title race? (37.00) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - Who can challenge Bayern’s crown? (56.30) Hosted on Acast. Totally Gold Champions League 94/95: Van Gaal's Ajax go all the way

Back in the summer of 2020, Jimbo and co passed the time reviewing classic Premier League and Champions League campaigns. Here from the vault, we bring you the thoughts of James Horncastle, Raphael Honigstein and Julien Laurens on the 1994/95 Champions League season, when invincible Ajax shocked the world. In perhaps the peak of Louis van Gaal's long managerial career, this young crop of mostly homegrown talent went unbeaten in the Eredivisie and the Champions League to take home the top prize. Produced by Charlie Jones. Sliding Doors - France '98

England didn't have the best squad of the 1998 World Cup. Not even in the top four. And yet, it isn't always that simple. Martyn lays out his case to Rob that this was an underrated lost opportunity for England and it had nothing to do with the Argentina game. And we also missed out on one of the best World Cup semi-finals of all time. At what cost? Saudi Arabia and soccer

There's been two football tournaments in the United States this summer, the Club World Cup and the Gold Cup. Both with an ostensible Saudi feel, all part of grand plan to invest heavily in sport backed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Adam Leventhal has travelled to Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas to witness this soft power at play. Hear from Saudi players and fans who celebrate the exposure afforded by these tournaments, but also, crucially, those who fear its impact. All with an eye on the future when Saudi Arabia will be hosting the 2034 Men's World Cup. Host: Adam Leventhal Producer: Jesse Howard Exec Producer: Abi Paterson Featuring footage from: DAZN, Fox News, CBS News, France 24 News, FIFA Hosted on Acast. "The German monster has survived too long" opined Le Soir on 21 June 1984. And that was one of the more sober conclusions. It was also one of the two games that was shown live in the UK. Jonathan O'Brien joins Martyn to make sense of Group 2 with a surprise Iberian challenge and a disappointingly restrictive Romania. The Preview Show: Gothball

Vindication – at last – for Marcus Speller and the Nations League! Spain and France had a nine-goal punch-up last night and what can only be described as an incredibly post-season number of shots (40). Marcus, Jim, Andy and Vish discuss the game and turn their eyes to England's meeting with Andorra tomorrow, who – incidentally – are perhaps the only team in world football who might miss out on qualifying for next summer's 6-week long World Cup (more on that). We also hear about Gianni Infantino using himself as a number nine and narrow down the exact definition of Russell Martin's 'gothball'. Please fill out Stak's listener survey!
